Question 1

The weights, in kg, of students in a grade 6 class are displayed in the following stem and leaf
diagram:

a. From the diagram above, find the lower quartile, median and upper quartile. Showing
these values on the diagram and label them Q1, Q2 and Q3 . [6 marks]

b. Construct a vertical box and whiskers plot using the values obtained in part a) to help.
[10 marks]

c. Using the appropriate terms from box and whiskers plot, analysis the information given
in the box and whiskers. [4 marks]

d. Using the stem plot given create a frequency table using the grouping 20 – 29, 30 – 39,
40 – 49 and 50 – 59. [8 marks]

e. Use this table to find the variance and standard deviation. [20 marks]

a. Find the 31st term of an arithmetic progression whose 11th term is 38 and the 16th term is
73. [9 marks]

b. The first and last terms of an arithmetic are −24 and 72 respectively. The sum of all the
terms is 600. Calculate:
a. The number of terms in the progression
b. The common difference [8 marks]

a. Find the range of values of 𝑘 for which the equation 𝑥 2 + 3𝑘𝑥 + 2𝑘 = 𝑥 − 10 has

real and distinct roots. [10 marks]

b. State the values of 𝑘 for which the same equation above has equal roots.

c. The quadratic equation 4𝑥 2 + (4𝑎 − 3)𝑥 + 𝑎2 − 1 = 0 has no real roots, find the

possible value of 𝑎. [5 marks]

The roots of the quadratic equation 3𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 2 = 0 are 𝛼 and 𝛽. Form a quadratic equation
whose roots are:
