Section 2. The following passage contains ten mistakes. Find out the mistakes and correct them.
BEETHOVEN
1 Ludwig Van Beethoven, one of the most popular classical composer of all time, is
2 sometimes known as ‘the Shakespeare of music’. He was born in Bonne in 1770, and
3 publishing his first work at the age of thirteen. Mozart was his teacher for a short time,
4 although they did not get on well together; Beethoven was a difficulty student.
5 Like a composer, Beethoven was a genius – but as a person, he was not very easy to
6 like. He was a passionate man who lost his temper very easy. He was also arrogant. The
7 upper classes of Vienna used to invite him to parties, when he was often quite rude. He
8 was once heard to say to a prince: ‘There will always be many princes, but there is only
9 one Beethoven.’
10 Nevertheless, Beethoven played some of the most beautiful symphonies the world has
11 ever heard. How was so an arrogant, bad-tempered man inspired to write such romantic
12 music? Perhaps the answer lies in the three letters that was found after his death. They
13 were addressed to his ‘Immortal Beloved Woman’. Nobody knows that this woman was,
14 but it appears that Beethoven was deeply in love with her for most of his adult life.
Section 3. Supply the correct form of the words provided to the right of each blank.
Recently, researchers have been kept busy picking lettuces under cover of darkness, but
there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for this (1. APPEAR) __________ bizarre experiment.
Tests have shown that the vegetables picked at night stayed fresh (2. CONSIDER) __________
longer than those picked during the day, though the reason for this improved longevity is unclear.
Lunar gardeners claim to have known about the (3. BENEFIT) __________ effects of
nocturnal vegetable management for years, and those gardeners who believe in
(4.ENVIRONMENT) __________ friendly organic methods see the idea of working with the
moon’s influence as a continuation of their principles. They claim to be following a tradition, long-
established in (5. VARY) __________ parts of the world, of working in harmony with the moon’s
gravitational pull. In England, lunar gardening reached its zenith in the 16th century, but the
vagaries of the (6. PREDICT) __________ climate meant that it survived only as part of an oral
folklore tradition.
(7. CONFUSE) __________, several different and sometimes contradictory systems are
practised today. Although all of them focus on the effects of moonlight and the moon’s pull on the
Earth’s water, the exact science remains (8. CONTROVERSY) __________. There are some
horticulturists who regard the ideas with scepticism. Others, however, are more (9.
ENCOURAGE) __________ and less dismissive, and advocate further research, even though no

PART D. READING
Section 1. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks.

The popular image of student life is of young people with few responsibilities enjoying
themselves and (1) ________ very little work. This is often not true. Many older people now study
at college or university, sometimes (2) ________ a part-time basis while having a job and looking
after a family. These students are often (3) ________ motivated and work very hard.
Younger students are often thought to be lazy and careless about money but this (4)
________ is changing. In Britain reduced government support for higher education means that
students can no longer rely on having their expenses (5) ________ for them. Formerly, students
received a grant towards their living expenses. Now most can only get a loan (6) ________ has to
be paid back. Since 1999, they have paid over $1,000 towards tuition (7) ________ and this amount
will increase up to a maximum of $3,000. In the US students already (8) ________ pay for tuition
and room and board. Many get a financial aid package which may (9) ________ grants,
scholarships and loans. The fear of having large debts places (10) ________ pressure on students
and many take part-time jobs during the term and work full-time in the vacations.
Section 2. Read the following passage and think of a word which best fits each space. Use only
ONE word for each space.
HOME-ALONE FATHERS

brought up his two teenage sons (3) ______ he and his wife split up two years ago. “It’s far (4)
______ difficult for a man than it is for a woman,” says Steve. “It’s a full-time job, whoever you
are. Fortunately, my employers were very sympathetic in the (5) ______ new months and they let
me take time off work to get myself organized.
As far as the housework is concerned, I don’t mind cooking, as I’ve always been (6)_____ at

Section 3. Read the following passage and choose the best option marked A, B, C or D to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Animation traditionally is done by hand-drawing or painting successive frames of an object,
each slightly different than the preceding frame. In computer animation, although the computer
may be the one to draw the different frames, in most cases the artist will draw the beginning and
ending frames and the computer will produce the drawings between the first and the last drawing.
This is generally referred to as computer-assisted animation, because the computer is more of a
helper than an originator.
In full computer animation, complex mathematical formulas are used to produce the final
sequence of pictures. These formulas operate on extensive databases of numbers that define the
objects in the pictures as they exist in mathematical space. The database consists of endpoints, and
color and intensity information. Highly trained professionals are needed to produce such effects
4
because animation that obtains high degrees of realism involves computer techniques for three-
dimensional transformation, shading, and curvatures.
High-tech computer animation for film involves very expensive computer systems along
with special color terminals or frame buffers. The frame buffer is nothing more than a giant image
memory for viewing a single frame. It temporarily holds the image for display on the screen.
A camera can be used to film directly from the computer’s display screen, but for the
highest quality images possible, expensive film recorders are used. The computer computes the
positions and colors for the figures in the picture, and sends this information to the recorder,
which captures it on film. Sometimes, however, the images are stored on a large magnetic disk
before being sent to the recorder. Once this process is completed, it is repeated for the next frame.
When the entire sequence has been recorded on the film, the film must be developed before the
animation can be viewed. If the entire sequence does not seem right, the motions must be corrected,
recomputed, redisplayed, and rerecorded. This approach can be very expensive and time
consuming. Often, computer-animation companies first do motion tests with simple computer-
generated line drawings before selling their computers to the task of calculating the high-
resolution, realistic-looking images.
