LESSON 1 PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE

Activate

Activity 1.1: DO YOU TRULY KNOW YOURSELF?

Answer the following questions about yourself as fully and precisely as you can.
1. How would you characterize yourself?
I characterize myself as a happy go lucky person because I am always smiling despite the
hardship and circumstances I am facing. I am also a thoughtful person because I always
think of the goodness of others before myself.

2. What makes you stand out from the rest? What makes yourself special?

I think what made me stand out from other people is that I am perseverant and a
determined person. I am doing all my best to help my parents and to finish my
studies even if we are far from one another.

3. How has yourself transformed itself?

When I was a child I had only view a small scope of what life should be. It is only a
quarter of what I had learned in the present. As I grew up, I started to see the world in
a larger scope and made me realize that everything I have seen is only a point
from a big spectrum. And there I started to transform myself from an ignorant child
into an open minded person.

4. What will happen to yourself after you die?

When I die I think my body will be decayed and will turned into dust. While my soul
Will continue to guide my loved ones who are alive, until I am able to live again.

Direction: Answer the following

A. Think of a current issue or pattern that a sociologist might study. What
types of questions would the sociologist ask, and what research
methods might he employ? Now consider the questions and methods
a psychologist might use to study the same issue. Comment on their
different approaches.
B. Explain why it’s important to conduct research using both male and
female participants. What sociological topics might show gender
differences? Provide some examples to illustrate your ideas.
A.
The issue or pattern that a sociologist might study can be drug addiction. The type of

question might be what are the different assumptions about drug addiction and how it affects
people. This can use descriptive method of research to obtain the result of the proposed
study. If Charles Cooley used his Interactionist Perspective of Sociology approach then it
can observe and study the behavior of this people. In George Meads through his theory that
involves social interactions he can observe the nature of this person and internalize their
opinions of why they engaged themselves in such activities. In particular, through Cooley’s
theory he can tell how these drugs affects the people’s behavior which is the very main point
of this study. On the other hand, Mead can provide us the reason on why a person engage
themselves in drug addiction, and also it shows how these kind of addiction affects his
behavior and his relationship with others.

B.
It is important to conduct research using both male and female to avoid gender biased.
Integrating of gender balance can provide much more accurate scientific research. It is
because women brings a unique perspective than men. As illustrated in a study
conducted by Dr. Vera Regitz Zagroseka Director of Institute of Gender in Medicine and
Deputy Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research at Charite Berlin, he explained
that Heart Disease can affect both men and women, but it comes differently. Women have
a different symptoms than men and women respond differently through medication. Thus,
we should always know both sides , it would not only to avoid gender biased but it can
increase the quality of the research and improves the acceptance of innovation in the
market.

Assessment Tasks

Direction: Write an essay about what it means to be Filipino

What does it means to be a Filipino? Is it being born and raised in the Philippines? Is it having both Filipino
parents? Is it sharing the same color of our skin? Is it living in the same archipelago? Or is it caring about
everything that makes us a Filipino?

Is it being born and raised here in the Philippines? Some Filipinos are raised in the Philippines but raised to
speak mostly in English and taught different values. Is it having both Filipino parents? Filipinos are products of
genetic admixture. We are, in a genetic sense, a truly global people. Is it sharing the same color of our skin?
Filipino doesn’t have the same color shade. Is it because we live in the same archipelago? A large number of
Filipinos are scattered around the world. Or is it caring about everything that makes us a Filipino?

So what does it means to be a Filipino? Being a Filipino is caring about our countrymen and caring about our
culture that makes us Filipino. As a Filipino people, we are considered as one of the sole nations in the world. We
have our own distinct manners and norms that define us from other countries and people. We Filipino are unique
and colorful. We have our unique culture with colorful traditions. We Filipinos are hardworking. For instance, we
are known for our industriousness and upward mobility, especially when we emigrate. We Filipino has a strong
and close family ties.

We place high regard and put importance of our family first and foremost before anything else. It is
because we believe that families should be together and help each other out. We are always together with
our family and friends. Basically, anyone we consider a loved one, is a part of our family. Even if we are not
blood related. We will never leave their side. No matter how hard the journey is, how long it is or how
rough, we will always be there for someone. At every struggle, we always see a ray of hope shining
through. We rarely give up, but when we do, we give up with a smile on our faces

Being Filipino means being a part of a wonderful culture. A culture filled with amazing foods, beautiful
languages and having a great homeland to go to. When I tell you the food is amazing, it is so good. Seriously, once
you taste it, you will fall in love with it. Being Filipino means being hospitable. Yeah, we are really giving our best
to accommodate our visitors, and make them feel good and at ease. We converse and build genuine relationships

with them. Aside from being hospitable, we Filipinos are known for having an ability to be happy and stay positive
no matter what circumstances we faced. Whether we are weathering strong typhoons or simply surviving the
horrible Metro traffic – Filipinos still find a reason to smile.

We also have a these colonial mentality and manana habit that are known as the negative values of being a
Filipino. We Filipinos do not mind if we pushed other people down, for us to become on the cream of the crop.
We looked down upon our own culture and looked up on foreign culture which we find much more beautiful than
ours. In manana habit, We Filipinos follows the notion of not finishing our works on time. However it is not true
that we Filipinos are lazy and does not have a sense of urgency. It is only a stereotype.

In general Filipinos have both a positive and negative attributes that defines us of what we are and makes us
unique from other countries and people. Therefore, for me being a Filipino is accepting and loving our own unique
ways that makes us a Filipino.
