NOTES

System 5 machines are equipped for the use of a "thumb." The machines provide two-way/one-
pump flow, utilizing the standard attachment spool. The System 5 is very limited in the number
of changes that can be made to the operation of the tool. The C-Series "thumb" system is very
similar to the dealer installed B-Series "thumb" systems. This is the only configuration that
bears any resemblance to the B-Series auxiliary hydraulics.

No initial calibrations of the tool system are necessary if the machine was ordered from the
factory with a tool control system. For System 3 and System 14 machines the required work
tool flow must be programmed using ET or the monitor ("TOOL No.X - 101," "TOOL No.X -
102," "TOOL No.X - 103.")

It is recommended that the two-pump flow parameter ("Tool No.X - 005") always be
programmed to "Enable." Damage to the work tool may result if this is not configured properly.

When selecting a work tool, if "BKT / NO TOOL" is selected, then the high pressure auxiliary
work tool lines will send full pump flow to an attached tool. This could cause serious damage to
the work tool.

SYSTEM 3

The System 3 Tool Control is intended for use in one way/two pump flow applications, such as a
hammer or a tamper. This schematic shows the electrical and the hydraulic components that are
associated specifically with the System 3 machines.

The work tool is actuated by the foot switch located on the cab floor. This switch is loose in the
cab so it can be moved to suit the operator. When depressed by the operator, the foot switch
sends a fixed current to the one way flow activation solenoid. The solenoid allows pilot oil to
flow from the pilot manifold through the solenoid to the work tool pressure switch, and to the
two attachment hydraulic valve stems.

Attachment Stem 2 is a stacked valve on the left side of the main control valve. Attachment
Stem 1 is the standard attachment spool. Stems are fully shifted by the pilot oil, allowing the
two pump combined flow to flow to the work tool. The Work Tool Line Relief Valve is used to
limit the pressure of the oil flowing to the work tool. Return oil is allowed to flow directly to the
hydraulic oil cooler.
SERV7102-03 -7- NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

When closed, the work tool pressure switch signals the engine/pump control that the work tool
is active. The engine/pump control then turns the swing brake OFF, turns AEC and One-Touch
Low Idle to the NORMAL running mode, and sends a signal to the Negative Flow Control
(NFC) PRV. The NFC PRV receives a signal from the engine/pump control that is based upon
the "Tool No.X - 101," "Tool No.X - 102," and "Tool No.X - 103" settings. This signal is
directly proportional to the desired work tool flow programmed in these parameters. The NFC
PRV then sends a false NFC signal to the implement pumps. The overall effect, is that the main
pumps are only partially destroked by the false NFC signal to the desired work tool flow
programmed.
SERV7102-03 -8- NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

The medium "C" series hydraulic excavators use an electric pedal switch (arrow) in order to
activate the solenoid that controls pilot oil flow to the main control valve for the work tool. This
switch can be moved around inside the cab.

Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

1 2

The one way flow activation solenoid (1) that controls the pilot oil for the work tool control
valves is located behind the cab, to the left of the main control valve. This is an "ON/OFF" type
solenoid that allows full pilot oil signal flow to Attachment Stems 1 and 2 when activated. The
work tool pressure switch (2) that signals the engine and pump control when the work tool is
active is located in the pilot line going to the main control valve.
SERV7102-03 - 10 - NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

2 1

When the Work Tool Activation Solenoid is activated, Attachment Stems 1 (1) and 2 (2) receive
a common pilot signal. The two valves shift down fully, and allow oil to flow from both of the
main implement pumps out to the work tool. System 3 always sends two pump flow to the work
tool.
SERV7102-03 - 11 - NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

This is Attachment Stem 2 (2), which is bolted onto the left side of the main control valve. This
valve allows pump flow from the left pump to flow to the work tool.

Attachment Stem 1 (not shown) is the standard attachment valve, and allows pump flow from
the right pump to flow to the work tool. The two valves work in parallel.

A line relief valve (1) is included standard with the Attachment Stem 2. This line relief is
designed for one pump flow and works best in the 3600 kPa (5200 psi) range This line relief
valve should not be used on System 3 machines. The work tool line relief valve (discussed later)
should always be used.

At the boom foot are two junction blocks for the work tool supply (1) and return (2) lines. The
supply line is on the left side.
SERV7102-03 - 13 - NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

The junction block on the left side contains the work tool line relief valve (arrow). The work
tool line relief valve should be set approximately 3447 to 5171 kPa (500 - 750 psi) above the
work tool operating pressure. The work tool line relief valve is designed for two pump flow and
lower operating pressures.
SERV7102-03 - 14 - NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

The NFC PRV (arrow) is located in the pump compartment, toward the rear of the machine. The
NFC PRV is controlled by the engine and pump controller and limits main pump output flow
during work tool operation. The flow output is programmed using Caterpillar Electronic
Technician (ET) or the monitoring system "Tool Parameters - 101, 102, 103."

SYSTEM 5

The medium "C" Series excavators use the Standard Attachment Stem 1 as the control valve for
the System 5 Work Tool. This is a two way/one pump configuration most commonly used for
"thumb" operations. A pilot valve is the activation device for the work tool. It is controlled with
a foot pedal and is on the left side of the travel pedals. There is no programming required for
most applications of the System 5.

SYSTEM 14

This schematic is intended to layout the basic components in the System 14 Tool Control.
Specific functions and operation are discussed later. The System 14 Tool Control is designed to
allow fully electronic control over the tool control system. Any combination of one or
two-pump flow and one or two-way flow can be achieved with this system. In addition the
System 14 machines have a dedicated auxiliary pump and medium pressure circuit. The System
14 can be used with most any work tool such as a shear, a hammer, a tamper, thumb, grapple,
multi-processor, etc.
The operator controls the operation of the System 14 Work Tools with the buttons and slide
switches on the implement joysticks. Electrical signals are sent from the attachment controller
to the pilot PRV solenoids located in the pump compartment. The PRV solenoids control pilot
oil flow to the attachment valve stems.
Attachment Stems 2 and 3 are bolt on valves on the left side of the main control valve. Stem 3
controls the flow of the medium pressure circuit, and has it’s own main relief for the attachment
gear pump. The main and line reliefs for the medium pressure circuit are manually adjusted.
Stem 2 controls the flow of the oil to the work tool from the left (front) main pump. Stem 1 is
the Standard Attachment valve and controls the flow from the right (rear) main pump.
SERV7102-03 - 17 - NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

The flow from the attachment stems 1 and 2 is regulated by the NFC PRV Solenoid, similar to
the way the System 3 Tool Control operates. The flow from stems 1 and 2 combine, and can
flow in two directions. The working pressure of the tool is limited by the electronic relief
valves. The relief valves are active when the respective electronic check valves (EC1, EC2) are
open. During two-way flow electronic check 3 (EC3) is closed. During one-way flow, EC3 is
active. This allows return oil from the work tool to flow directly to the hydraulic oil cooler,
reducing back pressure in the system.

System 14 has five preprogrammed tools stored in the ECM from the factory. Tool 1 is a
hammer one pump configuration. Tool 2 is a shear one pump configuration. Tool 3 is a hammer
two pump configuration. Tool 4 is a shear two pump configuration. Tool 5 is a thumb one
pump configuration. The medium pressure circuit is only available when Tool 2 or Tool 4 is
active. The various tools can be activated and programmed through the monitor or ET.

12

This photo shows the swing/stick joystick for the System 14 tool configuration. The
boom/bucket is similar.

The slide control on the swing/stick joystick controls the two-way flow of the medium pressure
spool, when Tool 2 or 4 is selected. The slide control sends a proportional signal to the
attachment controller when the slider is shifted from the center detent position. The button on
the lower left of the joystick controls the horn. All other buttons on the joystick are not used in
this configuration.

The slide control on the boom/bucket joystick controls the two-way flow of valves when Tool 2,
4, or 5 is selected. The slide control sends a proportional signal to the attachment controller
when the slider is shifted from the detented center position. The button on the lower right of the
joystick controls the one-touch low idle function. The button on the upper right of the joystick
controls the one-way flow of valves when auxiliary tool one or three is selected. All other
buttons on the joystick are not used in this configuration.

The slide control on the swing/stick joystick is only active when Tool 2 or 4 is selected. This
controls the medium pressure circuit. When Tool 2 or 4 is selected the slide control on the
boom/bucket joystick controls the two-way high pressure output. When Tool 2 or 4 is selected
the top right button on the boom/bucket joystick is not active.
SERV7102-03 - 19 - NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

When Tool 5 is selected ONLY the slide control on the boom/bucket joystick is active. Medium
pressure is not available.

NOTE: Tool 1 and 3 are programmed to operate a one-way flow work tool. The upper
right button on the boom/bucket joystick is used to control this. When Tool 1 or 3 is
selected the two slide controls are not operable. This means that a two-way flow or a
medium pressure (rotate function) work tool cannot be operated by selecting Tool 1 or 3 in
the monitoring system.

The main hydraulic pumps (2) supply oil for all high pressure/flow work tool functions. The
attachment pump (3) for the medium pressure/flow circuit is located below the right main pump.

The location on medium pressure pump will vary depending on machine size. The medium
pressure pump may also be located on the drive pump or the idler pump.

The NFC PRV (1) is located in the lower left side of the pump compartment. The pilot PRV
solenoid manifold is located in the lower right side of the pump compartment.

14

This photo shows the manifold (arrow) that houses the PRV solenoids that control the flow of
pilot oil to the attachment hydraulic stems. The PRVs are controlled by the attachment
controller based upon operator joystick inputs, and programmed parameters. This manifold is
located in the lower right (front) of the pump compartment. There are six PRV solenoids in the
manifold, with pressure taps for easy service.

The pressure tap furthest to the right with the pressure test hose attached, is the "1A" PRV. This
solenoid controls the pilot signal to the standard attachment valve stem for the extend function.
This solenoid works in conjunction with the "clench" pressure sensor in order to control the
pressure in the head end of the work tool cylinder during two-way operation. This function can
be programmed to suit specific applications. Next to the "1A" PRV is the "1B" PRV. This
solenoid controls the pilot signal to the standard attachment valve for the retract function. The
two middle PRV's are "2A" and "2B". These control the extend and retract of attachment valve
2. "3A" and "3B" control the extend and retract of the medium pressure valve.

The "A" side of the PRVs flows to the top of the main control valve. The "B" side of the PRVs
flows to the bottom of the main control valve.

15

This photo shows the main control valve of a machine equipped with a System 14 tool
configuration. Notice the valve furthest to the right side of the picture. This valve is the
medium pressure circuit control valve (1). The main relief (2) for the medium pressure circuit is
located on the top of the valve body. The next valve towards the center of the main control
valve is the Attachment Stem 2. This valve works in conjunction (when enabled) with the
standard Attachment Stem 1 in order to supply two pump flow to the work tool.

NOTE: The main control valves on the 318C-330C are similar in appearance, function,
and operation.

Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

16

Electronic check valve one (EC1) (1) and electronic relief valve one (ERV1) (2) are located at
the foot of the boom next to the cab. EC1 is the component shown in blue on this machine.
When activated, this check valve allows oil to flow to ERV1. ERV1 is mounted vertically on the
rear of EC1. ERV1 relieves the working pressure in the supply line for the high pressure supply
to the work tool.

ERV1 one can be programmed in the monitor (Tool No.X-009) or in ET to relieve pressure from
0 - 40,000 kPa (0 - 5800psi). This function can be used to set a lower working pressure for a
work tool, for example many hammers run at 20,700 kPa (3000 psi).
SERV7102-03 - 24 - NPI
Vol. 3, No. 1, 2002

1
2

17

Electronic check valves two (EC2) (1) and three (EC3) (2), and electronic relief valve two
(ERV2) (3) are located at the foot of the boom next to the fuel tank.

EC2 is located toward the front of the assembly. When activated, this check valve allows oil to
flow to ERV2. ERV2 is mounted vertically on the rear of EC2. ERV2 relieves the working
pressure in the supply line (two-way flow only) for the high pressure supply to the work tool.
ERV2 can be programmed in the monitor ("Tool No.X-010") or in ET to relieve pressure from
0 - 40,000 kPa (0 - 5800psi). This function can be used to set a lower working pressure for a
work tool.

EC3 is activated during one-way flow operations only and allows oil returning from the work
tool to pass directly to the hydraulic oil cooler in order to reduce the back pressure in the
auxiliary hydraulic system.

This shows the operation of the System 14 Tool Control as a one-way/one-pump system. This is
the default configuration of Tool No. 1 on System 14 equipped machines.

In this configuration, EC1, ERV1, and EC3 are active. The attachment controller receives a
signal from the joystick. The attachment controller sends a signal to the "1A" PRV. The "1A"
PRV sends pilot oil to the top of the Standard Attachment Valve (SAV) 1. SAV1 shifts fully
allowing full one pump flow to the work tool. Oil flows through EC1 and into ERV1. ERV1
will maintain the system pressure set in parameter 009. Oil returning from the work tool will
flow through EC3 and into the hydraulic oil cooler, then return to tank.

This shows the operation of the System 14 Tool Control as a one way/two pump system. This is
the default configuration of Tool No. 3 on System 14 equipped machines.

In this configuration, EC1, ERV1, and EC3 are active. The attachment controller receives a
signal from the joystick. The attachment controller sends a signal to the "1A" and "1B" PRV.
The "1A" and "1B" PRV send pilot oil to the top of the Standard Attachment Valve (SAV) 1 and
Attachment Stem 2 (AS2). SAV1 and AS2 shift fully allowing full two pump flow to the work
tool. Oil flows through EC1 and into ERV1. ERV1 will maintain the system pressure set in
parameter 009. Oil returning from the work tool will flow through EC3 and into the hydraulic
oil cooler, then return to tank.

This shows the operation of the System 14 Tool Control as a two-way/two-pump system. This is
the default configuration of Tool No. 4 on System 14 equipped machines. Cylinder extend is
shown, but cylinder retract operates much the same way.

In this configuration, EC1 and ERV1 are active. The attachment controller receives a PWM
signal from the joystick. The attachment controller sends a signal to the "1A" and "2A" PRVs.
The "1A" and "2A" PRVs send pilot oil to the top of the Standard Attachment Valve (SAV) 1
and Attachment Stem 2 (AS2). SAV1 and AS2 shift down based on the PWM signal. Two
pump flow is now sent to the work tool. Oil flows through EC1 and into ERV1. ERV1 will
maintain the system pressure set in parameter 009. Oil returning from the work tool flows back
through the main control valve and returns to tank.

NOTE: Auxiliary Tool No. 5 also is defaulted to operate as a two-way/two-pump system,

however the medium pressure circuit is not active.

This shows the operation of the System 14 Tool Control as medium pressure system. The
medium pressure circuit is only active when Tools No. 2 and No. 4 are active. The medium
pressure circuit is typically used for a rotate circuit.

In this configuration, the attachment controller receives a PWM signal from the joystick. The
attachment controller sends a signal to the "3B" PRV. The "3B" PRV sends pilot oil to the
bottom of Attachment Stem 3 (AS3). AS3 shifts up based on the PWM signal. Pump flow is
now sent to the work tool. The medium pressure main relief valve maintains the system
pressure. Oil returning from the work tool flows back through the main control valve and
returns to tank.
