Sewage and Its Harmful Effects

https://www.netsolwater.com/
The effect of sewage on the environment is mainly negative. It requires proper
treatment prior to its disposal and is usually disposed in the oceans.

If sewage is not fully treated prior to its disposal in oceans mainly, it can
contaminate water and harm large amounts of wildlife.

Secondly, flooding may cause fully untreated sewage to enter into rivers and other
waterbodies, causing them to get polluted. The consequences lead to contamination
of water bodies, causing disease spreading, like diarrhea, hepatitis etc.

Studies have found that microscopic plastic fibers gets released when certain
clothes are washed, can make their way into wastewater treatment plants and then
into marine ecology systems. They can harm many living creatures and also destroy
the food chain.

Effects of Water Pollution on Human Health-:
Water, which is a part of everything that you do, when polluted has a negative
impact on human health. Water pollution not only increases your chances of falling
ill but also affects your hair and skin. Here are some of the effects of water
pollution-:

1. Waterborne Diseases
Approximately two-thirds of Indian homes don’t get safe and clean drinking water,
which increases the risk of waterborne diseases. Diarrhea is one of the most
dangerous diseases caused by water pollution, which is also one of the largest
killers in India.

2. Makes water Hard

An excessive amount of pollution increases the TDS level in the water, making it
hard. As water is a good solvent, it easily picks up impurities, which increases
the TDS level. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) comprises inorganic salts such as
calcium, magnesium, potassium, and small amounts of organic matter, which dissolve
in water making it hard.

Plants such as algae often experience a population increase called an algal bloom,
which limit the sunlight available and cause lack of oxygen in water. When oxygen
levels decline, marine animals, coral reefs, seagrass beds and other vital habitats
in the water bodies may suffer and die.

Pollution by sewage causes-:

1)Fish mortality.
2)Eutrophication.
3)Threats to corals, swamp ecosystems and seagrass beds.
4)Biological diversity loss.
5)Red tides which have killed marine organisms.
6)Threats to tourism.

Soil Degradation
Wastewater is often reused for irrigation. Chemicals that are harmful to crops, may
find their way to the soil when the sewage is not properly treated. These chemicals
will cause the soil to yield fewer crops at a slower rate.

Other Harmful Characteristics of Sewage

Untreated sewage is often hot, further disrupting the ecosystem of fish. Fish are
cold-blooded, so they rely on the water to regulate their own body temperature.
Additionally, the temperature of the water also affects the amount of oxygen
dissolved in the water bodies as increase in temperature decreases solubility of
gases in water.
