Foreword by the Director

More than any other institution, the

Whitney Museum of American Art is as-
sociated with living American artists.
This has been true since the Museum
was founded in 1930 by Gertrude Van-
derbilt Whitney, whose activities in sup-
port of American artists had begun as
early as 1907, when she organized an
exhibition of contemporary American
painting.
The Biennial Exhibition is the highlight
of our ongoing effort to perceive the evo-
lution of the visual arts. It encourages an
intense response from the public and the
art community, and the resulting dia-
logue stimulates critical thought and the
evaluation of current accomplishments
in American art.The Biennial also signals
the important commitment of the Whit-
ney Museum to the art of our times. This
commitment has been renewed continu-
ously since ourfirst Biennial in 1932 —
sustained achievement that historically
distinguishes the Whitney's exhibitions
from those of other institutions.
The impact of contemporary European
art, especially from Italy and Germany,
is stronger and more immediate today

than at any time since 1945. 1° recent

years, European artists have made van-
guard contributions to the visual arts.
Because more of their work is visible in
New York than in any other American
city, the current Biennial takes on added
significance, for it permits American art
to be viewed in a broader context. With-
in a climate in which many countries are
claiming dominance of the international
art scene, the Biennial underscores the
continuing innovations of postwar Ameri-
can artists, who have left behind their
predecessors' dependence on other cul-
tures.
The decisions made by the curatorial
staff in selecting works for the exhibition
represent specific points of view at a par-
ticular moment in time. Living in a soci-
ety where individuals are increasingly
reluctant to announce their convictions,
I am proud that our staff made their

professional judgments in a public state-

ment intensified by the excitement of
controversy.

Tom Armstrong
Preface by the Curators

Since its founding over fifty years ago, concerned with and informed by issues
the Whitney Museum of American Art pertaining to all aspects of contemporary-
has surveyed recent developments in thought, and to the wide-ranging endeav-
American art in its Annual and Biennial ors in the literary, visual, and perform-
Exhibitions. These exhibitions are now ing arts. The achievements of film and
most enduring, broadly
established as the video artists are marked by an investiga-
based assessments of contemporary tion of the image-making properties and
American art. No other American exhi- narrative forms of the projected and sin-
bition series has evaluated this art with gle-channel image. Super-8 films are rep-
equal breadth and commitment. Though resented for the first time, in recognition
the character of American art has radi- of the contribution being made to film aes-
cally altered since the first such survey thetics by artists working in this format.
in 1932, the objective of these exhibi-
tions has remained constant: a selection,
John G. Hanhardt
Barbara Haskell
by curators of the Whitney Museum, of
Richard Marshall
some of the most vitalwork made with-
Patterson Sims
in the previous two years by living
American artists. Artists are chosen for
their accomplishments and challenging
assertions of new ideas.
As the quantity and variety of Ameri-
can art have grown, the task of selection
has become more complex — especially
so in 1983, since the present Biennial is

smaller in si/e, due to the long-term in-

stallation ot 'zoth-Century American Art:
Highlights of the Permanent Collection"
on the Museum's third floor. In accord-
ance with the practices established in the
1977 Biennial \ xhibition, artists are usu-
allyrepresented by more than one work.
As has almost always been tin- case, the
function of the Biennial is not so much
to introduce unknown talents as to iden-
ignificam achievements by both
lesser-known and more established art-
ists, rhe Biennial purposefully mixes
artists ot all ages and stages ot develop-
ment to provide framework tor better
