Vocational scenario

Organisation
Tesco PLC is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer
headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, England. It was opened in 1919 by Jack
Cohen as a group of market stalls in Hackney, London. It has shops in Ireland,
the UK, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. It is the market leader in
groceries in the UK (where it has a market share of around 28.4%). is classed as
one of the 'big four' supermarkets along with Asda, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons
In the 2021-2022 financial year, Tesco’s annual revenue amounted to more than
£56 billion in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. This was an increase of over
three billion pounds compared to the prior fiscal year. The company’s profit in the
UK and the ROI increased and came to 2,191 million in 2021/2022.

Embedded in teams across the company, strategy professionals explore complex
business issues; conduct consumer, competitive, and market analyses; create
financial models and develop action plans. The Strategic Planning teams help
write the future of the food retail industry by charting the company’s path forward.
Role
You are employed as a Junior Insights Strategist for the Strategic Planning team.
The team acts as a key partner to senior leaders, the executive team, and the
CEO. It provides thought leadership and an external perspective on the most
critical strategic initiatives and pressing challenges facing the company.
Your key roles include the following:
• supporting data and business analyses to develop business plans;
• measuring business performance to compare actual data to forecasted
values;
• executing market research projects and gathering intelligence on current
industry, technology, and consumer trends.
Assignment activity and guidance
You have been tasked with conducting an industry analysis that focuses on the
food retail industry to gain access to industry perspectives, best practices from
other high-performance companies, and insight into high-growth sectors.
You will present your analysis to your line manager and to the management team.
The industry analysis will involve the research and analysis of overall market size
(local, national, and international) and Public, Private and Non-Profit sub-
sectors and the organisational mapping of ONE of the highest-performing
companies.
Organisations to be considered should be public, private, and non-profit
companies such as supermarkets, convenience stores, food manufacturers, and
others.

You will present this industry analysis as a portfolio of ‘insights’ factsheets,


to include:
1. an introduction to sub-sectors and the different types of organisations in the
industry, the market size, and the growth of the international business
environment;
 Explain different types and purposes of organisations in the industry such
as public, private and voluntary sectors and legal structures (P1).
 Describe the size and scope of a range of different types of organisations
and growth of the international business environment (P.2).
2. A FACTSHEET FOR A SELECTED SUB-SECTOR ORGANISATION SUCH
AS:
 convenience stores, department stores, supermarkets & hypermarkets,
multichannel stores, with explanation of each of the chosen organisations,
including background details of the organisation;
 the products and services they supply;

 the size and scope of the organisation;
 their vision, mission and business objectives;
 the organisational and legal structure and information about their
stakeholders.

 Create a factsheet for a chosen sub-sector organisation by defining each of


the selected organisations by including background information of the
company, goods and services that they offer (P1 & P.2).
 Define their mission, vision and business objectives (P.1).
 Identify the organisational and legal structure (P.1).
 Explore and explain the role of stakeholders for the chosen company (P.1).
 Explain the size and scope of the organisation that you have chosen (P.2).
 Analyse how the structure, size and scope of different organisations link to
the business objectives and product and services offered by the
organisation (P.2 & M.1).

3. AN ANALYSIS FOR ONE OF THE CHOSEN ORGANISATIONS, USING


VISUAL MAPPING.
For business modelling purposes, you will also need to examine the various
business functions in one organisation and create an organisational chart to
explore the interrelationships between the different functions.
In addition to the ‘insights’ factsheets, you will present an organisational
flow chart that shows:
How internal departments, for example, sales, finance, marketing, work together to
meet business objectives and how interrelationships are defined by the structure of
the organisation; present the advantages and disadvantages?
 Create organisational visual mapping (organisational flow chart) of chosen
highest-performing food retailer company (P.3).
 Explain the relationship between different organisational functions and
demonstrate how they link to organisational objectives and structure (P.3).
 Analyse the interrelationships between organisational functions and the
impact that can have upon organisational structure (M.2).
 Critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the chosen
organisational structure (M.2).

4. CONCLUSIONS BASED ON CRITICAL IMPACT ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT


BUSINESS STRUCTURES AND THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN
INTERNAL DEPARTMENTS IN SUCCESSFULLY FULFILLING OVERALL
BUSINESS OBJECTIVES. 
 Produce a critical analysis of the complexities of different organisations and
structures (D.1).
