1os(s) December 2018 ENGINEERING MECHANICS Time Allowed: 3 Hours Full Marks: 70 Answer to Question No.1 is compulsory and to be answered first. This answer is to be made in separate loose script(s) provided for the purpose. Maximum time allowed is 45 minutes, after which the loose answer scripts will be collected and fresh answer scripts for answering the remaining part of the question will be provided. ‘On early submission of answer scripts of Question No.1, ‘a student will get the remaining script earlier. Answer any five questions from Group-A, B & C, taking at least one from each group. 1A. Fillin the blanks (any ten): p10 i) _If.a number of forces are acting simultaneously on a particle, then the resultant of these forces will have the same effect as produced by the all the forces. This is known as ii) Ifthe tw6 forces P and Q are acting at an angle 0 and their resultant acting at an angle a with P, Then tana iii) The effect of a couple acting om a rigid body is o__it without moving it as a whole. iv) Ifa body is in equilibrium, We may conclude thatthe resultant of all the forces acting on it is____and the moment of the forees about any point is v) The Lamis Theorem is applicable only for three coplanar and __forees. vi) The centre of gravity of a right circular cone of diameter (d) and height (h) lies at a distance of _____ from the base measured along the vertical radius vii) C.G. isthe point through which the whole __of a body may be assumed to act. Vili) The efficiency ofa screw jack may be increased by __its pitch. ix) ‘The kinetic friction is slightly __than the limiting friction. x) Assimple machine has only ___point forthe application of effort and load. xi) Instead of simple wheel and axle, differential wheel and axle gives __V.R. xii) The amount of effort required to overcome the machine friction is given by B, State whether the following statements are True or Fase (any ten} 1x10 i) Theefficiency of a screw jack is maximum when the helix angle is equa to (45° — 12). ii) The force of friction between two bodies in contact is always normal to the surface of their contact. iii) Centroid of a triangle lies at 2b/3 from the base, where h is the height of a triangle. iv) A body is said to be in equilibrium, if it has no linear motion ¥) A couple can be balanced by a force equal to its magnitude. vi) Angle of repose is equal to angle of friction, A body isolated from all other supports which are in contact to it, is called a Free body. ‘Turing the cap of a pen is not an example of a couple. ix) Incase of lifting machine load vs. Effort graph is a curve. x) Ifthe law of lifting machine is P= 0.04W + 20, the maximum mechanical advantage is 25 xi) Mechanical advantage is the ability of a machine to multiply force. xii) The velocity ratio of a single purchase crab which can be inereased by increasing the ‘number of teeth on the pinion, Group-4 a) Two concurrent forces M & N are acting at an angle a, derive the expression of their resultant force. b) The resultant of two forces M & N is R. If'N is doubled, R is doubled and if M is reversed, R is again doubled. Show that M: N: 3: V2, 37 a) State and prove Varignon's theorem. b) Replace the 10kN force by two downward force acting at C and D respectively, which will not disturb the overall external effect on the beam. 5+5 10kN ai A B m 4) Define the properties of a couple. b) Find the magnitude of resultant force and also the angle through which the resultant acts for the following system of forces 46 [AS unpale J ir KN ) Describe briefly the types of loading and types of support of the beam. b) simply supported beam AB of 6m span i subjected to loading as shown in Fig. Find the support reaction atA and B. 16 2kN 3m SKN, sm A B 10. Group: 4) Write short notes on:~ Laws of state friction, b) A metal block of weight 200 N is resting on a horizontal surface. The co-efficient of friction between the surfaces being 0.3.A pull is exerted on the block by means of a string inclined at 30° to the horizontal which is sufficient to cause motion of the block. Calculate the magnitude of force cexerted by the string. 46 a) What is Centroid and Centre of Gravity? b) Find the Centroid for the following figure having dimensions as shown, 3H ian Find the centre of Gravity of a ‘T” section with equal width throughout having dimensions as shown in fig. All dimensions are in mm. 50. 2 4 3 10 b) a) ») ‘What is the law of a machine. From equation of law of machine find the maximum Mechanical advantage and maximum efficiency of a simple lifting machine. In a differential whee! and axle the larger axle is 200 mm in diameter and the smaller one is 150 ‘mm in diameter. The effort handle is 400mm long. Find the Velocity Ratio. [fan effort of 150 N lifts a load of 1500 N, find the efficiency. 545 ‘Deduce the expression for the condition of self-locking ofa lifting machine. Ina Weston’s differential pulley block, the difference in the number of teeth of the two pulleys is 4. If the efficiency of the machine is $0% and an effort of 100 N just lifts a load of 2 KN, find the number of teeth of the two pulleys. 46
