ASSIGNMENT NO 3
STRAIN TENSOR
1. The displacement field for a body is given by
𝑢 = [(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 2)𝒊 + (3𝑥 + 4𝑦 2 )𝒋 + (2𝑥 3 + 4𝑧)𝒌]10−4
What is the deformed position of a point originally at (1, 2,3)?
2. Consider the displacement field
𝑢 = [𝑦 2 𝒊 + 3𝑦𝑧𝒋 + (4 + 6𝑥 2 )𝒌]10−2
What are the rectangular strain components at the point 𝑃(1, 0,2)? Use only linear terms.
3. A rectangular airplane wing spar (Figure P3.3) is loaded so that a state of plane strain (𝜀𝑧 = 𝜀𝑧𝑥 = 𝜀𝑧𝑦 =
0) exists.
(a) Determine the displacements for the spar for the deformations shown and the strain components at
point B.
(b) Let the 𝑋 axis extend from point 0 through point 𝐵. Determine 𝜀𝑋 at point 𝐵.
4. A machine part in the form of a parallelepiped (Figure P3.4) is deformed into the shape indicated by the
added straight lines. The displacements are given by the following relations: 𝑢 = 𝐶1 𝑥𝑦𝑧, 𝑣 = 𝐶2 𝑥𝑦𝑧 and
𝑤 = 𝐶3 𝑥𝑦𝑧.
(a) Determine the state of strain at point 𝐸 when the coordinates of point 𝐸 ∗ for the deformed body are
(1.504, 1.002, 1.996).
(b) Determine the normal strain at 𝐸 in the direction of line 𝐸𝐴.
(c) Determine the shear strain at 𝐸 for the undeformed orthogonal lines 𝐸𝐴 and 𝐸𝐹.

(a) [ ] (b) [ ]
𝑐𝑥𝑦 𝑦2 𝑐𝑥𝑦𝑧 𝑦2𝑧
where 𝑐 is a small constant.
6. The strain distribution in a member have the form

𝜀𝑦 = 𝑏0 + 𝑏1 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 4
𝛾𝑥𝑦 = 𝑐0 + 𝑐1 𝑥𝑦(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑐2 )
What relationships connecting the constants (𝑎′s, 𝑏′s, and 𝑐′s) make the foregoing expressions possible?
7. State the conditions under which the following is a possible system of strains:
𝜀𝑥 = 𝑎 + 𝑏(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 )𝑥 4 + 𝑦 4 𝜀𝑧 = 0
𝜀𝑦 = 𝛼 + 𝛽(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 )𝑥 4 + 𝑦 4 𝛾𝑦𝑧 = 0

0 −0.02 0
In the direction 𝑃𝑄 having direction cosines 𝑙 = 0.6, 𝑚 = 0 and 𝑛 = 0.8, determine 𝜀𝑃𝑄 . What is the
cubical dilatation at point 𝑃?
9. The displacement field in micro units for a body is given by
𝑢 = (𝑥 2 + 𝑦)𝒊 + (3 + 𝑧)𝒋 + (𝑥 2 + 2𝑦)𝒌
Determine the principal strains at (3, 1, −2) and the direction of the minimum principal strain.
