10BASE-T1L is designed to replace the 4mA to 20mA

applications. However, this does not mean that older field devices have a limited data bandwidth of just a few kbps.

via software configurable I/O (SWIO) modules, while remote parameterisation information.
I/Os serve as a collection point for connection to the PLC
with a 10Mbps Ethernet uplink.

Software configurable I/O modules have reconfigurable

module channels which allows them to work quickly, easily,
and remotely without requiring extensive rewiring. The
channels can be configured either as input or output both for
currents and voltages, or digital and analogue.

In some cases, there is a requirement that both power for the

devices and their data be provided via 10BASE-T1L, which is
defined as part of the standard. Figure 1 shows an example
of a mix of conventional field instruments connected via a
4mA to 20mA current loop and new 10BASE-T1L-capable
field instruments.

10BASE-T1L supports two amplitude modes: 2.4V for cable

lengths of up to 1000m and 1V for shorter distances up to
200m. Through the 1.0V peak-to-peak amplitude mode,
this technology can also be used in explosion-protected
environments (hazardous areas) and meets the strict maximum
energy consumption requirements applicable there.

An industry consortium has specified the advanced physical

layer (APL), which builds on the 10BASE-T1L standard,
defining intrinsically safe operation for process automation. Figure 1. Sample architecture with both conventional and 10BASE-T1L-capable

Enabling machine learning

As robotic technologies advance, so do complementary

sensor technologies. Much like the five senses of a human
being, combining different sensing technologies offers the
best results when deploying robotic systems into changing
and uncontrolled environments. Even the simplest tasks that
a robot performs will depend on machine vision to feed
data into machine learning technology. Grasping an object,
for example, without pre-determined locations and motions
would be impossible without leveraging machine vision
to reconstruct a 3D image and utilizing machine learning
algorithms to translate this visual information into a successful
action on the part of the robot.

Conclusion

There are a variety of system considerations a robotics

designer has to make when designing a robot. Determining Listen to the podcast, read articles and more at:

Microcontrollers - spanning a huge capability from 4-bit to 64-bit and beyond - are to be found everywhere.
Therefore, we thought it was high time that Mouser's Electronics Information Update presented a series of
articles looking at the MCU in detail, considering architectures, operation, selection, OS and tools. In this
latest chapter, Adam Taylor, Founder and Principal Consultant at Adiuvo Engineering and visiting professor
of embedded systems at the University of Lincoln, considers MCU operating systems.

16bit ADC and eval module NEW PRODUCT

at mouser.com
now available
Texas Instruments AMC1333M10EVM Modulator
Evaluation Module (EVM) is designed to help
evaluate the AMC1333 easily.

The AMC1333 is a 1-bit modulator with an output buffer

separated from the input interface circuitry by a silicon
dioxide (SiO2)isolation barrier. The isolation barrier provides
galvanic isolation of up to 8000 VPEAK.

When combined with a digital filter, the Texas Instruments

AMC1333 can achieve 16-bit, analog-to-digital (A/D)
conversion with no missing codes. For high-resolution
measurement applications, an effective accuracy of 14 bits
can be obtained with a digital filter bandwidth of 20kHz at
a modulator rate of 10MHz.

GaN eval board in stock NEW PRODUCT

at mouser.com
Mouser is now stocking the GS-EVB-HB-0650603B-HD
half-bridge bipolar driver switch evaluation board
from GaN Systems.

This compact gallium nitride (GaN) enhancement-mode

(e-mode) half-bridge evaluation board packs some notable
features while reducing the overall number of components
and saving valuable board space.

The board features two HEY1011-L12C GaN FET drivers

and two 650V, 60A GaN e-mode transistors arranged in a
half-bridge configuration. The HEY1011 is an isolated gate
driver optimized for driving GaN FETs with fast propagation
delay and high peak source/sink capability for use in
high-frequency applications that require isolation, level-
shifting or ground separation for noise immunity. Since
the HEY1011 driver does not need secondary side power
or bootstrap components, it frees up valuable board space
and makes for a more cost-effective design.

To help alleviate the effects of gate-drain capacitor GaN Systems’ GS-EVB-HB-0650603B-HD half-bridge bipolar
