SYSTEMS INTERACTIONS

Learning Objectives
1. Describe how the skeletal and muscular systems work together.
2. Describe which body systems work together to obtain and transport materials.
3. Describe which body systems control communication and regulation.

Movement in the Human Body

 The skeletal and muscular systems bring about movement in the human body

Skeletal System
 Includes all the bones in the body

Muscular system
 Made up of all the muscles in the body
Note: Muscles and bones work together to make the body move.
The nervous system tells the muscles when to act

Muscles and Bones

 The muscles that are attached to the bones of the skeleton are called skeletal
muscles.
 They provide the force that moves the bones.
 Muscles can contract and relax.
 When a muscle contracts, it pulls on the bones to which it is attached.

Bones and Joints

 A joint is a place where two or more bones meet.
 Movement occurs at joints by the action of muscles on bones.
 The nervous system controls when and how the muscle act on bones.
Systems that Move materials within the body
 The respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and excretory systems play key roles in
moving materials within the body.

The Circulatory System

 Made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
 Brings essential materials (e.g. oxygen) to all cells of the body and carries away
cell wastes (e.g. carbon dioxide)

The Respiratory System

 Made up of the lungs
 Moves oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out of the body.
 Air that is inhaled goes into the lungs, where oxygen in the air moves into the
bloodstream.

The digestive system

 Made up of mouth, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, and large
intestine.
 Breaks down foods into nutrients, which then move into the bloodstream through
absorption.

The Excretory system

 Made up of the Kidneys and Urinary bladder.
 The kidneys filter wastes to produce urine, which then carries the wastes out of
the body.

Systems that control body functions

 The nervous system and the endocrine system work together to control body
functions.

The Nervous System

 Made up of the Brain, Spinal Cord, and nerves.
 Information gathered by the senses in the form of a stimulus travels through
nerves to the brain or spinal cord and produces a response.
The Endocrine System
 Made up of endocrine glands, which produce hormones.
 Hormones are chemicals released directly into the bloodstream and transported
throughout the body.
 Hormones affect many body processes.
