Day 6
Sample:
Nowadays a large amount of advertising is aimed at children. Some people think this can
have negative effects on children and should be banned.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
To boost the sales of products, many advertising companies view children as their target
audiences in present-day society. There is a growing concern about whether or not such kind of
advertising should be banned. From my perspective, they tend to have some adverse effects on
the younger generation and it is sensible to use censorship to protect children from unreliable
information and even ban fraudulent advertisements.
It cannot be denied that some creative advertisements are conducive to mental development.
One of the most main benefits is that they can serve as a source of entertainment and
inspiration, which means that young children can enjoy advertisements similarly to how they
would enjoy a TV programme. This is owing to the fact that some entertaining advertising
usually includes humour, music and action, inspiring a child’s imagination and creativity.
Another advantage is that exposure to some creative advertisements can cultivate youngster’s
imagination and enable them to learn how to express their feelings creatively.
To sum up, while advertising can influence the next generation positively in some cases, I hold a
firm belief that the negative impacts are more apparent and we are supposed to ensure that
the advertising providing unreliable information should be banned.
Many people are moving from rural areas to big cities. Why has this happened? To what
extent do you think it is a good trend?
These days many people from rural areas have chosen to migrate to cities, believing that they
are more likely to find employment and enjoy a better quality of life in urban areas, but the
movement of population can cause many problems.
There are two main reasons why these people have made this decision. Firstly, cities are more
densely populated and there are more job opportunities available, so they may earn more
money. This means that they can improve living standards and afford more consumer goods
than ever before. By contrast, employment opportunities are scarce in rural areas, due to the
fact that many industries are underdeveloped and many inhabitants’ buying power is limited.
Another advantage of urban life is that city dwellers have easy access to public services,
including education and health care, and young couples who used to live in the countryside
intend to send children to urban schools to get prepared for better job opportunities.
The increased number of urban dwellers can put huge pressure on housing and facilities in
cities. Some cities are unable to accommodate a large population because of the shortage of
land. Many migrants end up living in slums and enduring poor living conditions, because they
cannot afford home ownership. All city dwellers are prone to poor health because urban
facilities do not have the capacity to manage waste and sewage effectively and to match the
growing demand for clean water.
Another problem associated with a rural-to-urban shift is that rural-urban income disparity will
grow, instead of diminishing. Young people who are ambitious, energetic, hardworking and
creative prefer to go to the cities in search of educational and employment opportunities. The
shortage of labor has thus become a problem in rural communities and it is not easy to
revitalize the local economy.
In conclusion, poor employment prospects and sluggish local economies have caused the
population shift to cities. This is a worrying trend.
(There is a trend that…With the development of…)
Many people are moving from rural areas to big cities.
The movement of people from the countryside to the city has been a clear trend in many parts
of the world.
如 rural areas 可替换成 rural communities, the countryside, farming areas, big cities 可替换成 l
arge cities, megacities, metropolitan areas 等,move 可替换成 relocate to, migrate to, the rura
l-to-urban shift 等
Many rural residents have migrated to metropolitan areas.
Big cities have attracted many people who used to lived in rural areas.
Many people from rural areas, who previously worked in farms, have chosen to move to big
cities, especially those which provide numerous manufacturing jobs.
Many people are moving from rural areas to big cities, possibly because they have lost their
traditional livelihood in their hometown.
方法 1:如果表示原因的话,可以用 because of, due to, as a result of…
Because of the lack of well-paid jobs in rural communities, many people have chosen to migrate
to cities.
As many cities have become prosperous, a growing number of people from rural communities
have chosen to move to urban areas for a better standard of living.
The economic growth of many cities has driven people from rural communities to move to
urban areas in search of jobs.
The society is based on rules and laws. The society would not function well if individuals were
free to do whatever they want. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Laws refer to the rules imposed on human beings. Although laws play an important role in
regulating our behavior, I believe that strict laws can also restrict our freedom.
If no law regulated people’s behavior, a country would be in chaos and the economy would
collapse. For example, if people do not obey traffic regulations, traffic accidents will increase
and traffic congestions will become a problem. The revenue of numerous businesses will be
affected because their products cannot be delivered efficiently. Similarly, in a country where
there are no laws to punish those merchants who sell fake products online, consumers will stop
shopping on the Internet and this country will suffer economically.
Following moral principles is also important; otherwise, people will not be able to develop a
respectful and trusting relationship. They are sometimes motivated by self-interest to do
something that would be harmful to others, such as betraying the trust of their business
partners, but this would cause damage to their relationship. If people do not fullfil their
promises, they will find it difficult to conduct business together, and arguments will reduce
productivity. It is fair to say that no society could function well when people lack mutual trust.
On the other hand, laws sometimes inevitably restrain human’s freedom and even hinder social
progress. For instance, if one country has many restrictions on the business world, the business
activity will not thrive. High income earners who are subject to high income tax rates may lack
motivation to make greater efforts to increase their income. The government can relax
regulations to unlock potential of these people, which can contribute to social progress.
From what has been discussed, it is reasonable to argue that a country cannot operate well
without laws and rules. Alternatively, our society cannot advance easily, if laws are too
restrictive.
People can also enjoy their lives in a peaceful, closely-knit society, where they follow social
rules and behave in a socially responsible way.
Nevertheless, laws and rules can sometimes limit freedom and stifle creativity, which can
prevent us from building a prosperous society.
People who are conscious of business etiquette may keep their voice down when talking on the
phone in the workplace, so their colleagues can concentrate on their work and the company
can operate effectively. This also applies to the whole society.
In contrast, in a lawless society, people do not have a sense of security when they do business,
drive to work and buy products, which can have a negative impact on the economy.
The society cannot advance easily, if laws are too restrictive.
Some people believe that they should be able to keep all the money they earn and should not
pay any tax to the state. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many people regard tax as a burden, because it can reduce their disposable income. I think that
we need to pay tax, because without tax revenue, the society cannot function appropriately.
If the government has tax revenue, more funds can be used to build public facilities such as
roads, schools and hospitals. Without a great public transport system, commuters find it
difficult to travel to and from work, and traffic congestion could reduce work efficiency. Public
schools can provide children with educational opportunities, and without a well-educated
workforce, a country cannot sustain economic growth. Private investors are normally not
interested in transport links and schools, which do not generate considerable profits.
Levying taxes can also regulate people’s behavior and encourage them, especially those who
sometimes fail to show self-restraint, to break bad habits. For example, the heavy tax on
cigarette and alcohol discourages the public from spending on these items. The resulting
lifestyle changes can improve their health and reduce hospital visits, thereby easing the
pressure on the medical system.
On the other hand, if taxpayers are subject to high taxes, they may not have the incentive to
work hard and entrepreneurs are also not willing to set up a business. Money is a great
motivator for most people because with high income, they can improve living standards and
gain a sense of accomplishment. Without the hard work of these people and their willingness to
show their talents, a country would not become prosperous and the welfare system could not
be sustained.
Overall, I am convinced that taxes are the lifeblood of the economy although high taxes can
have an adverse effect on economic growth.
