The United States is a large country and has a variety of climates. Because of this, many different fruits and
vegetables can be grown in the country. For example, the state of Idaho is known for its potatoes, Georgia for
its peaches, and South Carolina for its peanuts. California produces a third of all the vegetables in the United
States, and two-thirds of the fruits and nuts we eat are also grown there. But did you know that one of our
favorite fruits is imported?
Very few bananas are produced in the United States. In fact, only the states of Hawaii and Florida really grow any
bananas at all. Almost all the bananas that people eat in the United States are imported from other countries,
especially Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Colombia, and Honduras. Guatemala exports between 85 and 90
percent of all its bananas to the United States.
After bananas are picked, they are washed and packaged for export. Every box of bananas gets a special
number. This number contains information about the farm where the bananas were produced and picked.
In the United States, each person eats, on average, 28 pounds of bananas every year — that’s about 84
bananas per person. The banana is the cheapest fruit you can buy. Although there are about a thousand
different types of bananas around the world, Americans generally eat just one type. The typical yellow banana
people buy is called a “Cavendish banana.” The reason so many Cavendish bananas are produced is that they
are easy to grow, store, and transport.
It might seem strange, but Cavendish bananas originally come from a plant grown by a gardener in the United
Kingdom in 1830. The gardener named the fruit Musa Cavendishii because his employer’s family name was
Cavendish.
