Installed on mast ofthe ships. I releases carbon dioxide (CO2) in bulk quantity toa protected space
(such as engine room, carge hold, purer room, pump room, et.) under fre. Smothering action of COZ
‘extinguishes the fre thereby preventing spreading offre to other parts ofthe ship. It consist of soveral

Why C02 is used?
Carbon oxi i the fre exinguising medium used in C02 floading system. tis an effective fre
suppression agent applicable to wide range of fire hazards. Ithas a high rate of expansion which
allows ito work fast. When applied to fre, CO2 provides a heavy blanket of gas that reduces the
‘oxygen level toa palnt where combustion cannot occur. Since carbon dioxide Isa gas, there Is no
clean up associated with a system discharge. CO2, a compound of carbon and oxygen, is a colorless
85 which cause coughing to occur when inhaled. At higher concentrations itis acutely toxic. Low and
high pressure C02 is used forthe fre protection of machinery spaces, pump rooms, cargo holds, paint
stores and galley exhaust venation ducts on board ship.

Similan there are some disadvantages also, uch as
+ CO2is highly asshyxiating. 9% concentration causes unconsciousness within minutes
+ Very litle cooling effec. Sa there is danger of reigniton.
+ When discharged, solid CO? particles present and gonerate sufficient static electrity to produce

after the operation of both valves in the release cabinet.

The time delay can be achieved In diferent ways. Out of these, two types of ime delay units
commonly used in C02 flooding system on board ships. One is electrical ype, which has an AC 220 V
Power supply, a pressure switch, ter and a solenoid valve as shown in the figure below.

Power source is alvays avalable forthe unt Solenoid vale is normally In closed postion. When CO2
from plat cylinder (CO2 release cabinet) reaches the time delay uni, the pressure acis on the pressure
switch. This closes the pressure suite But the timer allows power supply ta the solenoid only after 60-
{90 seconds, the timing can be adjusted as required. As soon as the speced time is reached, solenoid
becomes energize and the solenoid valve wil open. This alow passage of C02 to the pressure
‘operated cylinder valve of main bottle. Normally a by pass valve Isao fited across this ime delay unit
wich can be used incase the unit goes defective
‘Another type oftime delay unt uses an emp bot ited just before the head assembly. This empty
bottle fils fst before supplying pressurised CO2 tothe head assembly. This is moce reliable since
there sno electrical components involved. Figure below 000000shows two tme delay units, one for
tengine room and the other for pur room,
