C. Course description
As the title goes, the course provides an overview of the main features of translation and
interpretation. The course starts with the translation section and ends with the interpreting one.
Concerning translation, the course provides participants with general stages a translator has to go
through if s/he wants to be successful at producing the last translated version. Besides the general
methods of translation , s/he has to be aware of the process of translating and problems related to
equivalence (i.e. at word level and above word level). Last but not least, categories of translation will
also be introduced so that participants may have an idea of the differences between general
translation and specialized translation (e.g. literary translation, commercial translation, legal
translation, etc.). With reference to interpretation, participants will be introduced to consecutive
interpreting without note-taking and then with note-taking. Simultaneous interpreting will also be
introduced so that participants can get a feel for what it is.

1 Provide participants with a critical understanding of the strategies of processing a text or
speeches before translating or interpreting;
2 Develop participants’ ability to examine and draw conclusions on the differences between
cultures of the source and target languages;
3 Encourage participants to reflect on cultural and social issues based on the key concepts in
translation and interpreting.
4 Introduce some fundamental techniques of memorization to be applied in consecutive
interpreting without and without note-taking;

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1 Understand and recognize strategies of analyzing the source language PLO_14B (R)
text to the pre-stage of translating via the think-aloud process;
2 Have ability to recognize strategies of dealing with problems of both the PLO_15B (R)
scope of lexis and grammar to translate a text;
3 Apply the procedures to translate or interpret appropriately a source PLO_15B (R)
language text into a target language one;
4 Apply the communicative method to appropriately interpreting a source PLO_16B (R)
language text to a target language one;
5 Apply memorization techniques to consecutive interpreting with and PLO_16B (R)
without note-taking in the context of business meetings.

F. Instructional modes
A wide range of instructional modes are designed to promote declarative and procedural knowledge,
participant engagement, and collaboration in a supportive learning environment. Activities which
involve teacher-centered transmission models (e.g. lectures) and student-centered constructivist
models (e.g. discussions and task-based activities) will provide a variety of input-output procedures
to reach the target of quality learning.
Generally, each meeting might be conducted in the following way:
- Lectures (20% of the time): Participants will be introduced to new concepts.
- Discussions or tasks (65% of the time): Participants will participate in discussion activities or
tasks designed to activate the concepts presented in lectures or reading materials.
- Commentary (15% of the time): Lecturers will give comments on the opinions/problems
presented in group/class discussion or problems found in the tasks.
- During the course, participants are taken to join meetings with interpreters organised by Hoa
Sen University or other organizations, at least once if there is.
Besieds, the following matters should be paid attention to:
1. Group work is applied.
2. Grammar – Translation Approach, Communicative Approach and Direct method are applied.
3. For the translation part, lectureres are also required to set up classes and assignments in the
Turnitin service and later use Turnitin as a tool to provide feedback to submitted papers.
4. During the course, participants are taken to join meetings with interpreters organised by Hoa Sen
University or other organizations, at least once if there is.

Task description:
Participants are required to perform individually to do a closed-book mini-test demonstrating
their understanding and skills of translating from Vietnamese into English and English into
Vietnamese. The test takes place during week 4.

Task length Each student has 60 minutes for translating

Mid-term test – Translation (30%)


Task description:
Managed by lecturers in charge and participants are required to perform individually to do a
closed-book mini-test demonstrating their understanding and skills of translating from
Vietnamese into English and English into Vietnamese. The test takes place during week 8.
Task length Each student has 90 minutes for translating

2nd Mini test – Interpreting & Group work (10%)


Task description:
Participants are required to perform in groups to do the 2nd Mini Test demonstrating their
understanding and skills of interpreting from Vietnamese into English and / or English into
Vietnamese. The test takes place during week 11.
Task length Each group has about 20 minutes for interpreting

Final exam – Interpreting Individually (40%)


Task description: Participants are required to perform in groups to do the 2nd Mini Test
demonstrating their understanding and skills of interpreting from Vietnamese into English and /
or English into Vietnamese. The test takes place during week 14 and / or 15.
Task length: Each student has about 15 minutes for interpreting
