Problem Solving

Step 1
Write down what your problem is. Keep it simple, use plain English. E.g. “I’m broke.” or “I’m
worried about school / work.” or “I’ve got no friends.”

Step 2
Write down ALL possible solutions. Even ones that you know you will not use. This is really
important: if you can make yourself write ALL possible solutions then you know all your
options are there for you to see. At this stage simply write them down, don’t start choosing.

Tip: use overleaf so you’ve got plenty of space.

Step 3
Examine all the options you’ve written down and think through their pros and cons.

Step 4
Now choose the option or options you want. It may be that there are some good options to choose
between or it may be you are choosing from the ‘least-bad’ options. Either way, make your choice.
Sometimes you might want to combine more than one option to make a “plan”. TIP: So long
as you have thought through the pros and cons, you are often best then to be guided by your
‘instinct’. TIP2: It is rarely a good thing to choose a plan that goes against your own principles.

Step 5
Do it! This is not simply an exercise, it is important for you to do what you believe to be right.
