Belt Selection Calculation

The document provides calculations to design a conveyor belt system. It determines key specifications of the conveyor belt including its total length, weight, and pull force based on given parameters such as belt width, material properties, load, and operating conditions. It then performs additional calculations to select appropriate shaft dimensions, torque, power requirements, and rotation speed to support the conveyor belt. Temperature changes are also considered and their effects on belt length are calculated.

Given/Assumed

Center to Center Length of the conveyor : L =3050mm

Belt Width : Wb=1000mm
Belt Material : Polyethylene (PE)
Weight of belt/ sq meter : m’b = 5.9kg/m^2
Product load/ meter belt length : m’p = 10 kg/m (Assumed)
Belt Speed : v = 100m/min
Coefficient of thermal expansion : a = 0.21mm/m/°C
Coefficient of friction between belt and wear strip : µT = 0.47
Coefficient of friction between belt and product : µST = 0 (assumed) {from table}
Conveyor operating temperature : T1=20°C
Conveyor operating temperature : T2=0°C
Operational factor smooth operation : C1 =1
Operational factor loaded operation : C2 =0.2
Operational factor v>30 m/min : C3 =0.2
Temperature factor : CT= 1.0
Allowable belt Pull :C4 =6 N/mm
Youngs modulus of stainless-steel : E = 190000N/mm2
modulus of shear stainless steel : G= 75000N/mm2
Sprocket pitch Di : Do=130.4mm
Sag Length : Ls = 300 mm (assumed)
CALCULATIONS: -
1. Total Length of the belt used, Ls = 2* center to center distance + sag length + circumference of roller
= 2 L+ L s+ π d
= 2* 3.05+300+(3.14*0.1304)
=6.81m

2. Total Area of the belt, Ab= Length * Width

=6.81*0.381
=2.594 m2

3. Total Weight of the belt, mb = Ab * m’b

= 2.594 * 5.9
= 15.304 kg

4. Total weight carried by the conveyor at any instance mp = m’p * center to center distance of belt
= 10 *3.05
=30.5 kg

5. Effective Belt pull Fu = μs g(m p +mb )

=0.47*9.81*(30.5+15.304)
= 210.97N

6. Adjustable belts pull,

Cop= C1+C2+C3 =1.4
Fadj = Fu * Cop
= 210.97 *1.4
=295.358 N

7. Calculated adjusted pull/ width of belt, F’adj = F adj∗W b

= 295.358 * 0.381
= 775.21 N/m2
=0.77521N/mm2

8. Admissible belt Pull, Fadm = F’nom * CT

=6*1
= 6N/mm
= 6N/mm
For validation of selected belt F’adj < Fadm
i.e. 0.775 N/mm < 6 N/mm
i.e. 0.775/6 < 1
i.e. 0.129 < 1
or F’adj is12.9 % of Fadm
Since 12.9% < 20%, from the belt manual the spacing between sprockets is160mm.

9. Shaft Load: -

Mass of the shaft, m = 6.8kg

Fs =√ F adj2 +mg 2
=√ (295.358)2 +(6∗9.81)2
= 301.165 N

10. Shaft Torque, M= Fadj * Do/2000

= 295.358 * 130.4/2000
=19.257Nm

11. Shaft Deflection

2
Fs I b
Ys= 5
384 EI
Were,
Fs -Shaft load
Ib =bearing center distance
I= area moment of inertia {for square shaft, I =l4/12}
I.e., I= 404/12
=213.33 mm4

5
∗301.165∗406.43
Therefore Ys = 384
190000∗213333.33

= 0.00519mm

12. Shaft Torsion

90 F adj Do l s
∅=
πG I T

Were
Ls =shaft length
IT =Torsion inertia force

IT =0.141 * l4
= 0.141 * 404
=360960 mm4
90∗295.358∗130.4∗688
Therefore, ∅=
π∗75000∗360960
=0.0280 °
13. Power Required
Fadj V
Ps =
60000
295.358∗47
=
60000
0.231 Kw
Motor available on market 1.5Kw

14. Shaft Revolution

V∗1000
Rs =
π Do
47∗1000
=
π∗130.4
=114.72 = 115 rpm
Selected 120rpm because of availability

15. Change in length of the belt due to temperature.

∆l =l(T2-T1) *a = 6.81 *(0-20) * 0.21 = -27.426mm
∆b =b(T2-T1) *a =0.381 *(0-20) * 0.21 = -1.6002mm
These values can easily be compensated by sag in the belt on the underside.
