Effects of Friction!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis “Vico” N. Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

LESSON

Friction is the force that opposes the motion.


The following are the desirable and undesirable effects of friction on
people and objects:

There is friction between the car tires and the road. This friction keeps
the car from uncontrolled movement in any directions. This is desirable
friction because it gives positive results.

When is friction desirable?

Here are some situations where friction is desirable.

 walking on the sidewalk


 writing on a paper
 holding or grabbing on something to keep it from falling

The moving and touching parts in a machine show undesirable friction.
Grease is used to cut down on the friction between parts and gears in a
machine to maintain the good condition of the parts.

Examples of desirable effects of friction:

1. Friction holds the nail steady on the wood while


we hammer it.

2. Friction secures a foothold when the horse pulls a


cart.

3. Friction lets you write on paper because pen and


pencil cannot work on a frictionless surface.

4. Friction is applied when we step on the car brake.

5. Friction helps us in cleaning the floor while


mopping.

When is friction undesirable?

Here are some situations from which friction is undesirable.

 putting extra effort when walking


 reducing the serviceable life of the machine parts
 not requiring in mechanical parts where two parts of machine meet
Examples of undesirable effects of friction:

1. Friction produces heat in the different machine


parts making it wastes the energy as heat energy.

2. Friction opposes the motion.

3. Friction makes the engines of automobiles use


more fuel.

4. Friction wears out tires.
