Globalization and the need for globally relevant skills

~ILFA SALEEM

In the quest to expand the periphery of man’s visions, we have created an inescapable force that
reshaped our lives. Mankind has stridden past its lands and has learned, conquered, and merged with all
that is around them. Countries have begun to adopt an open culture and have admitted to recording a
person by their skill and not just by their identity, i.e., religion, culture, race, etc. Therefore, globally
relevant skills have become a must in the present times.

Today, an ordinary individual must possess the skills to cope with the present and future potential
developments in this competitive world. These skills have a great impact on our lives as well as others. A
factor that has marked its significance in every possible human endeavor is technology. The ever-
changing nature of technology has made it an obligation for people to strive above and beyond and
make even the simplest technical detail, life-changing, like a new level unlocked in a video game. The
internet, mobile devices, and social media have created an interconnected world where people can
communicate and collaborate across borders. This has led to the outsourcing of jobs to countries where
labor is cheaper and has created a global labor market where companies can recruit talent from
anywhere in the world. In this new global economy, we must have skills that allow us to work in virtual
teams, communicate effectively with people from different cultures and backgrounds, and be adaptable
to change.

Apart from technology, trade has become a driving force in building 21st-century skills. Following the
facilitation of inter-connectedness between countries, trading has made us interdependent. Individuals
seek economic growth as well as to raise the standard of living. To be competitive in this global
marketplace, individuals need to understand the global economy and the dynamics of international
trade. They need to have skills in negotiating, marketing, and understanding foreign cultures and
languages.

Globalization has also led to new challenges such as international terrorism, climate change, and mass
migration. These problems require coordinated efforts across borders and countries, and as such,
individuals require skills that can help them navigate complex international relationships and work
towards common goals.

On a lighter analysis, globalization also leads to the integration of cultures. People interact with each
other from faraway places and provide a way for peace and harmony. This has created a need for
individuals who can navigate cross-cultural relationships and understand the nuances of different
cultures. The ability to speak foreign languages, appreciate art and literature from different cultures and
understand the underlying values and beliefs of different people is critical in today's globalized world.

The youth must be made aware of the vast scope of globalization and should be encouraged to work
towards it. Students should be nurtured and guided in these skills so they can be independent and well-
ready individuals. The ability to process information as well as apply them in a practical manner is an
integral part of gloablization, and being well trained in critical thinking helps them become familiar with
challenges and overcome them with ease. In a rapidly changing world, individuals require the ability to
adapt and be flexible. This might include the ability to learn new skills, work in different contexts, and
adjust to cultural difference, among others. Along with this, personal traits, such as confidence and
curiosity as well the ability to socialize is a must in this time.

In conclusion, globalization has created a world that is rapidly changing, interconnected and
interdependent. To be competitive in this world, we need globally relevant skills that can help us
effectively navigate the global economy, labor market, and cultural landscape. We must invest in
education and training that can provide individuals with these skills, and prepare them for the challenges
and opportunities of the 21st century globalized world. If individuals robustly embrace professional
development with a focus on globally relevant skills, they can harness the advantages of globalization,
enabling them to have greater career prospects and economic opportunities.
