The document discusses operating systems, which are software that controls computer hardware and allows other programs to run. It describes different types of operating systems such as batch, time-sharing, and distributed operating systems. The document also covers the history of operating systems through the four generations from 1945 to present day.

OPERATING

SYSTEM

Presentation By
 Manish Chaudhary
 Isaac Bajacharya
 Smit Shrestha
What is an Operating System……?
USER
 Collection Of Programs
That Controls Operation Of
Computer System.
APPLICATION

 An Operating System Is An
Interface Between User
And Hardware. OPERATING SYSTEM

HARDWARE
INTRODUCTION OF
OPERATING SYSTEM

 It Is A Software That Makes

Computer To Actually Work.
 Acts As An Intermediate
Between User And Computer
Hardware.
 Provides Software A
Platform On Which Other
Programs Can Run.
 Enables All Program That We
Use.
BATCH OPERATING SYSTEM
• The Users Of Batch
Operating System Do not
Interact With Computer
Directly.
• Each User Prepares His
Job On An Offline Device
Like “Punched Card”
And Submits To The
Computer Operator.
• To Speed Up Processing,
Jobs With Similar Needs
Are Batched Together
And Run As A Group.
TIME SHARING OPERATING SYSTEM

 Also Known As MULTIPLE TASKING

SYSTEM.
 Sharing Of “Processor Time” Among
Multiple Process.
Advantages
 Each Tasks Gets An Equal
Opportunities.
 Less Chances Of Duplication.
Disadvantages
• Reliability Problem.
• Problem Of Data Communication.
Examples : Multics, Unix.
DISTRIBUTED OPERATING SYSTEM
 Distributed Operating System use
multiple CPU to execute Multiple
Process.
Advantages
 Enables resources sharing.
 All system are independent from each
other.

Disadvantages
• Failure of main network will stop the
entire communication.
• Very very expensive.
Example: LOCUS….
HISTORY OF OPERATING SYSTEM
Generations of Operating System
FOUR GENERATIONS

 First Generation (1945-1955)

• Only had computer systems that
were used to perform simple
mathematical operations.
• Computer without any operating
system

 Second Generation (1955-1965)

• Introduced the first operating system
in early 1950’s.
• It was called GMOS which was
created by general motors for IBM’s
machine 701.
• Concept of single stream batch
processing.
 Third Generation (1965-1980)
• System of multiprogramming was
introduced which helped
computers to perform multiple
task.
• It made calculations and
multitasks to perform more
accurately.

 Fourth Generation (1980 and

present)
• Creation of Personal computer.
• Windows operating system was
created in 1975.
• Introduced MS-DOS in 1981.
• Windows growth has increased to
became largest operating system
used in technology today.
• With Microsoft, Apple is other
major Operating system created in
1980’s.
