Assignment two

Curatorial exercise – 30% of overall mark

Due: May 5, 2021 (midnight)

Description of task:

In a real-world application of the ideas covered in ART3RES Contemporary Visual Cultures,

you will design an exhibition around objects from the La Trobe University collection. Like an
essay, your exhibition should show research and have an argument. Exhibitions provide a
visual and spatial communication of ideas, and curatorship requires careful analysis of
artworks, and consideration of how design and language communicate information.

For this assignment you have been provided with databases of objects from the La Trobe
University collection on the LMS. You should carefully examine these databases and select
objects to curate into an exhibition, responding to one of the following themes (related to
weeks 6-8 of this subjects).

• Migration and crossing borders: What can artworks tell us about the politically loaded
experience of crossing borders?
• Cultures of consumerism: How does visual culture contribute to our relationship with
capitalism and consumerism?
• Bodies and power: What relationship between power and gender is constructed through
the way bodies are depicted in visual culture?

You can discuss your chosen theme and framework with your tutor.

Throughout the subject you will be introduced to specific examples of exhibitions and displays
that you should draw on for innovative practices in curatorial language. You should also be
visiting exhibitions throughout the semester to understand how curators communicate
through objects, language, and spatial design.

The exhibition should be designed for one of two spaces (see floor plans on the LMS):
The La Trobe Art Institute Gallery, View Street, Bendigo
Or
The exhibition space of Writers Block, in the Borchardt Library at the Bundoora Campus

Your curatorial outline should include:

 A title
 A list of works (drawn from the database)
 A floorplan of where these objects would be positioned in the space
 A diagram of how these objects would be displayed
 A 500 word curatorial introduction to the exhibition, including references where
necessary. This introduction would be placed at the entrance to the exhibition and in the
catalogue, and should articulate your key argument in reference to the theme and
artworks.
 4 x 150 word examples of didactic panels to accompany selected works.
Submission details:

All materials should be compiled into a single pdf for submission.

Please submit this assignment through Turnitin before midnight. All written work should be
typed in at least 12-point font, double-spaced. Please proofread your work carefully and use
standard paragraphing techniques. Check with your lecturer if you have any queries about
this. Late assignments will be penalised (5% per working day). You will find details about
Turnitin submissions on the LMS.

Grading criteria and feedback:

This assignment will be marked on the understanding of critical themes in contemporary
visual cultures, application of key ideas to the selection and display of objects, evidence of
research, innovation and originality in selection and display, and fulfilment of assignment
requirements and attention to detail (presentation of text and diagrams, correct spelling and
grammar, referencing and careful proofreading).
See the rubric on the following page for more details.

The outline has a clear
conceptual framework, and there
is a strong connection between
the selected works, the concept
and the hang/install.
The outline shows a strong
theoretical understanding of the
chosen theme based on key
ideas discussed in the subject.
The selection of objects and
proposed hang is thoughtful and
innovative, showing research into
exhibition models and the
collection.
The writing of the curatorial
introduction and didactic panels is
clear and concise, and conveys
the ideas in an engaging way.
Images (floorplan and diagram of
display) are used effectively to
communicate the ideas of the
show.
The proposal shows attention to
detail in the writing (spelling,
grammar, etc) and the
organisation of supporting
materials.
