CHAPTER # 4

Proposed Methodology

4.1 Main Functions:

The proposed methodology for our project aims to create a smart assistant system
specifically designed for blind individuals. This system encompasses a range of
essential functions that work together to provide a complete and user-friendly
experience.

4.1.1 Object Detection:

Our smart assistant system is built around the powerful YOLO v8 object detection
algorithm. This algorithm stands out for its high accuracy and ability to detect objects
in real-time. By utilizing the camera feed from the Khadas terminal, our system
analyzes the visual data to identify and locate objects present in the user's
environment.

4.1.2 Custom Trained Tree Classifier:

To improve communication with the user, we have carefully trained a Tree Classifier
model. The model uses a well-designed dataset stored in a CSV file, which includes
inputs for left, right, and center positions along with corresponding commands
numbered from 1 to 5. By analyzing the object's position, the Tree Classifier
accurately predicts the appropriate command. This allows our system to provide
relevant feedback to the user in different situations.

4.1.3 Voice Feedback:

Our smart assistant system utilizes an advanced voice feedback module to convey the
predicted sentence to the user. Once the Tree Classifier provides the command
prediction, the system generates high-quality speech output that is clear and natural-
sounding. This ensures that the user receives accurate and easily understandable
information regarding the detected object and its location.

4.1.4 Haptic Motor:

To enhance the user experience, our smart assistant system includes a haptic motor.
This motor delivers tactile feedback to the user, serving as a helpful tool for object
detection and navigation. When an object is detected, the haptic motor produces
subtle vibrations, enabling the user to sense the object's location in relation to their
own position. This feature provides an additional layer of assistance and promotes a
more intuitive interaction with the system.

4.1.5 Weather API Integration:

To provide users with up-to-date weather information, our smart assistant system
seamlessly integrates with a weather API. This integration allows the system to fetch
real-time weather data, which can be presented through voice feedback or displayed
on the terminal's screen. By delivering weather updates, the system empowers users to
make informed decisions and plan their activities based on current weather conditions.
This feature adds an extra level of convenience and helps users stay prepared for the
day ahead.

To ensure optimal performance and utility, our smart assistant system has been
designed to meet several essential functional requirements, which are as follows:

4.2.1.1 Object Detection:

One essential requirement for our smart assistant system is the accurate detection of
objects in the user's environment. By employing advanced object detection algorithms
like YOLO v8, the system can quickly and reliably identify objects in real-time. This
capability is fundamental to the system's overall functionality.

4.2.1.2 Command Prediction:

An essential requirement for our smart assistant system is the accurate and consistent
prediction of commands based on the detected object's position. The system ensures
that the commands generated by the custom trained Tree Classifier model are reliable
and provide reliable communication with the user.

4.2.1.3 Voice Feedback:

Another crucial requirement of our smart assistant system is the generation of clear
and concise voice feedback to effectively communicate the predicted sentence to the
user. The system ensures that the speech output is natural-sounding and easily
understandable, enhancing the overall user experience.

4.2.1.4 Haptic Feedback:

The smart assistant system incorporates a haptic motor that delivers intuitive and
informative tactile feedback. The vibrations generated by the motor are designed to
provide the user with a sense of the object's position relative to their own, assisting in
navigation and enhancing spatial awareness. This functionality ensures that the haptic
feedback is effective in aiding the user's interaction with the environment.

4.2.1.5 Weather Information:

The smart assistant system seamlessly integrates with a weather API to retrieve and
present up-to-date weather information. The system ensures that the weather updates
are accurate and timely, empowering the user to make informed decisions and
effectively plan their activities based on the current weather conditions.

4.2.2 Non-Functional Requirements:

In addition to the functional requirements, our smart assistant system exhibits certain
non-functional qualities and characteristics that enhance its overall performance and
user experience. These non-functional requirements include:

4.2.2.1 Security:
The system prioritizes the security and privacy of user data by employing robust
encryption mechanisms. This ensures that sensitive information, such as location data
or user preferences, is effectively protected from unauthorized access.

4.2.2.2 Performance:
The system delivers real-time object detection and prediction capabilities, ensuring
smooth and seamless operation. It effectively handles a variety of environmental
conditions and object types, minimizing latency and providing reliable performance.

4.2.2.3 Reliability:
The system is highly reliable and robust, minimizing false positives and false
negatives in object detection. It maintains consistent performance over extended
periods of use, without experiencing significant degradation.

4.3 Software Requirements for Development:

The implementation of the proposed methodology requires the following software
requirements:
- VS Code: We use VS Code as the primary integrated development environment
(IDE) for writing the Python script. Its user-friendly interface and comprehensive set
of features make it well-suited for coding and debugging tasks.

4.4 Design:
4.4.1 Object Detection Module:
The object detection module, which is powered by the YOLO v8 algorithm, plays a
crucial role in analyzing the video feed captured by the terminal's camera. Through
the utilization of deep learning techniques, this module effectively detects and locates
objects within the user's environment, delivering precise information regarding their
positions and sizes.

4.4.2 Command Prediction Module:

After the successful detection of objects, the command prediction module takes over.
This module utilizes the custom trained Tree Classifier model to map the position of
the detected object to the corresponding command. By analyzing the object's location
(whether it is on the left, center, or right), the model predicts the appropriate
command and generates a sentence that precisely describes the detected object.

4.4.3 Voice Feedback Module:

The voice feedback module plays a vital role in converting the predicted sentence into
spoken words, facilitating effective communication with the user. Powered by
advanced text-to-speech technology, this module generates natural and easily
