COURSE OUTLINE

Academic Term: Fall 2011-2012 ICourse Code and Title : MAT-1102, DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS
AND COORDINATE GEOMETRY.

II-

Credit : 3 Credit Hours (Theory) III- Course Description :

Domain and range, limit, continuity and differentiability of functions, Rolles, Mean value and Taylors theorem, analysis of functions, derivative of functions of several variables, homogeneous function and Eulers theorem, rectangular coordinates in three dimensions, direction cosines and direction ratio of a line, pair of straight lines, scalar and vector products of vectors, plane and straight line using vectors, identification of conics.

IV- Objectives:
We teach Differential calculus, vector and geometry in this course. Students embarking on such courses diverse to different core subjects- engineering (EEE, chemical, civil, architectural), -computer (COE, CSE, CIS) biological (molar and genetic) engineering-like those in UK and USA. We have therefore revised and constituted a course syllabus that assume knowledge only of material that can be expected to be familiar to all the current generation of students starting physical science and engineering courses at universities. We aimed at building up a basic foundation of mathematical precision and tools essential for growing engineers and also the hierarchy of mathematical materials for engineers of research in future. Teaching Strategy: The general aim of our pedagogy is staged in three phases- first is a qualitative introduction from a physical point of view,- second is a formal presentation avoiding deliberately the mathematical tougher materials on the ground that- This is the real world; we must behave reasonably. Finally we worked out some problems fully drawn from physical science and engineering.
