1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Hospitals are among the most critical institutions in any society, and managing them can
be a daunting task. An effective hospital management system is crucial for streamlining
operations, improving efficiency, and enhancing patient care. In recent years, information
technology has played an essential role in transforming hospital management. This
project aims to develop a comprehensive hospital management system to improve the
operations of healthcare facilities.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Managing hospitals can be a daunting task, and healthcare providers face several
challenges when providing quality care to patients. Hospitals have to deal with increasing
patient volumes, complex administrative tasks, and rapidly evolving medical
technologies. In addition, hospitals must comply with strict regulatory requirements,
which can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, there is a need to develop a
hospital management system that can improve hospital operations, enhance patient care,
and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The primary objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive hospital management
system that can improve hospital operations and enhance patient care. The specific
objectives of the study are:
1. To identify the requirements of the hospital management system through
stakeholder engagement and literature review.
2. To design a hospital management system architecture that meets the identified
requirements.
3. To develop a user-friendly interface for the hospital management system.
4. To implement and test the hospital management system to ensure its functionality
and security.
5. To evaluate the effectiveness of the hospital management system in enhancing
hospital operations and patient care.
1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
This study will focus on developing a hospital management system that can manage
patient records, appointments, medical procedures, and laboratory tests. The system will
also include features for inventory management, billing, and pharmacy management.
However, the system will not cover aspects of hospital management such as human
resource management and financial management.
The study's limitations include the availability of data and resources for developing the
hospital management system. The study will also be limited to a specific healthcare
facility, and the results may not be generalizable to other hospitals.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study's significance is that it will contribute to the development of an effective
hospital management system that can improve hospital operations, enhance patient care,
and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. The hospital management system
can help healthcare providers make informed decisions, improve resource utilization, and
reduce medical errors.
1.6 METHODOLOGY
The system development life cycle (SDLC) is a popular methodology for developing
information systems. The SDLC consists of several stages, including requirements
gathering, system design, system implementation, and system testing and maintenance.
The SDLC enables developers to design systems that meet the needs of stakeholders, are
scalable, and can be maintained easily.
1.7 SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
The first stage of the SDLC involves requirements gathering, where developers interact
with stakeholders to identify the features that the system should have. In the hospital
management system, the features include patient management, appointment scheduling,
electronic medical records, and laboratory management, among others. After
requirements gathering, the system design stage involves designing the system
architecture, user interface, and database schema.
