CMT Assignment2

This document describes procedures for conducting tests on aggregates to determine their specific gravity, water absorption, abrasion resistance, and density. It provides objectives, lists required equipment and apparatus according to ASTM standards, and outlines test procedures for specific gravity and water absorption, abrasion resistance using a Los Angeles machine, and compacted and loose bulk density. PROCEDURE :
1)About 2 kg of aggregate sample is washed thoroughly to remove fines, drained
and placed in wire basket and immersed in distilled water at a temperature between
22- 32º C and a cover of at least 5cm of water above the top of basket.

2)Immediately after immersion the entrapped air is removed from the sample by
lifting the basket containing it 25 mm above the base of the tank and allowing it to
drop at the rate of about one drop per second. The basket and aggregate should
remain completely immersed in water for a period of 24 hour afterwards.

3)The basket and the sample are weighed while suspended in water at a
temperature of 22° – 32°C. The weight while suspended in water is noted =W1g.

PROCEDURE :
4)The basket and aggregates are removed from water and allowed to drain for a few
minutes, after which the aggregates are transferred to the dry absorbent clothes. The empty
basket is then returned to the tank of water jolted 25 times and weighed in water= W2 g.

5)The aggregates placed on the absorbent clothes are surface dried till no further moisture
could be removed by this cloth. Then the aggregates are transferred to the second dry cloth
spread in single layer and allowed to dry for at least 10 minutes until the aggregates are
completely surface dry. The surface dried aggregate is then weighed =W3 g

6)The aggregate is placed in a shallow tray and kept in an oven maintained at a temperature
of 110° C for 24 hrs. It is then removed from the oven, cooled in an air tight container and
weighted =W4 g.

OBJECTIVE
The Los Angeles abrasion test of a

sample of aggregate is performed in a
Los Angeles abrasion machine to obtain
information for the following purposes.
This test is prescribed by ASTTO T96
or ASTM C131 to determine the

iron or steel ball. It has a diameter of
about 48 mm and each ball weighs 2386 (Part IV) – 1963
between 390 and 445 grams. At the
time of the test, six to twelve balls are
placed in the drum along with the
material at the time of the test.

PROCEDURE
1)Select the grading of the aggregate to be used in the test. The grading of the
aggregate used in construction is selected as appropriately as possible.

2)Take a 5 kg sample of aggregate for grading A, B, C, and D, and a 10 kg sample for

E, F, and G grading.

3)Abrasive charge balls are selected according to Table 1 according to the aggregate
grading sample.

4)The aggregate and standard ball are inserted into the cylinder drum. And its cover
is fixed.

PROCEDURE

5)The cylinder drum is then rotated by the machine at 30 to 33 rounds per minute.
500 for gradings like A, B, C, and D and 1000 round for E, F, and G grading.

6)After a certain number of cylinder drums rotates, the automatic machine shuts
down The aggregate sample is then discharged into a tray.

7) The sample discharged from the machine is mounted on an IS sieve of 1.70 mm.

8)The material discharged in this way weighs more than 1.7 mm and weighs one
gram.

DENSITY OF AGGREGATES TEST

SAMPLE PREPARATION

Take the required amount of test sample from the bulk sample using any sample
reduction methods.
The test is normally carried out on dry material, but when bulking tests are
required, material with a given percentage of moisture may be used.
DENSITY OF AGGREGATES TEST

A. PROCEDURE FOR COMPACTED BULK DENSITY

1)Measure the volume of the cylindrical metal measure by pouring water into the
metal measure and record the volume “V” in litre.

2)Fill the cylindrical metal measure about one-third full with thoroughly mixed
aggregate and tamp it 25 times using tamping bar.

3)Add another layer of one-third volume of aggregate in the metal measure and give
another 25 strokes of tamping bar.
DENSITY OF AGGREGATES TEST

A. PROCEDURE FOR COMPACTED BULK DENSITY

4) Finally fill aggregate in the metal measure to over-flowing and tamp it 25 times.

5) Remove the surplus aggregate using the tamping rod as a straightedge.

6)Determine the weight of the aggregate in the measure and record that weight “W”
in kg.
DENSITY OF AGGREGATES TEST

B. PROCEDURE FOR LOOSE BULK DENSITY

1)Measure the volume of the cylindrical metal measure by pouring water into the metal
measure and record the volume “V” in litre.

2)Fill the cylindrical measure to overflowing by means of a shovel or scoop, the aggregate
being discharged from a height not exceeding 5 cm above the top of the measure.

3)Level the top surface of the aggregate in the metal measure, with a straightedge or
tamping bar.

4) Determine the weight of the aggregate in the measure and record the weight “W” in kg.
