Learning aims:

- to identify different pets in English.

-to develop awareness of pet’s needs.
- to develop motor skills by doing animal actions.
- to develop listening comprehension skills by performing the actions when listening
to the name of the animal.
- to develop fine motor skills by making pet collars.

Learning focus:

-Numbers 1-10 (revision)

-Members of the family (revision)
-Colours (revision)
-Pets (Dog, Cat, Fish, Rabbit, Bird)
-Have Got – Need
-Actions: Fly, hop, walk, swim, fly

Integration of skills:

Through the different activities (routine (circle time), songs, craft) children are
bound to improve their listening and speaking skills while building their confidence
and fostering creativity. Children will also develop their motor skills by making a pet
collar.

Multiple intelligences:

Linguistic Intelligence: Supported by talking to the teacher during circle time and
following activities.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence: Supported by working with numbers in routine

activities and in circle time.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence: Supported by art craft activity (pet collar)

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence: Supported by performing some animal movements.

Musical Intelligence: Supported by listening and singing to the different tunes.

Interpersonal Intelligence: Supported by working in group during circle time and by

making a dog house all together.
Intrapersonal Intelligence: Supported by asking each child how he/she feels.

Materials and resources:

Video
Flashcards (Pets) (print and laminate)

Bag
Stuffed Dog

String
Beads
Large Box
Cardboard
Paint (Red, Green, Yellow)
Paint brushes (15)
Sponges

Possible contingencies:

-Children may be afraid of touching inside the bag. If they don’t feel like
touching the dog, teacher will take a look again and start describing it: It has 4
legs, it has 2 ears, it has a tail, it barks
-Children may talk at the same time as the teacher. (Teacher will ask for silence
and repeat)
-Children may spill the paint (Explain proper use- Bring enough paper towels to
clean up)
-Children may not understand the instructions. (Teacher will show them. If
they still don’t understand, teacher may use L1 to explain and then repeat again
in L2)
-Children may get distracted or bored during circle time. (Teacher will make a
quick movement activity for children to release some energy) (walk, walk, jump
and then sit down)
-Children may not guess what’s inside the bag (teacher will give them clues and
if they still don’t guess it she will show it and say it is a dog)

Classroom management strategies:

To ask for silence I will use put my finger on my lips and make the “shhh” sound.
–“It´s time to be quiet and listen to the story/song…”

If it doesn´t work out, I will say “zip it, lock it put it in your pocket” showing them
how I close my mouth, lock it and put the “key” in my pocket.
Other choice: “1,2,3 eyes on me”

To organize children for circle time I will sing “Big Big Circle” to the tune of Frere
Jacques
Big big circle
Big big circle
Round round you
Round round you

To give instructions I will get children’s visual attention first. (One, Two, Three, eyes
on me)
Then, I will use simple language and single instructions (one instruction at a time)
using an appropriate tone and making use of visual aids.

To make sure that children have understood the lesson children will be asked (in
the game) to give physical responses. They will also have to decorate a doghouse and
make a dog collar.

Assessment: collecting information and reporting your findings

Assessment will be based on observations and questions. In this class children should
be able to identify different pets in English. They will also be asked to perform pets’
actions.

Crazy Finger: teacher wiggles her finger and points her finger at each child and they
will count in turns from zero to 10. There are number flashcards in the classroom.
Teacher will help children to count by one from 10 to 20 and then by tens from 10 to
100.

Lead-in
-Ok everybody! Look at this! I have a mystery bag over here! Who wants to touch to
guess what there is inside?
(Teacher will show children a bag with a stuffed dog inside. Teacher will whisper the
word mystery and do the mimics so children can understand there is something
inside and they have to guess what)

bird / fish ?
(Teacher will ask children if they have any pets while showing flashcards.) (She will
model children’s answers by repeating No, I haven’t, or I have got 1, 2, 3… etc)

-Very good! And do you take care of your pets? We need to take care of them, they
need food, water, a house ….. they need to do exercise and move. Do you know how
these animals move?
(Teacher will be holding flashcards and pretend to be jogging when she talk about
exercising)

Development of the sequence of activities

listening skills.

-Fish! Let’s swim like a fish!
-Cat! Let’s walk and meow like a cat!
-Bird! Let’s all fly like a bird!

and make the sound)

Great! Ok. One more time, I say the name of the animal and you move like it to do
some exercise!

Oh, after that the pets are probably tired! This little dog here needs a house to rest
but he hasn’t got one.

decorate) (Children may have to take turns)

-This house is amazing! It looks so nice, you did a great job! Now this dog can rest in
the house. But wait….. what is the name of this dog? It doesn’t have a collar with the
name on it. What’s your name doggy???
(Teacher will show them the dog, its neck… she will be wondering where the collar
may be)
