1. Yourself, family, friends and hometown
Let’s talk about yourself

 What is your full name?

My full name is Cam Thu Thao, but you can call me Thao.

 When is your birthday?

My birthday is on December 12th.

 Where are you from?

I come from Son La city, the city is a mountainous province located in the Northwest
region of Vietnam, a land of convergence of many ethnic groups, with many special
festivals, historical sites and charming landscapes
 Where do you live now?
Well, I’m now living in Son La which is a mountainous province located in the Northwest
region of Vietnam and I have lived here for almost 18 years now. I’m quite happy to be
here, I have to say, because this vibrant city is really on the move with higher living
standard and a lot of, you know, entertainment attractions.

 What do you like about where you live? What don’t you like?
One of the best things about my area is its unique and diverse culinary culture, such as
five-color sticky rice, lam rice, Kitchen guard meat... Besides, entertainment comes in
many forms. From movie theaters to shopping malls to public parks and everything in
between, my city is exciting.
On the other hand, Son La cities are often polluted such as air pollution, water pollution,
noise pollution. Living in the city, I often encounter many narrow alleys, cramped houses.
It is not as spacious and airy as in many villages. It causes me to feel uncomfortable,
suffocated.
 Are you a student?
Currently, I am an 18 year old student studying at University of social sciences and
humanities, Vietnam, majoring in social work.

 How do you get to school?

Normally, my friends drive me to school. But sometimes, when they are busy with work, I
will ride my motorbike or take the bus.

Let’s talk about your typical day.

- What is a typical day of your life?/ What is your typical day like?
- What time do you get up and go to bed?
- Is it different at weekends?
- What do you like doing most when you are with your friend?
- Do you wish to change anything about your life?
- Which part of the day do you like most? Why?
- What do you usually do when you are upset?
- Do you spend time for your family?
Well, on a typical day, I get up early in the morning, take a shower and eat my
breakfast. Then I hurry for my classes and the bad traffic kills some time on the
roads. After I reach the university, I need to concentrate on my study & classes and I
return home at around 6:30 pm. I eat my dinner at around 8:30 pm, read the daily
newspapers or a book, watch the news channel and browse the internet. I spend time
with my family till 11:30 and then prepare to go to bed. I usually sleep at around
12:30 and always try to read something or listen to music before I sleep. If I have an
exam, I study till late night.

On the contrary, during my weekend, I wake up late in the morning, grab the
newspaper and look at the headlines and in some interesting news sections. Then I
take a shower and eat my breakfast. I watch some TV programmes and then go
outside to meet my colleagues/ friends who live nearby. I spend some time outside
and then return home before lunch. In the noon I take a nap and in the evening I
either go to a shopping mall to buy necessary things or visit a theatre to enjoy a
movie with friends/ family members or go to a park to walk. In the evening I either
play video games or spend time reading books or browsing the internet. I usually take
my dinner at around 10.30 pm during my days off and go to bed after 1.30 am.
Let’s talk about your future plans.
-What are your arrangements for your future?
- Which do you prefer: a fast life or a slow life?
Life is a non-stop endeavor. Every day, we always try to make ourselves better and
better. At each stage I will make plans to develop myself. My personal growth plan
includes a short-term plan and a long-term plan. Short-term plans are usually set by
month and by date.
Long-term plans will be set annually. My personal development plan is divided into 3
parts. Health, knowledge, entertainment. In my health plan, I will set exercise time goals,
plan for proper eating and time, and sleep. In the knowledge plan, I will list the books to
read and aim to accomplish them. At the same time, I also set out a path to take courses
for my job. Finally the entertainment part. I will build a list of the songs I want to listen
to and the movies I want to watch.

From the plan set out to develop myself, I can both ensure good body condition, improve
more and more while creating a reasonable entertainment space for myself. Every day I
live with the plans I set out. A life of purpose keeps me on track for a better future.

Let’s talk about your family.

- How many members are there in your family?
- Who is closest to you? Who can you share things with?
I am close to every single family member in my own way. However, in terms of
sharing personal secrets and spending time, I am more close to my mother than my
father. My younger sister considers me her best friend and thus we have a unique
relationship.
- Does your family usually spend time together?
- How many sisters/brothers do you have?
- Do you usually spend time with your brothers or sisters?
- How many people are there in your family?
- What are your parents’ job?
- Who is the bread winner in your family?
- Who do you talk with most in your family? Why?
Our family is small .There are four people in my family: my parents, my sister and
I.My father is forty-four years old. He is a worker in ABC company. He has a good sense
of humor and he always tells many funny stories to make us smile. My father likes
gardening very much as well as watching TV programs. Unlike most men, my father likes
cooking and he cooks very well. My mother is at the same age as my father. My mothers
is also a worker. She likes cooking and traveling too, so whenever my parents have free
time, we go some interesting place to relax. It's a great time. My sister is eight years old.
SHe studies in primary school. she is interested in play the guitar and sports like
batminton. And I am student studying at University of social sciences and humanities,
majoring in social work. However, being the eldest child in my family I try to help with
the household chores such as wash the dishes, mop the floor and so on. Members of our
family have very close relationships with each other. We often share our feelings, and
whenever problems come up, we discuss them frankly and find solutions quickly. In sum,
My family is important to me. I love my family very much.
Let’s talk about your friends.
-How many friends do you have? Is there anyone close to you?
When I was in my early teens, I preferred many friends but nowadays I have few
friends but they are very close to me.
- What do you usually do with your friends?
I enjoy playing outdoor games, watching movies in a theatre, having
conversations related to recent political and international issues, sharing my updates and
concerns, going long drive with my friends. The best part is the open conversation we can
have related to almost any topic.
-What does a best friend need to do?
- Tell me about a good friend you have?
The best friendship is to be in mind, in the feelings of two each other, creating a
good friendship. For me a best friend must be someone who understands me, is someone
who cares, shares everything with me, I have a friend, that is Thanh. Thanh is a kind
person, gentle, confident, strong person, always protecting and helping people. The
height and temperament, the other point is that we have different preferences, different
dreams, I really like this friend because she is my best match, she and mk both consider
the other friend to be friends.
Let’s talk about your house or living place.
- Do you live in a house or a flat?
- What do you like about the place where you live?
- Do you think it is better to live in the city centre or in the countryside?
- Which room in your house do you like best?
- Is there anything you would like to change about your house?
Well, I live in a house. This is basically the house my grandfather used to own. After his
death my father inherited it and he improved the construction of the house in many
aspects. This is a big house with over 2 acres of area. The main house has a three-storied
building and the large garden in front of the house is the most attractive part of our house.
I would say we have more people working for the maintenance of this big house than the
number of family members we have.
• Do you think it’s better to live in a house or an apartment? Why?
I would say living in a house has far more advantages than living in an apartment. Big
houses are spacious, have a garden and other places while an apartment has
comparatively smaller rooms and no additional place. The houses give us an opportunity
to live freely and there are very few privacy issues. On the contrary, an apartment has
some rooms with no place for gardening and playing. The whole building is shared with
many other families and that creates the privacy issues. You can reconstruct or build new
facilities in a house which is quite impossible in an apartment. However, maintaining a
big house requires more effort than it is required for an apartment. Finally, I would say I
always prefer living in a house than living in an apartment.
4. What do you like most about your house?/ which part of your house do you like most?/
Which room is your favourite?
It’s definitely my own bedroom. It’s where I can do whatever I want without getting
disturbed and irritated by others. I call it my comfort zone or hideaway. After a long and
stressful working day, I just want to be alone in my bedroom, chilling out with a movie or
something.
1. Do you live in a house or a flat?
For the better part of the last 4 years, I’ve been living in a mini flat in a small side street
in the heart of the city. All amenities are available in the proximity of my home, like
supermarkets, restaurants, fashion stores, cinemas or hospitals. I can easily grab anything
I need in just a few minutes.
Let’s talk about weather in your hometown.
- What is the weather like in your hometown?
Well, as you could probably tell, I’m currently residing in Vietnam, which is a tropical
country. When it comes to the weather here, for the most part, it’s kinda scorching hot
and humid year-round. I mean, there have been reports about the heatwaves of over 40
degrees celsius in Hanoi in the recent years during summer. In winter, it used to be frigid
but now it’s a bit more pleasant and bearable. And I guess it’s due to global warming.
