INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS
This is a practical application task that tests your ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired
in the vocational subject. The work required from you is an important and compulsory component
of your studies.
1. GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 Study the task carefully.
1.2 Note the mark and time allocations per sub-task and for the task as a whole.
1.3 Note the submission date(s).
1.4 Study the resources required carefully.
1.5 Use the assessment tool as guidance on how your work will be marked.
1.6 You are required to provide proof that you submitted work done by yourself.
You must design and draw the circuits, identify the tools to be used, components to be
wired and compile a material list. You must further perform the installation in accordance
with SANS 10142 Code of Practice, test, fault find and operate the installation.
5. ASSESSMENT TOOL
You must first draw your own sequence lighting circuits and submit it to the lecturer for
marking purposes. The lecturer will thereafter provide you with the correct sequence lighting
circuits for wiring and installation purposes only.
installation.
Sub-task 1: Plan the task

Sub-task 2: Perform the installation
• The work area was prepared for the installation task. 2
• All protective devices were of correct rating and capable of withstanding the 2
prospective faults.
• The correct tools were used. 2
• The wire ends were stripped and prepared correctly. 3
• The wire insulation was checked for damage. 3
• The wires were terminated and secured correctly. 2
• The wiring was done according to the circuit specifications. 2 30
• The circuits were correctly supplied and powered. 1
• The wiring was checked and complied with electrical standards and safety principles 2
of SANS 10142.
• The circuit and operation were tested. 3
• Personal protective equipment was used at all times. 2
• Test instruments were used confidently/correctly. 2
• The student proved via switching the circuit works. 2
• Good housekeeping and work safety were adhered to throughout the assessment 2

When you press the start push button, the green lamp switches ON and the motor rotates
in either the clockwise or anti-clockwise direction continuously, when the stop push button
is pressed, the red lamp switches ON, the green lamp switches OFF and the motor stops.
The motor must be protected against overcurrent, overload conditions and all emergency
conditions.
You must draw the power circuit and the control circuit, identify the components to be wired,
wire, test and operate the installation in accordance with SANS10142 Code of Practice.

You are required to install, test and commission an automatic three-phase AC Star/Delta
starter and compile a report on the various tests and methods used during this task.
The main contactor with the pneumatic timer is used because the main contactor is always
energised. In the middle is the Delta contactor with a thermal overload for motor protection
in case the motor exceeds the ampere rating set on the thermal overload. On the right is
the Star contactor which is the first contactor to be energised with the main contactor. Then
when the timer reaches its time limit, the Star contactor de-energises, the Delta contactor
energises and the motor runs at full load.
You must draw the power circuit and control circuit, identify the components to be wired,
wire, test and operate the installation in accordance with SANS 10142 Code of Practice.
You are expected to properly construct, connect and utilise all the necessary components
as per the instructions handed to you.
