Description of Consonants

According to the Place of


Articulation
Class: II M.A. –S3PEL11-Unit:I

• Consonants can be described according to the place of
articulation or the articulators involved in the articulation.
• The label of the consonant is derived from the name of the
passive articulator.
• The position of the glottis determines if a sound is voiced or
voiceless.
• The position of the soft palate determines if a sound is an oral
sound or a nasal sound
Bilabial consonants

• Active Articulator : Lower lip


• Passive Articulator : Upper lip

• Sounds: /p/ /b/ /m/

Labio- Dental
• Active Articulator : Lower lip
• Passive Articulators : the upper front teeth

• Sounds: /f/ /v/

• Fan, van
Dental or Interdental
• Active Articulator : the blade of the tongue
• Passive Articulators : the upper front teeth

• Sounds: // / ð/

Alveolar
• Active Articulator : the tip or the blade of the tongue
• Passive Articulator : the teeth-ridge or alveolar-ridge or alveolum

• Sounds: /t/ /d/ /n/ /s/ /z/ /l/

Post - Alveolar
• Active Articulator : the tip of the tongue

• Passive Articulator : the part of the roof of the mouth that lies
immediately after the teeth- ridge

• Sounds: /r/

Palatal- Alveolar
• Active Articulators : the blade of the tongue and the front of the
tongue
• Passive Articulator: the teeth-ridge and the hard palate
(the blade of the tongue touches or brought very close to the teeth-ridge and,
at the same time, the front of the tongue is brought very close to the hard
palate)
