1. This is a booklet of different types of figurative language. Figurative 


language consists of words we use to add imagery to our writing. We'll be 
using it in the future when we write poetry. 

2. You may type all your answers in this document. 


Name:
Hyperbole  
A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration. An example of this in a sentence is, 
"My books weigh a ton." The books could not weigh a ton, but the exaggeration 
makes the sentence more interesting than saying, "My books are heavy." 

A. Instructions: Read each sentence below. If the sentence contains hyperbole, 


write: yes, if it doesn't have one write: no.  

a. I'm so hungry I could eat a whole elephant!  yes 

b. May is the nicest month of the year.  no 

c. Her brightly coloured dress hurt his eyes.  yes 

d. I ate all of my salad for lunch.   no 

e. The roof rose up and down to the rhythm of the loud music.  yes

B. Instructions: Below is a paragraph about going to the grocery store. Rewrite 


the underlined portions of the paragraph by adding hyperbole. 

Kristen and her mother went to the grocery store on Saturday. As they 
arrived at the store, it began to rain cats and bogs . When they entered the 
door, they were drenched in water. Kristen selected a shopping cart, but it's 
wheels were not straight. It shook like an earthquakeAnd she pushed it down 
the aisle. Her mother quickly selected the groceries on the list. While they 
didn't have very many items, it was expensive as a trip to Italy. They 
grabbed the bags of groceries, which were Heavier than an elephant, and 
returned home. 

Simile 
Name:
A simile is when you make a comparison of two things using the words "like" 
or "as". For example: "She was as quiet as a mouse." / "He was slow like a sloth" 

A. Instructions: complete the sentences below by finishing the simile in each 


sentence.  

a. He quickly discovered that his new friend was as smart as Eli 

b. With his long legs and neck he stretched as tall as a Giraffe  

c. The crashing waves in the ocean were foamy like Whipped cream  

d. He sharpened his pencil until its point was sharp like A needle  

e. The rain danced on the roof like Ballerinas  

f. The old bread was as dry as The desert  

g. The yowling of the cat at night was like a wolf howling  

h. Cole's taco chips were as crunchy as Plastic

Metaphor 
Name:
A metaphor is when you make a direct comparison of two unlike things. When 
you make the comparison you cannot use the words "like" or "as". You describe 
something like it is the other thing.  
For example: "He was a giant, towering over his classmates." 

A. Instructions: All of the sentences below use metaphors. Explain what each 
one means.  
a. The teeth of the crocodile are little white knives.  
● The crocodile's teeth are very sharp. 

b. The bird fired a white missile, which exploded on my windshield.  


● The bird pooped on my windshield  

c. The crab was a dancing pair of scissors, clicking across the sand. 
● The crab was snapping its clas across the sand  

d. Her long hair is an ocean of waves.  


● Her hair was really long  

e. Her diary was her best friend, guarding her secrets quietly. 
● She kept all her secrets in her diary  

Personification 
Name:
Personification gives characteristics of human beings to something that is 
not human. In other words you're making something that's not human, think, act, 
or emote like a human being. 
 
Instructions:write a sentence personifying the object in each phrase below.  
 
Example: clouds -->The sad clouds were ready to spill their tears upon the 
funeral.  
1. a hungry wolf 

● The wolf cried because it was so hungry.  


2. a comfortable couch  

● The couch snuggled me close as I fell asleep.  


3. a car  

● The car was tired of driving all day.  


4. a cell phone  

● The cell phone was very happy to be used all the time  
5. a butterfly  

● The butterfly danced in the Wind  


6. a dinosaur  

● The Dinosaur Stomped around on everything in its path  


7. stars  

● The stars twinkled and danced all night  


8. mountains  

● The mountain stood tall all day  


9. ocean waves  

● The waves bounce up and down like a ball  


10. a boiling pot 

● The Boiling Pot belched water all over the place.
