All modifications of the diesel engine "D-
245" of the Minsk Motor Plant are 4-stroke
piston four-cylinder engines. The
arrangement of cylinders in them is in-
line, vertical, diesel fuel injection is direct, with compression ignition. Initially, it
was a typical tractor engine - for Belarus MTZ-100, -102, -890, -892 tractors ,
VG-1201 vibratory rollers of the Dormash Rybinsk plant, and other road
equipment. Power units "D-245" are equipped with the products of the Oryol
loader plant and the Tver excavator plant, the Petrozavodsk Onega tractor
plant. But the forced versions of this motor have found wide application in
medium-duty trucks, starting with the ZIL-5301 Bull, and in buses.

About the history of the model


"D-245" - the development of the early 80s of the twentieth century by the
design bureau of the Minsk Motor Plant. When creating this motor, the
specialists relied on the rich experience in the production and operation of the
D-240 engines, for the most massive wheeled tractor model in history - the
MTZ-80 . The D-245 motor entered mass production in 1984. In this significant
year for MMZ, the three millionth diesel engine rolled off its assembly line.

Tractor "Belarus MTZ-102".

With the privatization of the Moscow Likhachev Plant and the start of
production of trucks of a new format on it - the ZIL-5301 Bychok, it was the D-
245 tractor that was chosen as the engine for this model. During 1992-1993,
the first automotive version of the simple, reliable, durable and inexpensive D-
245 was developed at MMZ. The first automobile modification "D-245.1" was
intended specifically for deliveries to the AMO "ZIL".

In the following 90s, various changes and improvements were made to the
design of this version, taking into account operating experience, and new auto
modifications for trucks and buses were produced: "D-245.9", "D-245.12", "D-
245.20"

ZIL-5301 Bull.

In 1999, the D-245.16 tractor diesel engine was put into serial production,
especially for the Onezhets skidder tractors of the Petrozavodsk OTZ. In 2000,
they mastered the serial production of the D-245.2 tractor engine. In 2001, the
administration of UE "MMZ" received certificates of compliance with Euro-2
standards (UNECE rules 24-03, 85, 49-02B) for the D-245 automobile versions.
In the same year, a contract for the supply of D-245 engines was concluded
with the Dnepropetrovsk Southern Machine-Building Plant. And at the

prestigious Moscow Motor Show in August 2001, the D-245.11 E2 and D-
245.30 E2 engines for trucks and buses were presented.

At the 2005 victory parade, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of victory in the
Great Patriotic War, cars stylized as wartime paraded through Red Square. All
of them were manufactured at the Likhachev Automobile Plant and equipped
with D-245.9 power units.

In the same 2005, the first prototypes of the D-245 engines, which already
meet Euro-3 environmental standards, were delivered to GAZ, ZIL, and MAZ.

The year 2008 was marked by the start of production of D-245 automobile
diesel engines that meet modern Euro-4 standards. In the fall of 2008, the first
D-245.9E4 engines were sent to PAZ and GAZ after bench tests. International
certification of four modifications of "D-245" for compliance with Euro-4
standards was held in 2011, and from January 2012 their mass production
began.

In October 2013, the D-245.7E4 engine, designed to equip the new


medium-duty truck of the Gorky Automobile Plant Gazon Next, received a
certificate for compliance with UNECE Rules Nos. 24, 49 and 85. In 2014,
prototypes of the D-245.9E5 engine of the current Euro-5 environmental
standard were manufactured for the Pavlovsk Bus Plant.

In 2016, the D-245.35E5 engine of the Euro-5 environmental standard passed


the relevant certification, the results of which are recognized in all European
countries that have acceded to the Geneva Agreement.

The main assembly units, systems, components and parts of the D-245 diesel
engine are as follows:

body (cylinder block and suspension);


gas distribution mechanism (cylinder head, valves and valve lifters,
cylinder head cover, exhaust tract (collector), distribution mechanism);
crank mechanism (pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft and flywheel”;

lubrication system (breather, oil crankcase, oil pump receiver and oil
pump itself, oil filter with liquid-oil heat exchanger, turbocharger oil lines);
power supply system (fuel pipelines and fuel equipment, fine and coarse
filters, air cleaner and air outlet path);
cooling system (pump, thermostat, fan).

In order to improve the technical and economic performance of the engine, a


turbocharger with intercooling of the charge air was used in the intake system.
The addition of a turbocharger with adjustable boost pressure to the boost
design made it possible to obtain better throttle response, which is provided by
an increased torque value at a low crankshaft speed; as well as the proper level
of compliance with the standards for the content of harmful emissions in
exhaust gases.

To ensure uninterrupted engine start at low outdoor temperatures, glow plugs


are mounted in the diesel head, plus the liquid-oil heat exchanger available on
these engines ensures that the optimum oil temperature in the lubrication
system is quickly reached, maintaining it at the right level during operation.

Cylinder block
This is the main body part of the diesel engine - a rigid cast iron casting. In the
vertical bores of the BC there are four sleeves, removable, made of cast iron of
a special grade. Coolant circulates between the walls of the cylinder block and
the liners.

The design of the cylinder block provides for the presence of tides with covers
for five camshaft bearings; an oil channel from which lubrication is supplied to
these bearings and crankshaft bearings; nozzles in the n parts of the 2nd and
4th bearings - for cooling the pistons with oil jets.

The outer surfaces of the BC have mating planes - for attaching an oil filter, a
water pump, fuel filters, a distribution board.

cylinder head
This is a cast iron casting with inlet and outlet valves in the internal cavities.
Inlet - with a screw profile. To carry out the removal of heat in the cylinder
head, internal cavities are provided for the circulation of the coolant. The valve
seats of the cylinder head are made of an alloy with heat-resistant and wear-
resistant properties.

On top of the cylinder head are mounted racks, rocker shaft + rocker arms,
head cover, intake manifold, and a cover cap closing the valve mechanism. On
the left (from the side of the fuel pump) there are four nozzles in the head, as
well as four glow plugs; on the right is the exhaust manifold. The connection
between the head and the cylinder block is sealed with a gasket made of
asbestos-free fabric, which is reinforced with perforated steel sheet.

The steel crankshaft has 5 main and 4 connecting rod journals. The connecting
rod journals of the crankshaft have cavities for additional centrifugal oil
cleaning. The cavities of the necks are covered with threaded plugs.

The axial force of the crankshaft is perceived by 4 bimetallic (or aluminum


alloy) half rings, which are installed in the bores of the BC and the cover of the
5th main bearing. Front and rear crankshaft sealed cuffs. At its front end, gears
for the gas distribution drive, oil pump, water pump drive pulley and generator
are installed. A flywheel is mounted on the rear flange of the shaft.

The pistons are made of aluminum alloy. In the bottom of the pistons there are
combustion chambers displaced relative to their axes. There are 3 grooves in
the upper part of the piston - compression rings are installed in 2 of them, and
an oil scraper ring in the 3rd. The piston bosses have holes for the piston pins.
Piston pins are hollow, they are made of nickel-chromium steel.

Connecting rod steel, I-section, with a sleeve pressed into the upper head. The
upper head of the connecting rod and the sleeve have holes for lubricating the
piston pin. The shells of the main and connecting rod bearings of the crankshaft
are made of a bimetallic strip. The flywheel is made of cast iron and bolted to
the crankshaft flange.

Gas distribution mechanism


It consists of a camshaft, intake and exhaust valves, and elements of their
installation and drive: pushers, rods, rocker arms, adjusting screws with nuts,
plates with crackers, springs, racks and rocker axles.

The camshaft is five-bearing, and is driven from the crankshaft through


distribution gears. The functions of the camshaft bearings are performed by 5
bushings, which are pressed into the bores of the block. The front bushing (on
the fan side), made of aluminum alloy, is equipped with a thrust collar that
keeps the camshaft from axial movement, the rest of the bushings are made of
special cast iron.

Pushers, rods and rocker arms - steel. The intake and exhaust valves are made
of heat resistant steel. The valves move in guide bushings that are pressed into
the cylinder head. Each valve closes under the action of 2 springs: external and
internal, acting on it through a plate and croutons.

Lubrication system
The D-245 diesel lubrication system is combined: some of the parts and
mechanisms are lubricated under pressure, and some are splash lubricated.
Under pressure pumped by the oil pump, the crankshaft and camshaft
bearings, the intermediate gear bushing, the connecting rod bearing of the
compressor crankshaft, the valve drive mechanism (rocker arm) and the
turbocharger shaft bearing are lubricated. Liners and pistons, piston pins and
rods, tappets and camshaft cams, as well as the fuel pump drive are lubricated
by oil spray.

High pressure fuel pump


The D-245 diesel injection pump is a block design, which consists of four pump
sections in one housing. It has a cam drive of plungers and spool dosing of
cyclic fuel supply. The high-pressure fuel pump delivers metered portions of
diesel fuel to the combustion chambers of the cylinders. The drive of the
camshaft of the injection pump is carried out from the crankshaft through the
distribution gears.

Cooling system
The cooling system on D-245 engines is of a closed type, with forced circulation
of coolant from a centrifugal pump. The water pump is driven by a V-belt from
the crankshaft pulley. The temperature of the coolant in the system is
controlled by a remote thermometer, the sensor of which is located in the
cylinder head. In the cover of the thermostat housing there is a sensor for the
emergency coolant temperature indicator light.

There are 2 options for installing a fan on a D-245 diesel engine: without a
spacer, or with a spacer. It is possible to install a fan with an electromagnetic or
viscous clutch to turn it off.

Starter, generator, compressor,


gear pump, clutch
The D-245 diesel engine starter consists of an electric starter with a rated
voltage of 24 or 12 V. The starter is a DC electric motor with mixed excitation,
with an electromagnetic relay and a drive mechanism.

To guarantee a confident start in the cold, all D-245 motors are equipped
with glow plugs with a rated voltage of 23 or 11 V. They are also equipped
with places for supplying and removing coolant from the heat preparation
system.

There is a starter lock after starting the power unit - it automatically turns off
at a crankshaft speed of 900-1000 rpm and does not turn on when the diesel
engine is running.

The D-245 engines use brushless alternators with built-in rectifying and voltage
regulating devices. The generators have leads for connecting to the circuits:
“+” - load and battery; "D" - starter blocking relay; "~" - tachometer. The
generator recharges the battery and supplies direct current to the consumers
of electricity that are on the vehicle. The generator is driven by a V-belt from
the crankshaft pulley.

On D-245 diesel engines, a single-cylinder air or 2-cylinder water-cooled


piston-type compressor is installed. The compressor pumps compressed air into
the pneumatic system of the brake drive and other consumers of the vehicle.
Air enters the compressor cylinder (s) from the engine inlet pipe.

To provide a system of hydroficated vehicle control, a gear pump is used on the


power unit. It is driven by the timing gears of the engine.

The clutch on the motors "D-245" is used friction, single-disk dry, permanently
closed type.

The official catalog - price list of the Minsk Motor Plant contains the following
serial D-245 engines, which are currently being produced to equip both
manufactured and discontinued tractors, trucks, buses:

Motors "D-245 E3" with "CommonRail" showed themselves well on the "MAZ"

demonstrating diesel fuel consumption of 17-18 liters per 100 km, at a speed

The new D-245 "tractor" engine costs around 180,000 rubles, "automobile" -
from 220,000 to 280,000 rubles, depending on the configuration. A used or
after a major overhaul, the D-245 engine can be purchased for 90-150
