6. Find the potential difference between the points A and B of the arrangement shown in Fig. 2.99.
(Ans. - 8 V)

7.Two identical capacitors of 12 pF each are connected in series across a battery of 50 V. How
much electrostatic energy is stored in the combination? If these were connected in parallel across
the same battery, how much energy will be stored in the combination now? Also find the charge
drawn from the battery in each case.
(i) A 900 pF capacitor is charged by a 100 V battery. Flow much electrostatic energy is stored
by the capacitor?
(ii) The capacitor is disconnected from the battery and connected to another 900 pF capacitor.
What is the electrostatic energy stored by the system?
(Hi) Where has the remainder of the energy gone?
8.Two capacitors of unknown capacitances C1 and C2 are connected first in series and then in
parallel across a battery of 100 V. If the energy stored in the two combinations is 0.045 J and 0.25
J respectively, determine the values of C1 and C2. Also calculate the charge on each capacitor in
parallel combination.
[CBSE D 15]
Solution. For series combination, we have
1 𝐶1 𝐶2 2
𝑈= 𝑉
2 𝐶1 + 𝐶2
1 𝐶 𝐶
∴ 0.045 = 2 𝐶 1+𝐶2 × (100)2 …(i)
1 2

For parallel combination, we have U = (C1+C2)

1
𝑈 = (𝐶1 + 𝐶2 )𝑉 2
2
1
∴0.25 = 2 (𝐶1 + 𝐶2 ) × (100)2

Or 𝐶1 + 𝐶2 = 0.5 × 10−4 … (𝑖𝑖)

1 𝐶 𝐶
2

1 2 2
From (i), 0.045 = 2 × 0.5×10 −4 × (100)

Or 𝐶1 𝐶2 = 0.045 × 10−8

Now (𝐶1 − 𝐶2 )2 = (𝐶1 + 𝐶2 )2 − 4𝐶1 𝐶2

(𝐶1 − 𝐶2 )2 = (𝐶1 + 𝐶2 )2 − 4𝐶1 𝐶2
= (0.25 − 0.180) × 10−8 = 0.07 × 10−8
∴ 𝐶1 − 𝐶2 = √0.07 × 10−4 = 026 × 10−4 ... (iii)
On solving (ii) and (iii), we get
q = 0.38 × 10-4 F and C2 = 0.12 × 10-4 F Charges on capacitors C1 and C2 in parallel
combination are :
Q1 = C1V = 0.38 × 10-4× 100 C = 0.38 × 10-2 C
Q2 = C2V =0.12 ×10-4× 100 C = 0.12 ×10-2 C.

inserted to fill completely the space between the plates of the two capacitors. How will the (i)
charge and (ii) potential difference betiveen the plates of the capacitors be affected after the
slabs are inserted?
10.A parallel plate capacitor, of capacitance 20 μF, is connected to a 100 V supply. After sometime
the battery is disconnected, and the space, between the plates of the capacitor is filled with a
dielectric, of dielectric constant 5. Calculate the energy stored in the capacitor (i) before (ii) after
the dielectric has been put in between its plates.
11.A slab of material of dielectric constant K has the same area as the plates of a parallel plate
capacitor but has a thickness 3d / 4, where d is the separation of the plates. How is the
capacitance changed when the slab is inserted between the plates?
