Learning Journal Unit-7 Introducation To Satistic

The document provides examples of calculating probabilities using the normal distribution. 1) It finds P(X > 120) = 0.0912 by calculating the z-score and looking up the probability. 2) It finds the value k such that P(X < k) = 0.98 by setting the z-score equal to the value for a 98% probability and solving for k, getting k = 130.81. 3) It finds the values that define the middle 50% of the distribution, which are x1 = 89.88 and x2 = 110.12 by setting z-scores equal to the value for 75% probability and solving the equations.

1.

Find P (X > 120)

Formula

z-score = ( x - μ ) / (σ)

where:

x = sample mean

μ = population mean

σ = population standard deviation

Step 2:

x = > 120

μ = 100

σ = 15

Step 3:

z-score = ( x - μ ) / (σ)

z-score = (120 - 100)/(15)

z-score = 1.33

P (x > 120) =

P (z > 1.33) = 1 - P (z < 1.33)

= 1 - 0.9088 = 0.0912

2. Find k such as P(X < k) = 0.98.

z-score = (x - μ) / (σ)

Since 98% of the values are less than k we are looking for a left tailed event, where the p-

value 0.98 (98%) is the probability of obtaining a result equal to or less than k.

 x = < k
μ = 100

σ = 15

p(X < k) = 98% = 0.98

The z score for p of 0.98 using the z-table (look for value closest to 0.98)

z = 2.05

Formula

z-score = (x - μ ) / (σ)

2.05 = (k - 120) / 15

k = (2.05 * 15) + 120

k = 130.81

3.

formula

z-score = ( x - μ ) / (σ)

 μ = 100

σ = 15

P (-z < Z < z) = 50%/100 = 0.50

P (-z < Z < z) = 0.50

P (z < z) - P (z < -z) = 0.50

P (z < z) - [1 - P (z < z)] = 0.50

2P (z < z) = 1 + 0.50

2P (z < z) = 1.50

P (z < z) = 1.50/2

P (z < z) = 0.75

The z score for p of 0.75 using the z-table (look for value closest to 0.75)
z = +0.67

where x1

z = -0.67

z = (x - μ ) / (σ)

-0.67 = (x - 100) / 15

x = (-0.67 * 15) + 100

x = 89.88

x2

z = 0.67

z = (x - μ ) / (σ)

0.67 = (x - 100) / 15

x = (0.67 * 15) + 100

x = 110.12

In summary

1. Find P (X > 120) = 0.0912

2. Find k such as P(X < k) = 0.98. Interpret your result.

k = 130.81

3. Find the two values where the middle 50% of the distribution of X lie.

x1 = 89.88

x2 = 110.12
