Bridge Course Syllabus for M.Sc. PHYSICS


Batch: Academic Year 22-23

1. Mechanics: Newton’s Laws. Keplers laws. Central forces, conservation of angular momentum. Moment of
inertia, radius of gyration, Theorems of MI, Definition and equation of SHM, formulae. Definitions of
Elasticity, Hooke’s law, Modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. Surface tension, surface energy, angle of
contact and interfacial surface tension. Definition of Viscosity and coefficient of viscosity.
2. Thermodynamics: Laws of thermodynamics. Entropy, Carnot’s theorem. Thermodynamic potentials. Maxwell’s
thermodynamic equations. Kinetic theory of gases- Maxwells speed distribution law. Average, Most probable
and rms velocities, Equipartition energy. Low temperature Physics: Joule-Thomson effect. Black body
radiation, Stefan’s law, Rayleigh Jeans law, Wien’s law, Planck’s radiation law.
3. Waves & Optics: What is wave - Electromagnetic wave - Longitudinal and Transverse waves. Light wave and
sound wave. Superposition of waves. Fourier’s theorem. Existence of light waves: Interference, Young's Double
Slit Experiment, Phase change on reflection, thin films, wedge shaped film and Newton’s rings. Definitions of
diffraction and Polarization. Circular and elliptical polarizations, Birefringence and Nicol prism.
4. Electricity and Magnetism: Charge, Electric field, Electric force, Gauss Law, Electric potential, dielectrics:
Charge storage in a capacitor. Polar and non polar dielectrics. Dielectric displacement, dielectric permittivity,
dielectric polarization. Magnetic field, magnetic field induction, magnetization, permeability and susceptibility.
Dia, para and ferro magnetic materials. Ampere’s law, Faraday’s laws. Lenz law. Maxwell’s equations. Finding
the expression for light velocity in vacuum.
5. Modern Physics: Frames of reference. Inertial and Non-inertial frames of reference. Galilean and Lorentz
transformations. Time dilation and length contraction. Reduced mass equation and Einstein’s energy- mass
equivalent equation E=MC2. The Bohr Model of a Hydrogen Atom. Vector atom model and seven quantum
numbers. Definitions and equations of Photoelectric effect, Compton effect. Wave nature of matter - De Broglie
Hypothesis. Phase velocity and group velocity. Heisenberg Uncertainty Principles. Schrodinger equation. X-
rays, Mosley’s law, Lasers, Molecular energies and Raman effect.
6. Electronics:
Networks: Kirchhoff’s laws, Thevenin’s theorem, Norton's Theorem, application to the analysis of DC
circuits. Semiconductor Devices: Band theory of solids, Types of semiconductors, Diode current equation,
I- V characteristics, Static and dynamic resistance of a diode, Bridge rectifier, Expression for ripple factor
and efficiency. Filters, Zener breakdown and Avalanche breakdown. Regulated power supplies- shunt
regulator using zener diode. Transistors: Type and configuration ,Methods of transistor biasing- voltage
divider bias, Fixing Operating point, drawing load line. Effect of temperature on operating point, Thermal
runway. Amplifier: Transistor amplifiers, two stage transistor RC coupled amplifier, mathematical
analysis, frequency response curve, half power frequencies bandwidth. Oscillators : The feed back
concept-positive and negative feed back. Mention the Barkhausen criteria.Types of oscillator - Hartley
oscillator.
