Lesson Exemplar Math Demo

This document provides a detailed lesson exemplar on finding the area of a circle for 5th grade mathematics students. It includes the objectives to understand area, volume, and temperature, as well as apply this knowledge to problems and real-life situations. The content focuses on finding the area of a given circle. The lesson plan outlines teacher and student activities, such as an introduction with prayer, checking attendance, presenting the topic, and working through an example problem to determine if an old manhole cover found would be suitable based on the diameter of the manhole.

topic.

Circle and Parts of a Circle

A circle is a collection of points

that are at a fixed distance from the (Students participate to
center of the circle. A circle is a the discussion actively)
closed geometric shape. We see
circles in everyday life such as a
wheel, pizzas, a circular ground,
etc. The measure of the space or
region enclosed inside the circle is
known as the area of the circle.

Parts of a Circle

Radius: The distance from the

center to a point on the boundary is
called the radius of a circle. It is
represented by the letter 'r' or 'R'.
Diameter: A line that passes
through the center and its

endpoints lie on the circle is called

the diameter of a circle. It is
represented by the letter 'd' or 'D'.
Circumference: The
circumference of the circle is equal
to the length of its boundary.

1. Please provide an object in

home that you consider is a circle.

Read the situation below and

answer the question the follows.

Problem:
A street sweeper was working on
her area when she noticed an open
manhole. For the safety of the
pedestrians, she knows that she
must find a cover for the manhole.
She Found an old cover in their
stock room that has a top surface
area of 3000sq.cm, if the diameter
of the manhole is 60cm, would the
old manhole cover be useful?

1. What did the Street Sweeper

notice?
2. Why did the Street Sweeper
cover the open manhole?
3. Would it be possible to cover the
open manhole using the object she
found in the stock room?

B. Development
What is the Area of Circle?
The area of a circle is the
amount of space enclosed within
the boundary of a circle. The region

within the boundary of the circle is

the area occupied by the circle. It
may also be referred to as the total
number of square units inside that
circle.

Area of Circle Formulas (Students participate to

The area of a circle can be the discussion actively)
calculated in intermediate steps
from the diameter, and the
circumference of a circle. From the
diameter and the circumference,
we can find the radius and then find
the area of a circle. But these
formulae provide the shortest
method to find the area of a circle.
Suppose a circle has a radius 'r'
then the area of circle = πr2 or
πd2/4 in square units, where π =
22/7 or 3.14, and d is the diameter.
Area of a circle, A = πr2 square
units

You are asked to know if the street

sweeper would be able to use the
cover that she found in their stock
room. To solve this, you have to
compare the area of the manhole
to the area of the cover.
(Students participate to
the discussion actively)
Let us find first the area of the
manhole by using this step-by-step

District of Rodriguez

procedure:
Step 1: Write the Formula.
Step 2: Substitute the given to the
formula.
Step 3: Multiply all the given.

Take note that the value of pi that

we are going to use is 3.14.
A=π × r × r
= 3.14 x 30 cm x 30 cm = 900
= 3.14 x 900
= 2826cm²
The open manhole is 2826 cm².

A. Engagement Let us consider the following (Students participate to

illustrations based on the area of
circle formula.

Another example of Teacher:

If the length of the radius of a circle
is 4 units. Calculate its area.

4 cm

Solution:

Radius(r) = 4 cm(given)
Using the formula for the circle's
area,
Area of a Circle = π x r x r
Put the values,
A = 3.14 x 4 x 4 = 16
= 3.14 × 16
= 50.27

Solution:

Radius(r) = 12 cm(given)
Using the formula for the circle's
area,
Area of a Circle = π x r x r
Put the values,
A = 3.14 x 12 x 12 = 144
= 3.14 x 144
= 452.16
Answer: The area of the circle is
452.16 squared unit
Solution:
