Network
● A Network is a set of node connect together by
communication link to sharing of resources and to
transmit information.
● Node: Computer, Printer, Scanner etc.
● Information: text, voice, picture, etc.

Goals of Networking
The main goals of networking are:

➢ Resource Sharing
➢ High Reliability
➢ Cost Reduction
➢ Improve Performance
➢ Communication Medium
Goals of Networking
● Resource Sharing
This is the main aim of networking. It means to make all
programs peripherals and data available to any one computer
on the network to all other computers in the network without
regard to the physical locations of them. Thus user at large
distances can share the resources or can see data of a computer
in the same way that a local user uses them. Another aspect of
resource sharing is load sharing. That is if required, a job can
be performed using various computers in network by
portioning it which reduces time consumption and load both
for a particular computer.
Goals of Networking
● High Reliability
A second goal is to provide high reliability by having alternative sources of supply. For example, all
files could be replicated on two or three machines, so if one of them is Unavailable, the other copies
could be available.
• Cost Reduction/ Saving Money

Another goal of networking is reduction of cost. Resource sharing automatically reduces cost and
hence money can be saved.
Goals of Networking
● Improve Performance
The fourth goal is to improve accessibility and the performance of the system. A system’s
performance can be improved by inserting one or more processors into it as its workload grows.
For example:
If the system is full, replacing it with a larger one at a large expense, it is better to add more
processors to it at less cost and less disruption to the user. This improves both accessibilities as well
as the performance of a system.
• Communication Medium
The fifth goal of the computer network offers a powerful communication medium. The different user
on the network can immediately identify a document that has been refreshed on a network.

● Transmission media (wired, wireless ).
● Network Operating System (NOS).
● Network Interface Card (NIC).

Applications of Networking
Some of the network applications in
different fields are the following.

3. Manufacturing. CAD, CAM etc.

1. Personal Area Networks
○ PANs(Personal Area
Networks): The devices
communication over the range
of a person.
○ Example: The wireless

network connection of the PC
and its peripherals devices.

2. Local Area Networks
○ LAN(Local Area Network): An own
private network which operates within
and nearby a single building such as
home, office or factory.
○ LANs are widely used to connect
personal computers and consumer
electronics to let them share resources
and exchange information
○ When LANs are used by companies,
we called them Enterprise Networks.

2. Local Area Networks (Cont.)

○ Wireless LAN: is used where too much
trouble to install cables.
○ In this system, every computer has a
radio modem and an antenna that uses
to communicate with other computers.
○ In most cases, each computer talks to a
device in the ceiling such as AP(Access
Point), Wireless Router, or Base
Station.

2. Local Area Networks (Cont.)

○ Wired LAN: is the transmission
technologies which are mostly use
copper wire or optical fiber as
media.
○ LANs are restricted in size: worst-
case transmission time is bounded
and known in advance.
○ Wired LAN is built from point-to-
point links, each computer speaks • To built large LANs: switches
the ethernet protocol and connects can be plugged into each other
to a Switch or Router. using their ports.

3. Wide Area Networks

○ WAN: spans a large geographical area
often a county or continent.
○ WANs are often established with
leased telecommunication
circuits(Leased Line).
○ WANs are used to connect LANs and
other types of networks together so that
users and computers in one location
can communicate with users and
computers in other locations.

4. Metropolitan Area Networks

○ MAN: is a large network which
usually spans a city or a large
campus.
○ Cable television is not the only
MAN, though. Recent
developments in high-speed
wireless Internet access have
resulted in another MAN, which
is popularly known as WiMAX.

5. Internet
○ A collection of interconnected
networks is called an
Internetwork or Internet.
○ The Internet uses ISP
networks to connect enterprise
networks, home networks and
many other networks.
