MATHEMATICAL METHODS (UNIT 3)

SAC: APPLICATION TASK


SAC NOTIFICATION & INFORMATION

DATES:
This SAC will appear as events on your Compass schedule and will be set up as a Learning Task, starting 1 st June to 8th
June.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
 Number of periods: 4
 Allowed materials: CAS calculator and one bound reference of notes

MARKS:
This task contributes 50 of the 50 marks for School Assessed Coursework in Unit 3.
 Outcome 1: 15 marks
 Outcome 2: 20 marks
 Outcome 3: 15 marks

STRUCTURE OF SAC:
This application task is comprised of three consecutive components
 Component 1: Session 1 Tuesday 1st June
 Component 2: Session 2 Thursday 3rd June
 Component 3: Session 3 Friday 4th June
 Component 3: Session 4 Tuesday 8th June

INSTRUCTIONS:
 All work will be completed on questions sheets provided
 Your SAC questions and answers sheets, bound reference and CAS calculator will be collected after every
session
 No new material is permitted to be brought into the SAC after the first session.
Any material found to be brought in will be in violation of the SAC policy and procedures and will be
brought to your Well Being Leader’s immediate attention
 A VCAA formula sheet will be provided to you
 All working out must be clear and must be shown for each question

MODERATION AND MARKING:


The marks you receive on this SAC are an indication of progress only as school assessment is subject to statistical
moderation by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority against performance in externally assessed
examinations.
OUTCOMES:
This SAC will cover the following outcomes
Outcome 1
Define and explain key concepts as specified in the content from the areas of study, and apply a range of
related mathematical routines and procedures.

Outcome 2
Apply mathematical processes in non-routine contexts, including situations requiring problem-solving,
modelling or investigative techniques or approaches, and analyse and discuss these applications of
mathematics.

Outcome 3
Select and appropriately use numerical, graphical, symbolic and statistical functionalities of technology to
develop mathematical ideas, produce results and carry out analysis in situations requiring problem-
solving, modelling or investigative techniques or approaches.

THE FOLLOWING KEY KNOWLEDGE IS THE FOCUS OF THIS TASK:


 Graphs and identification of key features of graphs of the following functions:
o Power functions, 𝑦 = 𝑥 𝑛 , 𝑛 ∈ 𝑄
o exponential functions, y = ax, a ∈ R+, in particular y = ex, and logarithmic functions, y = loge(x)

and y = log10(x)

 graphs of polynomial functions


 review of algebra of polynomials, equating coefficients and solution of polynomial equations with real
coefficients of degree n having up to n real solutions
 use of simple functional relations
 composition of functions, where f composition g is defined by f (g(x)), given rg ⊆ df (the notation f ° g
may be used, but is not required)
 solution of equations of the form f (x) = g(x) over a specified interval, where f and g are functions of the
type specified in the ‘Functions and graphs’ area of study, by graphical, numerical and algebraic methods,
as applicable
 Solution of literal equations and general solution of equations involving a single parameter
 The concepts of domain, maximal domain and range
 Domain and range requirements for specification of graphs of functions and relations, when
using technology
 derivatives of xn, for n ∈ Q, ex
f (x)
 derivatives of f (x) ± g(x), f (x) × g(x), , and f (g (x)) where f and g are polynomial functions,
g(x)
exponential or power functions and transformations or simple combinations of these functions
 application of differentiation to graph sketching and identification of key features of graphs,
identification of intervals over which a function is constant, stationary, strictly increasing or strictly
decreasing, identification of the maximum rate of increase or decrease in a given application context
(consideration of the second derivative is not required), identification of local maximum/minimum
values over an interval and application to solving problems, and identification of interval endpoint
maximum and minimum values
 The selection of an appropriate functionality of technology in a variety of mathematical contexts
