Chapter 1 Overview of Software Installation

1.1 Introduction to Software Installation

Software installation refers to software loading, installation, debugging, remote

maintenance system configuration and software upgrade, and so on. In this part, it
mainly describes the UMG8900 software installation procedures, operations, notes and
common faults during installation.

After hardware installation and the universal media gateway (UMG8900) debugging,
you need to install software and perform some configurations. The software to be
installed consists of the UMG8900 software and the local maintenance terminal (LMT)
software.

The UMG8900 software includes the UMG8900 management and the board service,
which are called background administration module (BAM) altogether. BAM is stored in
the built-in operation and maintenance unit (OMU) hard disk. Besides, the board
service software is also stored in the Flash of boards, which can be updated by loading
the latest version from the BAM after the software in the BAM is updated.

The UMG8900 provides an embedded BAM operating on the OMU. It also provides
external management interfaces and uses a real-time distributed operating system to
improve service process ability and response speed.

The UMG8900 management implements the management and maintenance of the

UMG8900. It achieves such functions as alarm management, performance
management, log management, fault management, data configuration and operation
and maintenance. In addition, it provides the interfaces for connection to the network
management (NM), LMT client system, file transfer protocol (FTP) and Telnet.

The board service software can, in cooperation with other boards, achieve the relevant
service functions and maintenance management. The board service software is
composed of service application, extended BootROM, partial logic and lower layer
support, and patch software. The service application software is used to communicate
with the UMG8900 management software and the service processing of the board.
Combination of the extended BootROM and the service application software can
implement the software upgrade through erasable Flash of hardware. Based on
different boards, the partial logic and lower layer support software can achieve the
relevant lower layer applications and the hardware initialization. The patch software is
mainly used to enhance the features of the board service software and fix its bugs.

For the UMG8900 management software and the board service software stored in the
BAM, their loading and upgrade can be completed through the FTP. For the board
service software stored in the Flash, it can be loaded and upgraded either through the
internal bus from the BAM, or through the FTP from the external FTP server.

1.2 Installing Software

Before delivery, the UMG8900 is usually preloaded with the lower layer support
software and the hardware logic software. In practice, software installation and upgrade
are accomplished according to the actual networking application and the varied
software version.

Except the lower layer support software on the board, other software of the UMG8900
needs to be loaded or installed additionally. The software installation process is shown
in Figure 1-1.

1.3 Installing LMT Software

The LMT software and UMG8900 adopts the client/server architecture. The LMT acts
as the client software and focuses on data configuration, maintenance and device
management.

Since the UMG8900 software needs to connect with the UMG8900 through the LMT
system to perform some settings (adding the hardware information and configuring the
boot mode of the board) while loading, you must install the LMT client software first.

As the LMT system is designed on the basis of a standard Windows platform, and it
provides a popular graphical installation interface and a detailed installation instruction.
After installation, you need to perform a simple configuration before connecting it to the
UMG8900, such as adding office ID, setting IP address information related to the office
ID.

Note:
To implement the connection between the LMT and the UMG8900, the IP address of a
PC installed with the LMT can ping the IP address of the OMC interface of the
UMG8900 successfully.

After the LMT system installation of the UMG8900 starts up, its initial interface is shown
in Figure 1-2.

The UMG8900 provides an international feature. During the initial LMT installation, you
need to select a language environment. Both Chinese and English are provided in the
current version.

1.4 Manual Loading OMU Software

Before the UMG8900 delivery, the software is already installed in the OMU, including
the UMG8900 management software, service board software and some configuration
files. That is to say, the whole BAM installation is completed.

In general, the OMU and service boards can start up normally when powered on. But,
sometimes the OMU cannot start up due to some reasons. This chapter introduces
manual loading procedure of the OMU software. From this chapter you can learn how
to load the OMU software and install the BAM, which are essential for the
interconnection between the LMT client software and the UMG8900.

About the introduction of manual loading OMU software, please refer to Chapter 3
“Loading OMU Software Manually”.

1.5 Installing Host Software

Based on different software, the UMG8900 software installation includes the BAM
software and the board service software loadings.
z You can load the BAM software locally or remotely through the FTP provided by
the UMG8900.
z Using the LOD TOBP and LOD TOBT commands, you can load all board service
software specified by the UMG8900. The load results are written to the Flash of
boards.
Before loading, you need to install and configure a loading server; and to make sure
that your software version is correct and the software to be loaded is available.

The procedure of the local loading is the same as that of the remote loading.

For more information about the procedure for loading software, refer to Chapter 4
“Installing Host Software”. The board service software loading is mainly introduced in
this chapter.

the system.

2.4 Unloading Software

To upgrade the LMT system, you must unload the old one first. Since the system
provides an easy unloading operation, the following parts describe data backup and
some notes.

The LMT system provides various operation and maintenance functions, such as
performance management, service tracing, call and interface tracing, and
human-machine language (MML) command recording. During the system configuring
and running, a large number of logs and data are recorded. In case of data loss, you
need to back up them before unloading the LMT software.

Before unloading the software, close all the running programs to avoid failure or
incompetence of the unloading.

(VxxxRxxx refers to the actual version number), such as alarm information, debugging
log, performance statistics and the history records. You can copy them to the specified
directories. For the directories where the history data are stored, see Chapter 8
“Introduction to File System Directory”.

Step Description

1 Check if the backup data are correct, and then select [Start\Program\Huawei

2 There are three options: “Modify”, “Repair” and “Remove”. To unload the
software system, click “Remove”, and then click <Next>.

It is worthy of mention that when cancel the old LMT system, restart the machine first
before install the new one if see a prompt to restart. The LMT may not be able to work
properly if restart the machine until after installing the new LMT.

This is because when cancel the old LMT system, part of the database file (*. DLL) is
being used and cannot be canceled. Windows will record these files and cancel them
upon the restart. If reinstall a new LMT system without restarting the machine, Windows
will also cancel relevant files at the next restart, which are system files of the newly
installed LMT, and thus make LMT fail to work.

3.2 OMU Introduction

The OMU is targeted for management and maintenance on the UMG8900. It

accommodates interfaces for connecting the LMT system and the iManager network
management system. Therefore, the OMU is the core management unit of the
UMG8900.

The premise of software installation of the UMG8900 is the normal boot of the OMU.
Failure of the OMU startup makes it impossible for other boards start up and software
upgrade.

The higher-layer software of the OMU includes:

z momu.vfs: the name of the UMG8900 software file
z momu_hddrv.rbf: the name of the logic software file in the hard disk
z momu_ebootrom.bin: the name of the extended BootROM software file
z momu_VxWorks_l: the name of the lower-layer operating system map file
First confirm the above software files are completed and correct, then establish
installation environment and make other preparations.

3.3 Making Preparations

To manually load the OMU software, do the following preparations:

z Install the LMT system to the local computer.
z Copy all files and sub-directories under the BAM directory into the same directory
of the local PC (which is C:\BAM in general). In this case, under the directory of the
local PC store the configuration files of all versions and the target files to be
loaded.
z Modify the IP address in mml.txt file in the directory C:\BAM of the local PC, and
then load OMU manually to assign this IP address to the network port of the NET.
You must modify it manually because MML command functions are not available
before the OMU startup.
z Modify the IP address in the mml.txt file with the following command:
ADD IPADDR : BT=OMU, BN=0, IFT=ETH, IFN=0, IPADDR="10.110.86.253",
MASK="255.255.255.0"

The IP address is that of the maintenance network interface (OMC interface) on the
NET board and serves as the IP address the LMT client acesses afer the OMU startup.
z Copy the filelist.txt and momu_vxWorks_l files accompanying with version release
to the same-level directory as the BAM. (In the presence of C:\BAM, the files shall
be saved into C:\).
z When manual loading BAM is needed, connect the debug network interface on the
OMU with the network interface in the PC through crossover network cables.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

3-2
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 3 Loading OMU Software Manually

z After loading BAM software, use crossover network cables to connect the OMC
interface on the NET board to the network interface of the PC. Use
straight-through network cables if the network interface of the UMG8900 connects
with the PC through a HUB or LAN. Then start the LMT.
z Install an FTP server in the PC and configure the server. Copy all files in the BAM
directory to the root directory (usually in C:\BAM) of the FTP server, and then set
user name and password. For example, username is “bam” and password is
“bam”. For more information, refer to 4.2.3 “Setting FTP Server” in this manual.
z Connect the debug serial port COM0 on the OMU with the serial port of the PC
through the serial port cables, start the hyper terminal of the PC, and then you can
view debug information.

3.4 Manual Loading Procedures

The procedure for loading the OMU software is described as follows:

During the automatic loading process, related files are written into the hard disks of the
OMU. The hard disks are formatted, and then part of the configuration files in the BAM
directory of the PC are loaded to them according to description in the file filelist.txt.
However, some files are not loaded yet. Execute the LOD TOBAM command to load all
the configuration files and destination files needed to the OMU.

3.4.5 Installing Host Software on the OMU

After the OMU starts up, connect the LMT client to the UMG8900. To upload the board
software to the hard disk, set the path for the FTP server to the directory C:\BAM first.

Enter the following command in the MML window:

LOD TOBAM: VT="MS", SIP="10.10.86.101", UID="bam", PWD="bam";

“10.10.86.101” is the IP address of the PC serving as the FTP server.

Note:
When the LMT is connected to the OMU, the prompt appears to ask for downloading
configuration files. In this case, click <Cancel>.
The LOD TOBAM command is to load all software and configuration files to the hard
disk on the OMU board. Therefore the loading may take over ten minutes. So
sometimes the prompt “connection timeout” appears.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

3-7
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 3 Loading OMU Software Manually

To avoid timeout prompt, you need to set the timeout time to 600 seconds at the menu
[System/System Setting/Time Setting/MML Overtime Configuration (20–600S)], and
set the shake hand interval as 180 seconds in the [Shake Hand Interval Time (60–
180S)] text box.

However, timeout prompt may still appear after 600 seconds due to the poor network
quality. In this case, pay attention to the information about file transfer printed by the
FTP server. If the information indicating successful file transfer is not printed in several
minutes, it proves files are already successfully transferred and the next operation can
be done.

3.4.6 Loading Software to the Slave OMU

If the OMU adopts the master/slave mode, you need to synchronize the software to the
slave OMU by loading them from the master OMU.

I. Setting the Starting Mode of the OMU as LOAD

Execute the SET BRDSTART command on the LMT to set the starting mode of the
OMU as LOAD.
SET BRDSTART: MOD=LOAD;

II. Starting the Slave OMU

Insert the slave OMU board into the slot. It is powered on automatically and starts up.
You do not need to plug the serial port cable and debugging network cable at this time.

III. Sychronizing Software on the Master and Slave OMU

Execute the SYC BAMFILE command on the LMT to load the configuration files and
target files of the master OMU to the hard disk of the slave OMU.

Note:
As all files need to be loaded, the execution of the SYC BAMFILE command lasts for 2
or 3 minutes. The result is displayed after the synchronization. If any file fails to be
loaded, execute the command again.

IV. Resetting the Slave OMU

The file synchronization succeeds after the SYC BAMFILE command finishes
execution.

Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

4.1 Overview of Installing Host Software

The UMG8900 host software consists of device management and board service
systems. The device management software can implement the following functions:
z device management
z maintenance
z performance management
z troubleshooting
z debugging
For installation of the device management software, refer to Chapter 2 “Installing LMT
Software”. The board service software can implement such functions as voice
transcoding, data communication and signaling protocol processing. This chapter
describes how to install the board service software.

Different types of board software have different configurations. The software

component configuration table (vercfg_mbl.ini file) lists the functions and component
configuration for each type of board software. For higher layer software, see section 8.4
“Introduction to Higher Layer Software of Board” in this manual.

As the board software of the UMG8900 is stored in the master OMU board, and its
installation is also implemented under the control of the master OMU loading module,
you can only load the master OMU board manually. To implement automatic loading of
other boards, you have to ensure the master OMU works normally. For details about
loading the OMU manually, see Chapter 3 “Loading OMU Software Manually”.

This chapter introduces automatic loading of boards and the corresponding

configurations during loading. The installation process is shown in Figure 4-1.

4.1.1 Basic Concepts

Before the software installation, you need to explain several common concepts at first,
so that you learn the whole software installation well. The basic concepts include:

I. Basic Input Output System

Basic input output system (BIOS), a concept of computer system, is a functional

module between hardware and higher layer software. As the most fundamental system
and the lowest layer software, BIOS separates the hardware and its higher layer
software. This feature makes subscribers to easy use. BIOS system includes hardware
initialization and hardware basic drivers.

The UMG8900 does not define BIOS strictly. According to the functions provided by
BIOS, basic BootROM, extended BootROM, lower layer application software of various
boards stored in Flash are together called BIOS.

II. BootROM

BootROM belongs to the main boot area of the system. The board system, at startup,
can implement hardware driver loading, hardware initialization, the boot of the
operating system and higher layer software through booting different application
software.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-2
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

BootROM is usually classified into basic BootROM and extended BootROM. Since the
basic BootROM has been burned into the system before delivery, it cannot be updated.
While the extended BootROM adopts an erasable storage device, new software can be
written into it to achieve the software upgrade.

At startup, the system boots from the basic BootROM first and performs hardware
initializing, and then it will determine whether to start from the basic BootROM or the
extended one, which depends on if the software has been upgraded. If upgraded, the
system will start up from the extended BootROM. You can achieve a higher
performance of the hardware without replacing it but through the upgrading of the
extended BootROM software.

III. Service software

Service software usually refers to higher layer software. It provides service support in
cooperation with board hardware.

Service software belongs to the higher layer application of the system based on its
functions and applications. It implements the board service processing. Besides, it can
implement the maintenance and management of the system in combination with main
control board and other service boards.

IV. Flash

Flash, as a kind of storage medium, is used to store applications and the extended
BootROM. Since Flash has an erasable feature, you can update the extended
BootROM and applications in it to upgrade the software without replacing the board, so
as to implement the maintenance and management of the device.

4.1.2 Loading Types

Loading means that the programs and data or various boards are transferred to
different boards and written to the corresponding memories so as to ensure the normal
operation of boards. There are two loading types:

I. Power-on Loading

The power-on loading means that after the board is powered on, the system will load
the required software components from the BAM of the master OMU and start the
board. You can obtain the power-on loading functions by combining the BootROM with
the master OMU loading management. Specific working principle is described as
follows:
z The BootROM responses for initializing the system, reads service software
components and boots the board.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-3
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

z After the board is powered-on or reset the BootROM runs and boots the board.
z The system begins the service processing.
Power-on loading is used for the cold boot of the board. Generally, it is used for the first
installation of the device.

II. Online loading

Online loading means that the system loads the software components dynamically
without interrupting services.

Online loading is a process that upgrades the software in Flash through the command
on MML command line without services interruption. Using the loading command, you
can specify whether the software is activated through the command parameters (If the
software is activated, the system may interrupt the services and reset the board).

You can implement online loading through front administration module (FAM) loading
management together with the master OMU software loading management. The
master OMU is responsible for the receiving and issuing of commands. The processes
are shown below:
z First the data are controlled and transferred between the master OMU and the
board.
z Then the data are written to the Flash.
z Finally the data will be activated as required.
All of the software components to be loaded are stored in the BAM of OMU.

There are two kinds of data source for online loading: one is the software provided by
the external FTP Server, the other is the software provided by the BAM of OMU, and it
can be specified by command parameters.

Online loading is used for version upgrade and patch loading.

4.1.3 Loading Modes

After the extended BootROM of a board starts up, it applies for the device state to the
master OMU. The loading mode of the board is informed when the state of the master
OMU is returned. It indicates the board shall load software from the BAM of the OMU or
from its Flash. There are three modes for board loading.
z Flash: When a board is powered on, the board does not compare its software with
that of the hard disk of OMU. The board loads the software in its Flash directly and
then starts up. This loading mode enables the fastest starting up and therefore is
recommended when a system is running.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

z CONSULT: When a board is powered on, the board reports its software versions to
the OMU. If any software component is not consistent with that of the OMU saved,
the software of the board needs to be updated.
z LOAD: When the board is powered on, version comparison is not performed. All
software needs to be updated. That is to download software from the OMU to the
board Flash and then reboot the board. This mode is the slowest in starting up and
therefore is not recommended when a system is running.
For more information about MML commands, see MML online help of the LMT system.
You can view the board loading mode through the LST BRDSTART command.

Note:
The parameter "Boot sign” for the SET BRDSTART command is mandatory. Others
are optional. You can combine them according to actual situations.

4.1.4 Configuring Software System

The software system configuration refers to the software configurations of all boards in
the UMG8900. The configurations are described in the version configuration
information table that records the software configurations of various types of service
boards. The software of all boards must be configured in this table.

The configuration information is recorded in the vercfg_mbl.ini file under the directory
c:/bam/config/ on the OMU.

Caution:

The configuration file of the version information is a significant higher-layer software

configuration file in the system; don’t modify it at will. Any modification to it may cause
the software loading failures or device unavailability.

The configuration file of version information is released together with the software
version of the OMU. All board software configured in this table is described in the
matching table of the version.

Note:
Using the LOD TOBAM command, you can load the configuration file of version to the
master OMU.

4.2 Establishing Installation Environment

4.2.1 Introduction to Installation Environment

The software installation environment is on the basis of complete board hardware. The
following introduces the environment for the installation of the UMG8900 host software,
excluding the LMT software.

I. Environment for Automatic Software Installation

This environment indicates that the software installation of the OMU is completed and
the OMU can start up normally. The software systems such as extended BootROM of
the OMU, service board and the OMU backup software were loaded, or not loaded to
the Flash. This environment is used for the power-on loading of boards.

The conditions for the OMU completing its own software installation and starting up go
as follows:
z Higher layer software on the OMU was loaded to its Flash.
z Hard disk logic on the OMU was loaded to its Flash.
z The directory of the OMU hard disk was correctly created, and the necessary files
(including the bam directory and all sub-directories and files under the directory)
were correctly uploaded to the specified directory on the hard disk.
z All software required by the host system was uploaded to the directory
c:\bam\bin\new on the OMU hard disk.
z The basic BootROM of various service boards match those on the OMU system.
In addition, the extended BootROM on the OMU can either be written to the Flash or
not.

After all the above preparations are completed, you only need to perform some settings
of the command lines, and then you can power-on and start the device.

II. Environment for Manual Software Installation

This environment means that the software system is not loaded correctly to the OMU
and the OMU cannot start up. Manual loading is needed in this case.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-6
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

If any step described in the installation environment is not followed, the automatic
software installation can not be implemented, so you must install the software manually.

4.2.2 Loading Preparations

The following preparations need to be done for power-on loading.

Procedure Description

1 Check if hardware installation completes. Especially check physical

connections between some major boards and check if they pass the
power-on self-test.

2 Check the basic startup function of the board. This function is to

initialize and start up the system through the basic BootROM on the
board. It has passed the strict testing before delivery. This function is
already provided unless the hardware is damaged.
Be sure that all boards except OMU, the basic BootROM software,
lower-layer hardware logic and drivers must be loaded correctly.
Otherwise, the board cannot provide services.
If the OMU cannot start up normally, you need to load the software
manually for OMU startup.

3 Check if the board hardware installation completes. Check the

software and hardware versions against the auxiliary table of version
to see if all board components are configured correctly. The master
OMU loads software to boards according to the configuration
information table of host software components (also called version
configuration information table).
Be sure that the configuration information table of host software
components was written to the OMU hard disk before delivery. It is
unnecessary to modify it unless the configuration of board software
components needs to be changed.

4 Check if all software components essential to boards were loaded to

the OMU hard disk. The host software was written to the OMU hard
disk before the OMU delivery. It is necessary to update the relevant
software on the OMU hard disk if you change the software versions
for some reasons.

5 Check if boards are in the right positions as the panel management

interface indicates. If not, the board registration may fail.

6 For the convenience of controlling the OMU, connect a PC (or a

portable computer) to the COM0 interface on the OMU and make
sure they are well connected (This step is optional, and only used for
loading software to the OMU manually).

7 A frame No. is based on octet Dial in-line Package Switch (DIP

switch) of the second half conversion card in back of frame. The
configured frame No. must be consistent with that set by the DIP
switch. Otherwise, the frame cannot load software and data. For
more information about DIP switch setting, refer to chapter 2
“Cabinet and Frames” of HUAWEI UMG8900 Hardware Description
Manual.

4.2.3 Setting FTP Server

The loading server provides all software to the UMG8900 system.

Installing loading server is to configure the FTP server on the PC. You can use the FTP
tool to implement the settings of the FTP server. Besides, you need to set the user
name, password and service directory of the server, and to place the files necessary for
the installation environment in the directory C:\BAM of FTP. The BAM directory is
already determined when version is released and cannot be modified at will. The work
directory of the FTP server is set as the BAM directory.

Caution:

The Windows98 has no limitation for the FTP server. The Windows2000, NT and XP
require the authentication. The user name and password of the FTP server entered
must be identified by the system; otherwise the connection will be failure.

For Windows XP, if its built-in firewall is started, UMG8900 cannot communicate with
the FTP server of the PC so that loading files will fail. As shown in Figure 4-2, you need
to click the [Advanced] tab in the [Local Area Connection Properties] dialog box and
then clear the check box “Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing
access to this computer from the Internet”.

4.2.4 Setting Hyper Terminal

The control operation of the OMU can be implemented through its serial port. It is
recommended to use the hyper terminal tool provided by the Windows2000 to connect
to the serial port (COM0) through serial cables to implement control operation of the
OMU.

The following parameter standards should be followed when configuring the hyper
terminal of Windows:

4.2.5 MML Batch Processing File

I. Uploading MML Batch Processing File

MML batch processing file is a text file used to record MML command lines. The file is
stored in the directory c:/bam in the OMU hard disk, and its name is mml.txt. Before
enabling the OMU, you must store the mml.txt in the directory c:/bam on the FTP server
and then upload the file to the OMU hard disk. So that MML batch process file becomes
effective when the OMU starts up. For configuration of FTP, refer to “0

Setting FTP Server”.

When the OMU starts up, MML commands in the mml.txt file are executed orderly.

The ADD IPADDR command must be configured in the mml.txt file. The command is
used to configure the IP address of the BAM maintenance port (the OMC interface on
the NET board) on the OMU. After the OMU starts and becomes the master board, you
need to use the IP address to log in to the BAM of the OMU through the MML command
line or the LMT graphical terminal.

Note:
The default address configured for this command is 129.1.1.1. Before uploading the
mml.txt file to the OMU, you can modify the IP address according to your desire.

After the OMU starts up, using the ADD IPADDR command, you can modify the IP
address which is configured by the same command in LMT. To enable the address to
take effect, you need to execute the command SAVE CFG. Meanwhile, the new
modification is recorded to the file mml.txt.

The basic format of the file mml.txt is as follows:

//This command is used to configure an IP address of the maintenance port (the
//OMC interface on the NET board) on the master OMU. Modify the address and
//mask of this command according to actual situation.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-17
Installation Manual - Software Installation

ADD IPADDR: BT=OMU, BN=0, IFT=ETH, IFN=0, IPADDR="10.110.86.224",

MASK="255.255.255.0";

Note:
The contents after “//” in the above mml.txt file are explanations for the batch
processing file and are not part of the command.

II. Operating Method if Forgetting to Modify MML Batch Processing File

In many cases, the user has uploaded MML batch processing file to the hard disk of the
OMU, but forgot to modify the IP address in MML batch processing file configured by
the command ADD IPADDR. Then the following methods can be adopted:
1) Log in to the hyper terminal through serial port (Please use the default super user
name and password) and modify the IP address of the OMU interface by the
command MOD OMCIP. For example, modify the IP address of the OMU interface
“129.1.1.1” to be “10.110.86.124” and subnet mask to be “255.255.255.0”:
MOD OMCIP: OLDIP="129.1.1.1", NEWIP="10.110.86.224", NewMask="255.255.0.0";
2) Because the IP address configured by the command ADD IPADDR in MML batch
processing file is “129.1.1.1” by default, you only need to configure the IP address
of the terminal PC in the same network segment with the default IP address. For
example, you can configure the IP address of the PC as “129.1.1.5”.
3) Log in to the hyper terminal through serial port (by default, the super user name is
“admin” and password is “9061mgw”), and delete and add the IP address of the
OMU interface by the commands RMV IPADDR and ADD IPADDR separately.
//In the debugging mode, type “DBG” and enter the MML command line:
DBG
//Input your user name and password:
lgi:op=”user name”, pwd=”password”
//Delete the IP address of the OMU interface:
RMV IPADDR: BT=OMU, BN=0, IFT=ETH, IFN=0, IPADDR="129.1.1.1";
//Add the IP address of the OMU interface:
ADD IPADDR: BT=OMU, BN=0, IFT=ETH, IFN=0, IPADDR="10.110.86.224",
MASK="255.255.255.0";
//Exit the MML command line:
LGO;
//Exit the debugging mode:
DBG

4.3 Installing Software

Four cases may be involved in the software installation.

z All required software is loaded to the OMU, and you just need to perform the
power-on loading operation.
z The OMU can start up normally, but its service software needs to be upgraded. So
you need to reload it manually.
z You need to load board software in multi-frame cascading.
z You need to load tone files.
Before delivery, the device management software and board service software on the
BAM of the OMU were loaded. Generally, the normal software loading refers to the
power-on loading.

If the device management software and board service software on the BAM of the OMU
need to be upgraded, or some data need to be modified, you have to load them to the
OMU manually. For more information about the software installation in the case of
upgrading, refer to Chapter 6 “Upgrading Host Software”.

The following part describes the process of the software installation mentioned above.

4.3.1 Installing Automatically

After setting the software installation environment, you can start the software
installation. In the automatic installation environment, you only need to configure the
parameters that define how service boards obtain their software and start up.

Automatic installation procedures of board software are shown in Figure 4-14.

Operation steps are as follows:

Step Description

1 Power-on the main control frame of the UMG8900 (frame 1) first and then
start the master OMU. The master OMU must work in normal state.
In the multi-frame networking, the normal starting order is: the master OMU
in the main control frame starts up successfully Æ other boards in the main
control frame start up successfully Æ the MPU in the central switching
frame starts up successfully Æ other boards in the central switching frame
start up successfully Æ MPU in other frames start up successfully Æ
service boards in other frames start up successfully.

2 Follow the steps described in section 4.2.5 MML Batch Processing File.
Modify the IP address configured through the ADD IPADDR command in
the MML batch processing file and load it on the hard disk of the OMU.
Skip this step if the IP address has been modified to the correct one when
the MML batch processing file is loaded on the OMU.

3 Establish the connection between the LMT system and the UMG8900.
Before installing the LMT system, you have set up the connection between
them. So you only need to configure the UMG8900 through MML
commands of the LMT system

4 Use the LOD TOBAM command to upload all host software or required
software to the OMU. See section 3.4.5 “Installing All Software on the
OMU” for details.
As all software has been uploaded on the BAM of the OMU before the
UMG8900 delivery, generally you can skip this step.

5 Execute the SYC BAMFILE command to load the configuration files and
destination files of the master OMU to the hard disk of the slave OMU.

6 Configure the frame through the ADD FRM command and add boards to
the frame using the ADD BRD command.

7 Set a board loading mode. Using the SET BRDSTART command, you can
set LOAD as the startup mode of service boards and the slave OMU. In
such a mode, the board is forced to update its software from the master
OMU.
SET BRDSTART: MOD=LOAD;
Note:
It is recommended to adopt the default settings. Using the LST
BRDSTART command, you can view the board startup mode.
8 After the successful execution of the SET BRDSTART command, reset the
board through the RST BRD command. The board starts up normally,
indicating the services are loaded successfully. Using the LST BRD
command, you can see if the board starts up normally. And then using the
SET BRDSTART command, you can set the loading mode as Flash for all
boards.
SET BRDSTART: MOD=FLASH;
Note:
You can deliver commands by entering the command either in the MML

command line or in the graphical LMT.
9 Execute the SAVE CFG command to save the configuration data.

10 After software installation, execute the DSP SWVER command to display

the following information:
z Version information of the UMG8900 software
z All device software versions saved in the OMU hard disk
z All software versions currently running on boards
z All currently-running software versions on board Flash
Using the CHK VERSION command, you can check:
z The consistency between the running software versions and standard
versions
z The consistency between the software versions in the Flash and
standard versions
z The consistency between the software versions in the OMU hard disk
and standard versions. The check results are listed by board name

4.3.2 Updating BAM

The BAM update means that the software in the OMU hard disk needs to be upgraded.
Since the board software is also stored in the OMU hard disk, their update belongs to
the BAM update as well.

In this case, if the OMU can start up normally, it provides automatic loading and the FTP
function. To reload the BAM software of the OMU, you need to power-on the OMU to
load them.

Operation steps are as follows:

Step Description

1 Power-on No.1 main control frame of the UMG8900 first and then start up the
master OMU. The master OMU works normally.

2 Connect the LMT with the UMG8900. You can configure the UMG8900
through MML commands of the LMT system.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-21
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

Step Description

3 Use the LOD TOBAM command to upload all the host software or the
required software to the OMU hard disk. During the execution, the system
connects to the specified FTP server and obtains the software from the server
according to the version configuration table. Then the system writes the
software to the hard disk of the OMU.
For example, execute the following command to upload the master CPU
software of the MPU to the OMU hard disk. The master CPU software is
named “mppu.vfs” and the IP address of the FTP server is 10.110.33.111.
LOD TOBAM:VT= MS, BT = MPU, FN = ”mppu.vfs”, SIP = ”10.110.33.111”,
UID = ”XXXX”, PWD = ”YYYY”;
After the execution, the mppu.vfs software is uploaded to the hard disk of the
master OMU.

4 If the software to be uploaded is a package compressed by packer.exe,

execute the LOD PACK command to upload the specified package to the
OMU hard disk. Then unpack it to obtain the software files. The LOD TOBAM
command does not support package uploading.

5 If the OMU board cannot start up normally, you need to load the OMU
software manually. See Chapter 3 ”Loading OMU Software Manually” for
details.

4.3.3 Loading Multi-Frame Board Software

Before loading board software in a multi-frame structure, make sure that all software
have been loaded to the OMU hard disk.

Steps for loading multi-frame board software are as follows:

Step Description

1 Follow step 7 in section 4.3.1 Installing Automatically to load software on

multiple boards in different frames at one time. Execute the SET BRDSTART
command without specifying the frame No. and board No., you can load
software on boards in all frames.
SET BRDSTART: MOD=LOAD;
2 To load software on boards in one frame one by one, execute the SET
BRDSTART with specifying the frame No. and board No.
For example, frame 2 is powered on for the first time. To load all software
required by boards in frame 2, set the starting mode as LOAD:
SET BRDSTART: FN = 2, MOD = LOAD;
3 If the frame runs normally, use the LOD TOBP command to update the
software in it.
LOD TOBP: FN=2, SRC=BAM;
Loading software in one frame takes about three minutes.
Reset the frame after the loading succeeds.

Step Description

4 Set the starting mode as FLASH for this frame. Use the SET BRDSTART
command to specify the frame No. and board No.
For example, after the successful loading in frame 2, set the starting mode as
FLASH.
SET BRDSTART: FN = 2, MOD = FLASH;

4.3.4 Loading Tone Files

Tone files include basic tone file and dynamic tone file. The following introduces the
loading modes for these files respectively.

I. Loading the Basic Tone File

Basic tone file is a recorded file that is released along with the software version. The file
is named tonefile_mbl.arj and located in the \bam\bin\new directory.

When uploading all host software to the OMU hard disk through LOD TOBAM, basic
tone file is excluded from the loading by default. You can also upload it by selecting the
[Tone selection (BL)] option. Details are as follows.

Step Description

1 Power on the OMU and the board to be loaded with tone files. The OMU and
the board run normally.
If the UMG8900 is running in a network, isolate the board before loading the
tone file. In addition, use the DSP TCECRES command to make sure that the
board occupies no resource before resetting the board. This is to keep the
influence on the services at a lowest level.

2 Use the LOD TOBAM command to load the file tonefile_mbl.arj in the
\bam\bin\new directory from the server whose IP address is 1.1.1.1 to the
BAM of the OMU.
LOD TOBAM: VT=MS, BT=TCU, FN="tonefile_mbl.arj", SIP="1.1.1.1",
UID="***", PWD="***", BL=TCUT-1;
Do select the [Tone selection (BL)] option, which is not selected by default.
The parameter FN refers to the name of the file loaded. The default value is
[all of the files], means that all TCU-related files, including board software,
tone files and so on, are to be loaded. You can enter the name of a tone file to
load a single tone file.

3 Execute the LOD TOBT command to load the file tonefile_mbl.arj on the
BAM of the OMU to the TCU.
LOD TOBT: BT=TCU, FN="tonefile_mbl.arj", EN=ENABLE, SRC=BAM;
4 Reset the board using the RST BRD command. Tone file loading succeeds.

II. Loading the Dynamic Tone File

The dynamic tone file is in the \bam\bin\tonepatch directory. It is to modify the existing
tones in or add new tones in the basic tone file.

For more information about the dynamic tone file, see Chapter 6 “Tone File Creating
and Loading” in HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Operation Manual -
Routine Operation.

4.4 Troubleshooting

4.4.1 Handling Rule

During the software installation, a number of software need to be loaded, especially the
loading process of the OMU is relatively complex, various problems may occur. It is
recommended that you handle them based on the following rules.
z Strictly follow the operation guidelines in the software installation manual.
z Confirm the validity of the operation before handling problems.
z Do not modify any files in the directory c:/bam or its subdirectories in the OMU
hard disk at will.
z If you cannot solve the problems based on the accompanying documentation and
the relative online help, contact the technical support personnel of Huawei at local
office immediately and make records of the related data.

4.4.2 Frequent Problems and Handling

I. No Display on Serial Port Console after System Starts up

Check whether the serial ports are properly connected, or whether the serial port cable
is disconnected, or whether the connected serial port is consistent with that configured
on the hyper terminal.

Check whether the configuration parameters of the serial port on the hyper terminal are
the same as those described in Section 4.2.4 Setting Hyper Terminal, including the
baud rate configured on the hyper terminal. If not, modify them.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-24
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

Caution:

If the above operations are normal and there is no display yet, contact to the technical
support personnel at the local office. Be sure not to perform any operations in case of
occurrence of more problems.

II. Illegible Characters Displayed on Serial Port Console after System Starts up

Generally, this symptom is caused by the erroneous parameter configuration on the

serial port. Therefore, check the serial port configuration on the hyper terminal;
especially check whether the baud rate is the same as the configuration parameter
described in Section 4.2.4 Setting Hyper Terminal. If not, modify it.

If the fault still exists, contact with the technical support personnel of Huawei at the local
office.

III. Display Normally after System Starts up, but Cannot Enter any Commands

The symptom is generally caused by the serial port cable. So you need to replace it. If
the process fails, you can try to use another serial port on the console. If you are using
the hyper terminal of Windows, you just need to reboot Windows.

IV. All Parameters Recovered Incorrectly When system Re-starts up

It is likely that the configuration is not saved. You must reconfigure and save it again.

Caution:

As the configuration cannot be saved automatically, you must save it to the

configuration file through the command SAVE CFG. Thus, the system can restore the
configuration after being rebooted.

Also, it is likely that the board hard disk was damaged. You just need to replace the
OMU. Generally, because the configuration is not saved in the first case, the
information cannot be restored to normal.

V. OMU Startup Failure

If the BootROM fails to start up, the system will continually reset the board. If the upper
layer software fails to start up, it is possibly caused by the upper software failure.

If the board is repeatedly reset when the BootROM is started, it can be concluded that
the fault results from the BootROM version or the upper layer software based on the
debugging output of the OMU serial port.

The board upper layer software version corresponds to the software system. So if you
change any software version, it may result in the boot failure of the board upper layer
software.

For the above case, check whether the corollary UMG8900 software are complete, and
whether their versions are consistent according to the version configuration information
table and release notes.

VI. Unsuccessful Loading of Other Boards

When other boards except the OMU fail to be loaded software, the system will output
the debugging information on the serial port of the OMU. To draw a conclusion, you
also need to view the debugging output information of the serial ports on other boards
and on the master OMU.

If the system prompts “DidErr” on the boards, it indicates that the device state is
erroneous. It is likely that the boards configured on the master OMU are inconsistent
with the actually inserted ones. Also, it is likely that the back board is not configured on
the master OMU when the path process unit (RPU) or ATM AAL2/AAL5 SAR
processing unit (ASU) is loading.

If the system prompts “NegoErr” on the boards, it indicates that the version negotiation
is erroneous. It is likely that some or all software of the service boards are not saved in
the master OMU hard disk (If the board boot mode flag is configured as CONSULT or
LOAD). Besides, check whether the board software is uploaded correctly.

If the system prompts “Fail to send DidReq message to OMU” on the boards and resets
them, it indicates that the boards fail to send device ID to the OMU when the BootROM
startup. It is likely that the master OMU is not started up or it is started up, but the
inter-process communication (IPC) communication channels between it and the
service boards are abnormal. If the IPC channel is normal, you see the synchronization
information of the IPC channel on the master OMU and the boards when the BootROM
starts the software loading. If the IPC channel is abnormal, it is possibly that the CPU
IDs of the boards are calculated improperly. In this case, check whether the frame
number and slot number of boards are correct.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-26
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

If the system prompts “Master application error” on the boards, it indicates that the
cyclic redundancy check (CRC) error occurs when the boards start the upper layer
software. It is possibly that the upper layer software stored in the Flash is damaged or
incomplete. If you are sure that the software is loaded from the master OMU hard disk,
check whether the software saved in the OMU hard disk is correct.

VII. UMG8900 Software Incorrectly Uploaded to OMU Hard Disk

There are two methods to upload files: one is to upload files through the LOD TOBAM
MML command, the other is to upload files through the FTP on the debugging interface
FE0.

The uploaded files may be not named according to the version configuration. Thus, the
OMU loading management cannot identify the files.

Or the uploaded files are incomplete. Since the binary destination files are uploaded in
text, which results in failure to the destination files saved in the OMU hard disk, the
board cannot be started up after its software loading.

All the software in the version configuration information table is uploaded incompletely.
In this case, the system will repeatedly reset the boards because it can not find the
configured files during the loading.

VIII. Incorrectly Useing File Uploading Command of Loading Management

With the support of the FTP server, the loading management can also implement the
dynamic uploading of the UMG8900 software and the dynamic update of the version
configuration information table through the MML command.

Cause: All connections and settings on the FTP server are correct, but the system has
no response for a long time and reports failure after issuing the command LOD TOBAM
in the MML command line.

Cause: If the BAM maintenance port of the OMU is connected with the PC network port
through a straight-through cable, it is possibly that the connection fails as the
configured IP addresses are not in the same sub-network. Also, it is possibly that the
FTP connection fails due to the network congestion. Make sure that you can
successfully ping the IP address of the BAM maintenance network port on the OMU
from your PC.

IX. Using Unmatched Version

Since each product version has its own hardware logic, BSP, upper layer software and
software configuration data, you must use them based on the matched version. Other
uses except there are some special explanations may result in the board startup failure
and service running failure.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

4-27
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 4 Installing Host Software

If the failure is caused by this case, you must reload the OMU software, and update the
software on all service boards. Be sure to use them based on the matched version.

Chapter 5 Configuring Remote Maintenance

System

5.1 Overview of Remote Maintenance System

The remote maintenance system provides an access interface for the maintenance
personnel to perform remote maintenance. The maintenance personnel use modem to
connect to a public switched telephone network (PSTN) though the local computer, and
dial up to the remote server. They monitor and maintain the running equipment in the
network through the remote access service provided by Windows 2000 Server.

Note:
Windows 2000 operating system is the product of the Microsoft Corporation. For
detailed description of use, see the relevant technical documents of the Microsoft®
Windows 2000.

Remote maintenance system is applied to the device maintenance with an Internet

private network address, which cannot directly connect to the public Internet. It is
unnecessary if maintenance can be done through the intranet. The maintenance
personnel need to perform this function only when they are unable to log in to the user
intranet at the remote end.

5.1.1 Physical Connection Access Mode

UMG8900 provides a remote maintenance system for remote dial-up access. As

shown in Figure 5-1, the remote workstation dials up to connect the remote access
server (RAS) (an emergency workstation can also serve as RAS) through a PSTN. The
remote workstation is installed with the client software, and the remote access server is
configured with the RAS.

Chapter 6 Upgrading Host Software

6.1 Overview of Upgrading Host Software

The UMG8900 host software upgrade and patch load are important steps in the
UMG8900 software installation. The operation of software upgrade and patch load of
the UMG8900 will be introduced in this chapter.

The function of this operation is to upgrade software version and load patches to the
UMG8900. If you want to upgrade the LMT system, refer to the section 2.4 Unloading
Software of the chapter 2 in this manual.

6.2 Upgrading Host Software Version

6.2.1 Upgrade Description

The software version upgrade can correct error of the previous version or add new
features. The objects of the software upgrade are all concerned loadable software
during software installation.

There are a lot of board software components for each board type in the UMG8900.
The software upgrade may only upgrade some software components in some boards,
so it leads to many software upgrade cases, and we can not list all here. We will
describe basic operation procedures according to basic principle of the software
upgrade.

Generally, there are two upgrade cases:

z All software components of the same type of boards are upgraded.
z Part software components of the same type of boards are upgraded
We can sort all boards of the UMG8900 and any kind of upgrade can be classified into
one of the above case.

Note:
As for the upgrade needing re-installation of all UMG8900 software, the operation is the
same as the installation of the UMG8900 software. We do not describe it here.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

6-1
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 6 Upgrading Host Software

For the MML commands used in this section, refer to the MML online help released
together with the equipment.

6.2.2 Preparations for Upgrade

I. Backing up and Saving Data

Before upgrade, the configuration data on the boards or on the same type of the boards
to be upgraded must be saved. Using the SAVE CFG command, you can save
configuration data. For more information about this command, refer to MML command
on-line help in the LMT system.

The purpose of configuration data backup is to automatically recover configuration data

after successful upgrade, thereby reduce errors due to manual configuration or
re-configuration.

Note:
Backup configuration data can be re-used if configuration command and configuration
function of product do not change. Generally, the saved MML batch processing
command file needs to be modified properly.
If version change leads to some changes of MML commands, please modify related
commands of data configuration script at the same time.

II. Checking Version

Check the latest software version to be used for upgrading and ensure that the version
passes authentication and is available.

Modify the software version according to the release notes.

III. Backing up Historical Software Version

To restore the early software version in the case of failure upgrade, you need to backup
data before upgrading software. Two backup methods are shown as follows:
z Connect the BAM of the master OMU through the FTP, find and confirm all
software components to be upgraded in the directory c:/bam/bin/new in the master
OMU hard disk, and load the current running version of software to a PC to backup
data.
z Use a correct upgrade method. Upgrade the software by the upgrade function
provided by MML commands.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

6-2
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 6 Upgrading Host Software

IV. Backing up Device Software on OMU

Using the SYC BAMFILE command, you can backup all software files and
configuration files of the master OMU to the slave OMU and also update the version
configuration table of the slave OMU.

V. Deleting Patches on ALL Boards

Execute the DSP PATCH command to check the patches on each board. For example,
to check the patches of the front board in slot 1 frame 1, execute the following
command:
DSP PATCH: FN=1, SN=1, BP=FRONT;
For a board containing patches, execute the RMB PATCH command to delete them
with patch No. 1. For example, to delete the patches of the front board in slot 1 frame 1,
execute the following command:
RMV PATCH: FN=1, SN=1, BP=FRONT, PATCHNO=1;

6.2.3 Upgrading OMU

Upgrade of the slave OMU can be classified into the two cases mentioned 6.2.1
Upgrade Description. The master OMU upgrade is relatively special. There are two
methods to update the master OMU:
z Use MML command to upgrade the OMU software and then reset the OMU to
make the software effective.
z Upgrade the OMU software at the debug interface manually and then start up the
OMU to make the software effective.
For the first case, the master OMU must correctly start.

The special points of the OMU upgrade are that the upgrade of other boards is based
on the normal running of the OMU. If there is only one OMU (the master OMU), the
upgrade is relatively simple. If there are two OMU (the master OMU and the slave
OMU), the upgrade is more complex than that of one OMU. If it is necessary, you also
need to upgrade the bam directory and its sub directories and files in the board hard
disk.

If upgrading the OMU software concerns the bam directory, you need to upgrade the
bam directory first. The method is: when the OMU runs normally, connect the OMU
through the FTP client terminal, manually upload the bam directory and all files of its
sub-directories through the FTP.

I. Upgrading for Only One OMU

Two methods are used: MML command line upgrade and manual upgrade.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

6-3
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 6 Upgrading Host Software

1) Using MML command line to upgrade

Configure the server first, upload the late version software on the OMU to the
corresponding directory in the FTP server and then configure user name and
password.

Create the connection with the OMU through the MML client in the LMT system or
operation and maintenance system, and then use the LOD TOBAM command to
upload the late version software to the OMU hard disk.

Using the SET BRDSTART command, you can modify the load board first. Using the
LOD TOBT or LOD TOBP command, you can write the late version software to the
OMU Flash. Select “Enable” for the parameter “EN”.

After the software is loaded successfully, new software is activated and becomes
effective. The activation process is: if the OMU host software or hard disk logic is
upgraded, the board is automatically re-booted. If only extended BootROM of the board
is upgraded, the board is not re-booted.

Note:
The activation of the extended BootROM is meaningless. The extended BootROM is
only used when a board re-boots.

2) Manual upgrade
Configure the FTP server first, upload the late version software on the OMU to the
corresponding directory in FTP server and configure user name and password.

Connect the debug network port of the OMU to the network port of a PC where the FTP
server is through the straight through network cable.

Connect the COM0 interface of the OMU to the serial port of the PC (or the FTP server)
through the serial cable to establish the hyper terminal connection.

Upload the latest version software from the FTP server to the OMU Flash. The
installation is the same as that of the UMG8900 software.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

6-4
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 6 Upgrading Host Software

Note:
For this method, you need to reset the board no matter what kind of software is
upgraded. After the upgrade, the software version in OMU Flash will be different from
that saved in the hard disk. It is suggested to upload the new version to the OMU hard
disk after upgrade.

II. Upgrading for the Master and Slave OMUs

Two methods are used: upgrade by MML command lines and manual upload.
1) Using MML command line to upgrade
Firstly, upload the software to the OMU hard disk according to the first method that only
the master OMU exists.

Using the SYS BAMFILE command, you can back up the new version software to the
slave OMU hard disk through the MML client of the LMT system.

Note:
If the master and slave OMU device files are not backed up before, some other files
may be backed up between the master OMU and slave OMU this time.

Any one of the following two methods can be used to implement the software upgrade
on the master OMU and slave OMU.
z Set the master/slave OMU boot mode flag as CONSULT. Reset the slave board,
and the slave OMU will automatically upgrade its software from the master OMU
according to its version condition after the slave OMU starts up. After s the lave
board starts up, then reset the master board, and the slave board becomes a
master board now. After original master OMU resets, its software is compared with
the software of the new master OMU, and the software is upgraded and becomes
effective.
z Using the LOD TOBT command, you can write the software to the master/slave
OMU Flash and set parameter “EN” as “Enable”. After the software is written to the
Flash, the new version software will be activated according to the conditions.

Caution:

To use the first method, you must ensure the new and old versions of the software on
the master/slave OMU are compatible.

2) Manual upgrade
Set the boot mode flag of the master OMU and slave OMU as Flash first.

The following operations are the same as the situation when one OMU exists, but you
need to operate two boards. After successful upgrade, the new software version is
uploaded to the master OMU hard disk, then executes the synchronization command to
synchronize the master OMU and slave OMU.

6.2.4 Upgrading Service Boards

Note:
Service boards described here are the boards except the master OMU, such as the
MPU, slave OMU and other service boards.
Yon must upgrade the master OMU after upgrading the slave OMU, otherwise, the
software version of the master board is different from that of the slave board, which
leads that the device works abnormally.

Two methods are used for the service board upgrade:

z Use MML commands to upload the board software and reset the board to make
new version become effective
z Set the board boot flag and reset the board directly

I. Using MML command line to upgrade

Like upgrading the master OMU, upload the latest version software to the OMU hard
disk. Device files need to be synchronized (SYC BAMFILE) if the master OMU and
slave OMU exist.

Set boot flags of all boards as CONSULT or Flash.

Using the LOD TOBT or LOD TOBP command, you can write the latest uploaded
software version to the board Flash that needs to be upgraded, and specify the

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

6-6
Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 6 Upgrading Host Software

command parameter EN as “Enable”. After the new version software was written to the
Flash, the new version software will be activated according to the specific situation.

Note:
The software is activated in different modes according to different situations. If the
UMG8900 software is upgraded, the board must be reset. If other software
components are upgraded, the activation modes are decided by the board and the
software type

II. Resetting a Board Directly to Update

Like upgrading the OMU, upload the latest version software to the OMU hard disk. If
both the master OMU and slave OMU exist, you need to synchronize the device files
(SYC BAMFILE).

Set boot flag as “CONSULT” for all boards.

Reset the board to be upgraded, and the software of the board is automatically
upgraded after the board starts up.

6.2.5 Canceling Upgrade

The UMG8900 provides an upgrade cancellation function. If the upgrade fails, the
previous version can be recovered to ensure normal working of the device.

Using the LOD TOBAM command, you can load the software to the OMU; the system
will automatically backup the old version software. Thus you can use the RBK
VERSION command to recover the old version in the event of upgrade failure. The
board software components to be recovered are those standard versions saved in the
backup directory in the configuration file.

Caution:

Using the LOD TOBAM command, you can upload the new version when software is
upgraded. If the software is loaded manually through the debug interface, the PBK
VERSION command results in the system version confusion and unanticipated
mistake.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

Step Description

1 Start the MML command line of the LMT system, and execute the PBK
VERSION command.

2 To cancel the whole board version, select the parameter “board type”. To
cancel specified software, select the software name.

3 Use the SYC BAMFILE command to synchronize the device software in

the master and slave OMUs.

4 Set the board boot mode to CONSULT.

5 Reset the board whose software version upgrading is to be cancelled.

Caution:

To recover software on both the master and slave OMUs, you must use the LOD TOBP
or LOD TOBT command to write the recovered software to the Flash of the OMU first
and then reset the master and slave OMUs.

6.3 Introduction to Loading Patches

Patch loading is a very important method for online software upgrade. This section
covers introduction to patch and patch loading process, and other related description.

The software patch is a term in software system and software engineering. A patch is
an independent software unit released to correct some bugs in the system. The
UMG8900 products include two kinds of patches: the cold patch and hot patch.

6.3.1 Cold Patches

A cold patch is a VFS file. In the form, a cold patch is the same as an independent
version. A cold patch file includes all the functions of a board. It aims to correct errors
that hot patches cannot repair.

The loading mode of a cold patch is similar to that of upgrading a single board. Use the
LOD TOBP or the LOD TOBT command to load the VFS file onto a board. After the
resetting of the board, the patch will be activated automatically. Then the version
number of the loaded file will change. You can load the VFS file of the old version to roll
back a patch. Therefore, save the VFS file of the old version for patch roll-back before
loading a cold patch.

Installation Manual - Software Installation
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 6 Upgrading Host Software

6.3.2 Hot Patches

Hot patches compose a PAT file. Different from a cold patch, a hot patch only includes
repairing functions. Each board has a corresponding PAT file. A PAT file can contain
many patches and different patches are distinguished by their patch numbers. The hot
patch is a kind of online patch, which can repair system errors without interrupting the
normal running of the system. That is, a hot patch is to upgrade the system dynamically.

Hot patch numbers start from 1 and are successive. Different patches are in
incremental relationship. The running of a patch with a greater number depends on the
running of patches with smaller numbers. Here “running” means that a patch is in the
active or running state. Both the two states indicate that a patch is engaged in the
running of a board. For example, there are five patches for a board numbered 1, 2, 3, 4
and 5. If No. 3 patch needs to be activated, Nos. 1 and 2 patches shall be running.

A hot patch can be in the following four states:

z IDLE: refers to the initial state of a patch. A patch is not loaded to or is removed
from a board.
z DEACTIVE: indicates that a patch is loaded to a board but not engaged in the
running of the board.
z ACTIVE: refers to the trial running state. A patch is engaged in the running of a
board, but it will change into the DEACTIVE state automatically and stops running
after the board restarts up.
z RUNNING: refers to the normal running state of a patch. The status of a patch will
not change after the board restarts up.
The state transition of a patch is shown in Figure 6-1.

The LOD TOBP or LOD TOBT command is also used to load hot patches. After a PAT
file is loaded to the FLASH of a board, the patches are in the DEACTIVE state and not

engaged in the running of the board. Use the ACT PATCH command to activate the
patches. The patches become ACTIVE and begin to engage in the running. In the
ACTIVE state, the patches will roll back to DEACTIVE automatically if a board is reset.
Use the CON PATCH command to change the patches from the ACTIVE state to the
RUNNING state. If the board is reset, the status of the running patches will not change.

6.3.3 Loading

Loading is to save the specified file into the FLASH of a board. The loading commands
include LOD TOBP and LOD TOBT. The LOD TOBP command loads the file
according to the board position while the LOD TOBT command loads according to the
board type. Loading sources include: the BAM hard disk usually and the FTP server
sometimes.

6.3.4 Activating

Activating is to change a patch from the non-running state into the active or running
state. For a cold patch, restart the board to enable the running of a newly loaded VFS
file. For a hot patch, use the ACT PATCH command to change the patch from the
DEACTIVE state into the ACTIVE state.

6.3.5 Rolling Back

Rolling back is to change a patch from the active or running state into the non-running
state, just the reversed operation of activating. For a cold patch, reload the old VFS file
and reset the board to roll back the patch. For a hot patch, use the DEA PATCH or RMV
PATCH command to roll back the patch.

6.3.6 Confirming

Confirming is to change a patch from the trial running state to the running state. This
operation only applies to a hot patch and uses the CON PATCH command.

6.3.7 Comparison Between Cold Patches and Hot Patches
