2. GENERAL OPERATION (Figure 3-1)

When the ELT "MAN / RESET- OFF-AUTO" switch is on "OFF" position, the ELT does not
operate.
In "MAN / RESET" position, the +14V voltage is sent to 406, 121.5 / 243 MHz, encoding board
by the master board.
The encoding board sends the COSPAS-SARSAT message to the 406 MHz transmitter board
with 50 sec ± 2.5 repetition rate in conformity with COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system data.
Between 2 transmissions on 406Mhz channel, the ELT transmits on 121.5/243Mhz frequencies.
The "Xmit Alert" red warning light is on during transmission.
In "AUTO" position, the adapter board supplies the encoding board to perform the selftest
sequence.
The selftest result is indicated by the red warning light on the front panel.
- light comes on during two seconds : result OK
- light flashes: faulty result.
Then the ELT waits for a crash detection (in conformity with ED62 or DO183/DO204 curve) to
transmit. When a shock occurs and has the characteristics given in the ED62 or DO204 curves,
the ELT will transmit same as the manual operation.

3. DETAILED OPERATION
The ELT 96 and ELT 97 incorporate circuits that perform the functions illustrated in the block
diagram shown in Figure 2
NOTE : Both transmitter units ELT96 and ELT97 are functionally the same models, and both
G-switches are similar as regards hardware.

3.A Sensor board :

It is designed to :

1.O Changing ELT96 in ELT97 (or reverse)

The only difference between ELT96 and ELT97 is the g-switch crash sensor setting. It is
possible to change an ELT96 to an ELT97 (or reverse) by replacing the g-switch unit and
updating the placards.
Be sure to use the correct g-switch and placards part numbers when doing this operation (check
the “applicability” column of the illustrated part list). The ELT serial number does not change
during this operation.

You must issue a new "Aeronautical 406Mhz Emergency Locator Transmitter Sheet" (page 706)
after changing the type of this ELT. It must be clearly written in the comments the type of
modification (ELT96 to ELT97 or ELT97 to ELT96).
Refers to the chapters “Dissassembly”, “Checks” and “Assembly and storage” of this CMM for
the detailed steps.

1) Ask for the correct g-switch, characteristics placard and control placard (ELT96 type or
ELT97 type)
2) For ELT97, ask for a “Industrie Canada” placard (item 1 330)
3) Remove the previous g-switch
4) Mount the new g-switch
5) Test the ELT
6) Fill the correct informations in a new “characteristics placard” (s/n, modification index)
7) Replace the “characteristics placard” on the upper housing by the new one.
8) Update the “validity placard” as necessary
9) For ELT97 : place the "Industrie Canada” placard on the upper housing as show in the
IPL figure 1
10) For ELT96 : remove the “Industrie Canada” placard from the upper housing
11) Fill a new “control placard”, replace the older one
12) Fill and send to Air Precision an “Aeronautical 406Mhz ELT sheet” to update our ELT

INTRODUCTION

1. GENERAL
The illustrated Parts Catalog purpose is to identify all the equipment components which can be
replaced at maintenance 2nd level.
The illustrated Parts Catalog comprises the following sections :
- Introduction
- Alphanumeric Index
- Illustrated parts list

2. USE OF ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST

The Illustrated Parts list gives the list and the illustrations of the parts which form the considered
assembly.
The various columns of a parts list page are in the following order :
1st column : figure and item numbers (ITEM)
2nd column : part number
3rd column : description (part name)
4th column : effectivity
5th column : quantity per next higher assembly
6th column : observations

2.A Figure and item numbers (ITEM)

An item number is given to each assy, sub-assy and part which has a part number and is
mentioned in the list.
The figure number is indicated on the first line, at the top of each page.
The assemblies, sub-assemblies and parts listed but not shown on the figure are identified with
a dash (-) placed before the item number of these assemblies, sub-assemblies or parts.
A letter after the item number identifies a variant of this part.

2.B Part number

A part number is given to each assembly, sub-assembly and detailed parts (either shown on the
figure or not).

2.C Description
This column is inscribed with item names and highlights the relationship that may exist between
several components.
The names of assembly components are offset by one indenture to the right with respect to the
top assembly considered.

The first attaching part is always preceded by "PIECES DE FIXATION /ATTACHING PARTS"
and the last attaching part is always followed by "* * *", at each assembly or sub-assembly.

2.D Effectivity
Codes of this column allow thanks to a list at the end of the cross-reference table to know the
validity of each part.
Items with no effectivity codes have the same validity than the cross-reference ; this validity is
shown at the L.H. lower corner of the page.

2.E Quantity
This column is inscribed with the quantity of parts necessary per next higher assembly.
Where the same assembly or part appears in several figures, the quantity is given in the first
item line only; the next time it appears, the mention RF (For Reference/pour mémoire) is
entered.
The mention RF also applies to a set of parts (assembly or installation) that does not form a
recognized assembly.
Where the item quantity drawn up as required (E.g : section cut to length, etc…), the quantity
indication is replaced by the mention AR (As Required / à la demande).

2.F Observations
This column allows to define the availability of a spare-part, see paragraph 4.

2.H SPARE PARTS

2.H.1) Classification
A spare part can be classified into three categories :
- procurable parts,
- parts procurable on request (OR),
- not procurable parts (NP).

2.H.2) Definition of "Procurable part"

A spare part is considered as being procurable when :
- it is constituted in an assembly or a sub-assembly,
- it is a simple element which can be easily installed or removed without any special
manufacturing mount or support,
- its replacement does not change aircraft airworthiness and/or its replacement procedure
is described in the Maintenance Manual, except for the parts the procedure of which
may be carried out by respecting the state of the art.

2.H.3) Definition of "Procurable part on request" (OR)

The parts procurable on request (OR) are :
- parts assembled by riveting (ribs, skins...),
- detail parts of some equipment or accessories,
- any part the replacement of which requires a rework proposal or a special ability,
- any part the replacement of which affects the fleet technical follow-up.

2.H.4) Definition of "Not procurable part" (NP)

The not procurable parts are :
- cancelled parts,
- parts validated after stock depletion or replaced by a procurable part number,
- parts assembled by welding.
The not procurable classified parts may be supplied at the level of the upper functional
assembly, except for cancelled parts, or with a rework proposal, which has been analysed on
request by the manufacturer.
