Lab 9: Accessing NFS Storage

Introduction

This addendum provides detailed guidance on performing Lab 10: Accessing NFS
Storage of the VMware vSphere 6.0: Install, Configure, Manage course, using a NETLAB+
system.

Objective: Configure access to an NFS datastore

In this lab, you will be using the vclient machine to complete your objectives. You will
be performing the following tasks:

1. Configure access to an NFS datastore


2. View iSCSI and NFS storage information

1 Configure Access to an NFS Datastore

In this task, you create an NFS datastore and you view its contents.

1. Click on the vclient graphic on the topology page.


2. Log into the vclient VM as vclient using the password vmware123.
3. Open the Chrome web browser by clicking on the icon at the bottom corner of
the window.

4. Click Advanced, followed by clicking on Proceed to 172.16.1.1 on the warning


page.

If you experience the “vSphere Client web server is initializing” message, please
wait an additional 2-3 minutes and refresh the page to continue.

You may ignore the “browser-OS combination” warning message presented on


the VMware vCenter Single Sign-On page and continue moving forward with the
lab.

5. Login with the username admin and the password vmware.


6. On the Home tab, click the Storage icon under Inventories pane in the main
workspace.

7. Click the Training datacenter in the Object Navigator.

8. Click the Related Objects tab and click on the Datastores button.

9. Record the names of the listed datastores.

10. Click on the Create a new datastore icon.

11. The New Datastore wizard opens in a new window.


12. On the Location page, keep the default and click Next.
13. On the Type page, select NFS and click Next.

14. On the Select NFS version page, select NFS 3 and click Next.

15. On the Name and configuration page, enter the following:


a. Datastore name: NFS-Vol2
b. Folder: /mnt/nfsvol2
c. Server: 172.16.1.99
16. At the bottom of the window, mark the checkbox next to Mount NFS as read-
only and click Next.

17. On the Host accessibility page, mark the checkbox next to both esxi-
1.vmeduc.com and esxi-2.vmeduc.com. Click Next.

18. Verify the information on the Ready to complete page and click Finish.
19. Click the Refresh icon in the title bar area and verify that your NFS datastore is
listed in the inventory.

2 View NFS Storage Information

In this task, you will view information about your iSCSI and NFS storage, and you will
view the contents of the NFS datastore.

1. Click on NFS-Vol2 in the Object Navigator pane.

2. Click on the Manage tab and then the click the Settings button.

3. While viewing the Settings, select General from the main workspace area.

4. Review the NFS storage properties and record the capacity information below.

5. Within the center pane, select Connectivity with Hosts.

6. Verify that both esxi-1 and esxi-2 hosts are listed with a Connected datastore
connectivity. Record the Access Mode type below:

7. Underneath the Manage tab, select the Files button.

8. Notice the datastore is empty. Attempt to create a new folder by clicking on the
Create a new folder icon.

9. A pop-up window appears, type VMs as the name for the folder and click Create.

10. Are you able to successfully create the VMs folder in the NFS-Vol2 datastore?

11. Close the vclient PC viewer to complete the lab.
