ACT 1 SCENE 1
ALED ENTERS STAGE, READING PAGE 17 OF TWO CAN KEEP A
SECRET. HE DOESN’T NOTICE THE AUDIENCE UNTIL HE IS NEAR SR
EXIT. HE LOOKS UP
ALED: (SHOCKED) Ah! (NORMALLY) Hi! I am Aled Withers, and I am in
year 12 at Weybourne Sixth Form College and University. I keep to
myself a lot, but I talk to other people when they initiate a
conversation with me – these are often highly uneventful, as I don’t
know what to talk about because they all see me as weird for liking
to read a lot.
HE WALKS TOWARD CS AND PLACES HIS BOOKMARK IN HIS BOOK.
HE WALKS OFFSTAGE SLOWLY, DAZED IN THOUGHT. MUSIC PLAYS
WHILE SCENE CHANGES
ACT 1 SCENE 2
WE APPEAR TO BE IN AN EMPTY CLASSROOM, THERE ARE
DISCARDED SHEETS STREWN ACROSS THE TABLES. ALED WALKS ON
VIA SL ENTRANCE.
ALED: (SHOUTING TO SOMEONE BEHIND HIM OS) Just give me some
space!!! That’s all I want right now!!! (HUFFS, TURNS TO AUDIENCE)
Wow. People are highly annoying at times, aren’t they? But
sometimes you have to put up with it, even if you can’t really be
bothered to. (HE GRABS HIS BACKPACK THAT HE THREW ON THE
FLOOR AS HE ENTERED, OPENS IT, AND PULLS OUT TWO CAN KEEP A
SECRET THEN RETURNS IT TO THE FLOOR.)
LUCAS: Aled! (TIRED OUT) Why are you in here? Mr Kinch was
pestering me to come find you! So, I gave in! I had no other clue
what to do, and I know you come in here a lot since it isn’t used.
ALED: (WITHOUT LOOKING UP, PAUSES WRITING) Yeah. Just tell him
I needed some time - I couldn’t go to the history lesson, I have too
much on my mind already. More work will just overload me.
(CONTINUES WRITING)
LUCAS: (SHRUGS) Oh, alright. Easy enough to say I guess, but how
are you gonna do the Bio lesson later?
ALED: (LOOKS AT LUCAS. STOPS WRITING COMPLETELY) I will just go
to attendance and ask them to mark me in for the rest of the day,
and I will go onto Teams and get my work done. We share all our
classes, so can you tell the teachers I will email them my work
please??
LUCAS: (RELUCTANTLY) Fine.
LUCAS WALKS OS VIA SR EXIT. ALED STILL SITS THERE WITH A BLANK
EXPRESSION. PAUSE. NOTHING HAPPENS. ALED GRABS HIS BAG,
OPENS IT, PUTS EVERYTHING BACK IN, SLINGS IT OVER HIS
SHOULDER AND THE BELL RINGS. HE ALSO WALKS OFF VIA SR EXIT.
MUSIC PLAYS WHILE SCENE CHANGE.
ACT 1 SCENE 3
THE SCHOOL CANTEEN. FULL OF LENGTHY TABLES WITH CHAIRS
DOWN THE SIDES. FOOD STALL USL. TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS
CHATTER AMONGST THEMSELVES. ALED AND LUCAS WALK IN WITH
SOME OTHER YEAR 12S FROM DSL ONE OF THE BOYS TAPS LUCAS
ON THE SHOULDER.
MILO: Hey Lucas- Aled told me your name. I-I’m Milo, and I joined
last w-week. I am in Aled’s maths class, and he said I could hang out
with you, and that’s when he told me about you.
LUCAS: (NERVOUS) Oh, uhm, hi?? I- oop, yep, you know my name
already, so I don’t need to introduce myself. (TO HIMSELF,
WHISPERING) Bring yourself together, it's just a boy. This isn’t a big
deal, Lucas.
ALED: (NUDGES LUCAS WITH HIS ELBOW, WHISPERS TO LUCAS) I can
tell something is wrong, come on, tell me. (TO THE GROUP) Me and
Lucas are nipping into the corridor for a sec, I need to talk to him
about something.
ALED AND LUCAS WALK OS VIA DSR WHILE THE OTHER BOYS WALK
U. THE OTHER BOYS FIND A TABLE WHILE ALED AND LUCAS ARE OS.
MILO: I wonder what they are talking about.
KILLIAN: (OBLIVIOUS) I dunno, probably something personal. They do
this often. I never pay that much attention to what is said
afterwards. Then again, I never pay attention. I am always oblivious.
I’m Killian by the way.
BLAKE: (NODDING SLIGHTLY) Yep, he really is always oblivious to the
world, but when he isn’t oblivious to the rest of the world, he says
some decent stuff. (PAUSE - GETS WALLET OUT AND COUNTS HIS
MONEY) My name’s Blake, nice to meet ya Milo.
THE BOYS FIND A TABLE AND SIT DOWN. MILO AND KILLIAN BEGIN
EATING THEIR FOOD WHILE BLAKE GOES TO THE FOOD STALL USL,
ALED AND LUCAS WALK BACK ONSTAGE. THE PAIR FIND THE REST
OF THE GROUP WITH EASE. ALED, BLAKE AND LUCAS ARRIVE BACK
AT THE TABLE AT THE SAME TIME. A GIRL WALKS UP TO THE TABLE.
SHE LOOKS SLIGHTLY LOST.
