Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
Globalization is one of the most debatable issues in today‟s generation. Just like many
things it will always have both immense sides; the positive and the Negative side. As Pascual
Lamy once said, Globalization is efficient but also so far incredibly unjust.
Globalization refers to the increasing free flow of goods, services, financial, capital,
and labor across national borders. As stated by Scholte 2005:16, globalization is found in
enlarge movement between countries of people, money, investment, diseases, pollutants,
message, ideas etc. Through globalization it could provide a lot of positive effects in global
community such as it brings the best of the technology, helps the developing/underdeveloped
country to become developed, introduction of different cultures and economic growth. On the
other hand, it also brings different consequences that can affect our lives like it creates
superiority of bigger nations over the smaller ones, free trade also hinders the growth of
underdeveloped nations, kills the values and traditions of the later country and nations tends
suffer from identity crisis.(Ashmit Sirohi, 2017)
The integration of globalization on countries most specially in Asia and Pacific
region as discussed by Adrianus Mooy, Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social
Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) There is wide variety of impacts of
globalization in the Asia and Pacific region, but there is a strong correlation between
integration and the influence of globalization. East Asia is fully integrated. South-East Asia,
at least before the crisis, is well integrated. These countries have high growth rates and good
economic performances, but they also bore the brunt of the crisis. South Asia is slowly
integrating, and the other States are basically not integrated. South Asia‟s performance has
been moderate and the others stable, but the countries of these areas were not much affected
by the crisis. Integrating fast seems to mean big benefits but also prospects for trouble.
Slower integration leads to slower growth, but less risk.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a review of the related literature and studies regarding on the
good and bad effects of globalization in global community.

Globalization may lie on the both side. It may be a boon for one country but detrimental to
another, either in its political, economic, social and cultural aspect.
According to Gazieh M.(2001) The study shows that though globalization is a process
by which capital, goods, services and labor cross national borders, and acquire a transnational
character, it is often accompanied by the flow of related lifestyles, tastes, ideas, and even
values across boundaries which help reshape local political institutions, cultural patterns and
social relations. It also creates new opportunities for many peoples to increase their wealth
and enhance their prosperities. On the other hand, the potential for people of different cultural
and religious backgrounds to know and understand one another owing to this process is
greater than ever before. Where in, it has made communication much easier and cheaper than
before.
The abovementioned study was related or supported our claim that globalization
really had a good and bad side. It is due to globalization where it brings out the best
technologies that create more connectedness thus creating faster communication, and
the transfer of information, goods and services and even the sharing of culture to one
country to another is highly beneficial to one‟s country. However, it is also
undeniable that through globalization on the other hand creates trouble due also to the
increasing use of technology it made people too much dependent on it or technology
sometimes already has the ability control us. It may also lead to loss of culture and the
usage of language.
Globalization in developing country Gazieh M.(2001) stated that Although developing
countries contribute in a way or another to this process, yet they do not yield the benefits of
this contribution. Indeed, they remain far away from what we might call „the impact point‟ to
influence its truck or contribute to its direction. In contrast, the process destroys many aspects
of life in these societies. The irresponsible behaviour of some multinational corporations
toward the environment of those countries, or more dangerously marketing expired products
and other illegal goods are examples of this destruction. So globalization in this context
changes the world to become a “global pillage instead of being a global village” (Giddens,
2000: 50).
Globalization also requires good governance in order to function well without this
instead of the world become global village it will instead become a global pillage
which shows that globalization will always be at both sides as we claim.

Globalization has forced many countries in various parts of this world to regulate to a lower
league the most fundamental needs of their peoples (Muzaffar, 1998: 183). The equitable
distribution of food, adequate health care facilities, and the quality of education are no longer
priority concerns the political agendas of the governments in these countries. All these
indicate that poor societies in the third world not only remain far away from benefiting from
globalization, but also they continue to suffer from its calamities, pitfalls and misfortunes. It
then contributes to laying the foundation of injustices and social inequalities, and moreover
preventing the growth of new markets in these countries because they are unable to compete
with the advanced markets. Here, competitiveness seems to be unequal and its result under all
circumstances remains in favour of the strong and those who control international markets.
So instead of filling up the gap between the rich and the poor, globalization in its present
formula widens this gap (Aulakh, 2000: 123). However, on the article shared by Hitesh
Bhasin in the positive and negative of globalization she said that Human rights have been
improved as a result of globalization since media coverage on violations of the rights receives
attention from all over the world. It is through globalization that leaders address inequalities
since information and openness get promoted. In most cases, the result is enhanced
prosperity and democracy.
According to Samini et. al.(2015) at the study globalization and economic growth
founds out that this positive effect is increased in the countries with better-educated workers
and well-developed financial systems. The findings also shows that the effect of economic
globalization also depends on a country‟s level of income. High and middle income
countries benefit from globalization whereas low income countries do not gain from it.
Mike Collins, 2015 on the Pros and Cons of Globalization, concerned with its social
aspect from which people from all over the world can now share ideas within some minutes
through the internet, which has enhanced communication and connectivity. Socially we also
have become more open and tolerant towards each other and people who live in the other part
of the world. Most people see speedy travel, mass communications and quick dissemination
of information through the Internet as benefits of globalization. However, with the increasing
use of modern technologies, may lead to laziness, too much dependency in technologies and
also leads to the incursion of communicable diseases.
According to Kukreja(2019) on the article Globalization meaning and its importance,
states that through globalization countries and companies have access to a bigger consumer
base. Globalization can lead to better economies. Through globalization economies of
different countries are becoming more connected to one another since they depend on each
other for trade. It also provides cheaper goods for consumers, Gives access to a larger market.
On the other hand, she also argued that the globalization in economic aspect may bring
damage in the environment, can cause fluctuation of prices, and job insecurity.
The positive view of globalization in cultural aspect is that there is no single
civilization that had all good practices. Instead the coming together of various cultures has
made the world today a better place. The welcoming of people from various backgrounds and

civilizations has resulted in the creation of new cultures, thus leading societal group.
However on the other side of the story, Globalization in culture may not be as successful as it
is because it may mean the sharing of cultures may lose the main culture, tradition of one‟s
group.
Globalization has made communication mush easier and cheaper than before. The
number of subscribers and users of the internet are now increasing remarkably(Mohammad
Abo Gazieh,(2001) However According to Yaapar,(2001:3)Another downside of
globalization is that most users of internet in cyberspaces are adults and they waste a lot of
time using the internet . Studies shows that the number of adults and young people who use
websites containing immoral materials are increasing in particular among schools and
universities.

Chapter III
CONCLUSION

Globalization is efficient but also so far incredibly unjust.

Globalization is very essential alongside with each beneficial there will always be
consequences and will always be two point of views and each side should never be taken for
granted or to be disregarded especially when it concerns the good for the global community.
We should still bear in mind that whatever advantages of globalization is, it is always
accompanied with unintended effects and consequences. Another is that it paves the way for
injustices and inequalities also in distribution of wealth. Globalization is reality. To sum up
globalization can improve and change the way of life of global community either in terms of
technologies, Transportations, Dressing, hairstyles, communications, education, cultural and
even political aspects. On the other hand it also creates environmental damage, prices to
fluctuate, loss of culture and language.

However, and regardless of our perception on globalization as opponents or

proponents of it, we must remember to look and define globalization in multidimensional
perspective because it is not only focuses in economics but it it‟s also in political, social and
cultural view. It is helpful to rethink the process of globalization on how to enhance more its
positive aspects and how to avoid or mitigate it eradiate its negative aspect.
