Goodenough Harris Drawing test introduction

The Draw-A-Man test was developed by Goodenough in 1926. It was the first formal figure
drawing test. It is used to estimate a child’s cognitive and intellectual abilities reflected in the
drawing’s quality. This type of projective test involves exactly you might imagine: you draw a
person and the image you created is then assessed by the examiner. It is also use to access intlectual
maturity of children from age range of 5 years to 15 years. The test has also been used to identify
the presence of unilateral spatial neglect (USN) in adult patients post-stroke.

Objective of the test

The main purpose of this test is to assist professionals in inferring child’s cognitive developmental
levels with little or no influence of other factors such as language barriers or special needs. It is
measure of intellectual maturation in children, to elicit personality type and unconscious material,
and as part of neuropsychologic test batteries. The test has also been used to identify the presence
of unilateral spatial neglect (USN) in adult patients post-stroke.

Administrating of test

The person were seated in relaxed and well lighted room. He was given led pencil. Then
he was asked to write the information in front of page. Then i told him to draw a picture of man.
After that a women and then his self. I told him draw the way he like draw. Wharever comes in his
mind related to pictures he can draw on them.

Interpretation

Table 2.1

The client raw scores and standard scores on the point scale are given below

Raw scores Standard scores Percentile score

Point scale

Man 33 83 13
Women 34 84 14

Average __ 83 13

Self 34 85 16

Table 2.2

The client raw and standard scores on quality scale are given below.

Raw score Standard score Percentile score

Quality scale
Men 4 79 8
Women 4 78 7

According to the manual of Goodenough haris test the average standard score is 100 and
the person having standard score below 100 means that he is below than average and if it is above
than 100 that is mean he has good intellectual. So here client’s standard scores are lower than the
average score which means he is below than average and don’t have good mental capabilities and
intellectually he is not much mature than his age.
