Although astronomers have studied star formation for decades, (34) ______ questions remain. Part
of the problem is that most stars are formed in clouds of molecules and dust. The dust absorbs the
2
ultraviolet and most of the optical light emitted by forming stars, making it difficult for Hubble’s
ultraviolet and optical (35) ______ to study the process.
The longer, or redder, the wavelength of the light, the less is absorbed. That is why sunsets, where
the light must pass through long lengths of dusty air, appear red.
The near infrared, (36) ______, has an even easier time passing through dust than the red optical
light. NICMOS can look into star formation regions with the superior image quality of Hubble to
determine the details of where the star (37) ______ occurs. A good example is the iconic Hubble image of
the Eagle Nebula, also known as the pillars of creation.
The optical image shows majestic pillars (38) ______ appear to show star formation over a large
volume of space. The NICMOS image, however, shows a different picture. In the NICMOS image, most
of the pillars are transparent with no star formation. Stars are only being formed at the tip of the pillars.
The optical pillars are just empty dust reflecting the light of a group of nearby stars.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
The main job of the kidneys is to remove waste from the blood and return the cleaned blood back to
the body. Each minute about one litre of blood – one-fifth of all the blood pumped by the heart – enters
the kidneys through the renal arteries. After the blood is cleaned, it flows back into the body through the
renal veins.
Each kidney contains about one million tiny units called nephrons. Each nephron is made up of a
very small filter, called a glomerulus, which is attached to a tubule. As blood passes through the nephron,
fluid and waste products are filtered out. Much of the fluid is then returned to the blood, while the waste
products are concentrated in any extra fluid as urine (wee).
The urine flows through a tube called the ureter into the bladder. Urine passes from the bladder out of
the body through a tube called the urethra. The kidney usually makes one to two litres of urine every day
depending on your build, how much you drink, the temperature and the amount of exercise you do.
A healthy kidney can greatly increase its work capacity. With two healthy kidneys, each kidney
performs 50 per cent of the normal kidney function. If one kidney is lost, the other kidney can enlarge and
provide up to 75 per cent of the normal kidney function (the work of one and a half normally functioning
kidneys).
Question 39: What is the passage mainly about?
A. Tiny units called nephrons B. Kidneys are a filter system
C. The urine in the bladder D. What is normal kidney function?

urine the kidney makes?
A. place of exercise B. size of the body C. time of drinking D. water temperature

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
To reach you, these words were encoded into signals of light moving about 125,000 miles per second
through fiber-optic cables. These lines, splayed out across mountains and oceans, are made of hair-thin
glass 30 times more transparent than the purest water. The technology was made possible in part by a
3
team from Corning Incorporated. In 1970, they patented a type of cable that could transmit large amounts
of information long distances, building on decades of work by other researchers.
Assuming you’re reading this on a smartphone, you also owe a debt to Steve Jobs, who in 2006 asked
Corning to make a very thin, strong screen for his new product, the iPhone. The result, Gorilla Glass, now
dominates the market for mobile devices: Phones made with the fifth generation of this product can be
dropped onto a rough surface from a height of five feet (selfie height) and survive 80 percent of the time.
That’s just the start. Without glass, the world would be unrecognizable. It’s in the eyeglasses on your
face, the lightbulbs in your room, and the windows that let you see outside. But despite its ubiquity,
there’s still some debate within the research community about how to define “glass.” Some tend to
emphasize its solid qualities, others its liquidity. Unanswered questions abound, like what makes one type
of glass stronger than another, or why certain mixtures produce their unique optical or structural
properties. Add to this the nearly infinite varieties of glass - one database lists over 350,000 types of
currently known glass, though in principle the number of mixtures is limitless - and you get a surprisingly
large and active field of research that regularly produces astounding new products. Glass has shaped the
world more than any other substance, and in many sneaky ways, it’s the defining material of the human
era.
Question 44: Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Transmitting large amounts of information B. Humankind’s most important material
C. It’s just the start D. The limitless mixtures
Question 45: According to paragraph 1, fiber-optic cables ______.
A. cannot be found on mountains and in oceans
B. are 30 times thinner than hair
C. were made by a team from Corning Incorporated
D. couldn’t transmit information long distances
Question 46: The word they in paragraph 1 refers to ______.
A. team B. mountains C. oceans D. 30 times
Question 47: The word devices in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. individuals B. influences C. commissions D. apparatuses
Question 48: The word mixtures in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. networks B. discounts C. compound D. principles
Question 49: Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Fiber-optic cables are more transparent than the purest water.
B. Gorilla Glass can survive after being dropped from a height of five feet.
C. The research community totally agrees on how to define “glass.”
D. Astounding new products of glass are still being produced.
Question 50: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Glass is fantastic and most important material ever made.
B. There was no smartphone without fiber-optic cables.
C. It’s Steve Jobs who made Gorilla Glass.
D. The number of mixtures of glass are limited.
