Part One: Reading Passage

Direction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions 1-10 according to
the information given in the passage.
Do you watch television? Television has a bad influence on children. Some recent
studies have shown many frightening facts about television. If parents care about their
children, they will eliminate television viewing in their homes. Three and four year-old
children watch television between three and four hours a day. This means that young
children are sitting in front of the ‘picture box’ between 21 and 28 hours a week. Any child
who is sitting in front of the television is neither reading and nor outside playing and
running. The child isn’t getting the exercise needed. He /she will not be very healthy or
very smart.

Not only is television harmful to children’s health, but it can also be harmful to
children’s natural, happy and generous personality. A recent study showed that children
who watch violent action films on television are much aggressive than other children. They
don’t have friendly attitudes and ways of relating to others.

Television also seems to change or affect a child’s value systems. Children, who
watch a great deal of television with all the commercials, see to find it difficult to
determine what is important in life and what isn’t. They seem to think if they don’t own
advertised toys, they will be unhappy. They feel that all ‘Junk food’ they see advertised is
the type of food they should eat.

Scientist have found through watching children, how much television affects, how
they act and how they think. Based on the facts they have found, television watching is a
dangerous medium for young children.
