TUTORIAL 1
(PHYSICAL QUANTITIES AND MEASUREMENTS)

1. The pressure of a liquid is given by P = ρgh. Calculate the pressure (in SI unit)
if the density of water, ρ is 1 g cm–3, the acceleration due to gravity, g is 10
m s– 2, and the height of water, h is 50 cm ?
[5 × 103 Pa]

2. (a) Show that the expression v  at is dimensionally correct if in

this expression v represents velocity, a acceleration and t an instant of
time.

(b) The equation governing the rate of flow of fluid under streamline
t
conditions through on horizontal pipe of length l and radius r is
V pr 4
 , where p is the pressure difference across the pipe and  is
t 8l

the viscosity of the fluid. Deduce the dimension for  .

3. A girl pushes a box across the floor and causes it to undergo two displacements A
and B. Displacement A is 2.0m along positive x-axis, while displacement B is 2.4m
along the positive y-axis. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant
displacement.
