important for individuals of all ages. As technology advances and information becomes more readily
available, it is essential for teachers to adapt their methods to effectively teach critical thinking skills in
the digital age.
However, the task of teaching critical thinking can prove challenging. Research from Daniel Willingham,
a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, suggests that students may struggle to apply
these skills across different subjects and contexts. Nonetheless, with the right strategies and resources,
educators can successfully incorporate critical thinking into their digital learning experiences,
empowering their students to navigate the complex world of information.
Seeing how important technology is and the kids these days are drawn towards digital games more than
they want to be outside, such games can be used to enhance visual literacy and critical thinking all the
while having fun. Playing video games has also shown to develop problem solving, spatial and hand-eye
coordination skills, as well as vision and speed skills. Adolescents that played role-playing and strategic-
based games show increased problem solving skills.
Games give you critical thinking because, in games, you've got to make decisions," Donovan Martinez
said. "You've got to make critical decisions. I mean, it's not life and death...but its decisions on if you
want to win, if you want to lose and the decisions you make.”
Mind map
A mind map (a.k.a., concept map, cognitive map) is a tool that organizes words, thoughts, ideas, tasks,
activities, and more in the form of a diagram. Start with a key or main idea in the center with subtopics
[arranged] radically around the main idea.
Mind Maps not only highlight important facts, but also show the overall structure of a subject and the
relative importance of individual parts of it. They are great when you need to think creatively, and can
help you to make new connections between ideas. This is useful when you have problems to solve. They
are also a great exercise to promote visual literacy. It is a skill that would benefit students in an
alternative learning setting.
Additionally, they work well for the learners with ADHD. The reason mind maps work so well for those
with adult ADHD is that the majority tend to be visual thinkers. Having a mind map complete with
images, colour-codes and shapes makes it easy to clarify your thoughts and seek out the information
you need. Mind maps let you plan out your thoughts and ideas.

Please click on this Ted Talk by Hazel Wagner. The talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED
conference format but independently organized by a local community. She has four college degrees
including a Ph.D. in mathematics from Northwestern University, which she earned while raising three
children. She’s published four books on mathematics and business, including Power Brainstorming and
Business, Brains, and B.S. Hazel specializes in a concept called mind mapping, teaching others how to
use it to augment and enhance their memory, studies, planning, and more.
The learners should be given the freedom and resources to explore the internet to put their ideas into
reality. Find below an example of mind mapping that enhances critical thinking among the students. This
1. Choose the topic of the mind map and place it in the middle of the drawing
2. Come up with three to five main ideas, then evenly space them in a circular formation around the
mind map topic
3. Draw a line from the mind map topic to each main idea
4. Brainstorm supporting details such as ideas, tasks, and questions for each main idea
