Problem Sheet 7

1. Fourier Transform Synthesis

Using the Fourier Transform Synthesis equation (given below), determine the inverse Fourier
transform of the below signals-
1 ∞
𝑥(𝑡) = ∫ 𝑋(𝑗𝑤)𝑒 𝑗𝑤𝑡 𝑑𝑤
2𝜋 −∞

a) 𝑋1 (𝑗𝑤) = 2𝜋𝛿(𝑤) + 𝜋𝛿(𝑤 − 4𝜋) + 𝜋𝛿(𝑤 + 4𝜋)

2, 0 ≤ 𝑤 ≤ 2
b) 𝑋2 (𝑗𝑤) = {−2, −2 ≤ 𝑤 < 0
0 , |𝑤| > 2
2. Fourier Transform using properties of Fourier Transform
a) Using Fourier Transform tables determine the Fourier transform of following signals
sin 𝑡 2
𝑥(𝑡) = 𝑡 ( )
𝜋𝑡
b) Use Parseval's relation and the result of the previous part to determine the numerical value of

2
sin 𝑡 4
𝐴= ∫ 𝑡 ( ) 𝑑𝑡
−∞ 𝜋𝑡
3. Time scaling in convolution using Fourier Transform
Given the relationship
𝑦(𝑡) = 𝑥(𝑡) ∗ ℎ(𝑡)
and
𝑔(𝑡) = 𝑥(3𝑡) ∗ ℎ(3𝑡)
and given that x(t) has Fourier transform X(jw) and h(t) has Fourier transform H(jw), use Fourier
transform properties to show that g(t) has the form
𝑔(𝑡) = 𝐴𝑦(𝐵𝑡)
Determine the values of A and B.

4. Determination of x(t) from its Fourier Transform properties

Consider a signal x(t) with Fourier transform X(jw ). Suppose we are given the following facts:
a) x(t) is real and non negative
b) ℱ −1 {(1 + 𝑗𝑤)𝑋(𝑗𝑤)} = 𝐴𝑒 −2𝑡 𝑢(𝑡), where A is independent of t.

c) ∫−∞ |𝑋(𝑗𝑤)|2 𝑑𝑤 = 2𝜋
Determine a closed-form expression for x(t).
5. Fourier Transform Properties and corresponding time domain signals
a) Determine which, if any, of the real signals depicted in Figure below have Fourier transforms that
satisfy each of the following conditions:
1. Re{X(jw)} = 0
2. Im{X(jw)} = 0
3. There exists a real a such that 𝑒 𝑗𝛼𝑤 𝑋(𝑗𝑤) is real

4. ∫−∞ 𝑋(𝑗𝑤)𝑑𝑤 = 0

5. ∫−∞ 𝑤𝑋(𝑗𝑤)𝑑𝑤 = 0
6. X(jw) is periodic

b) Construct a signal that has properties (1), (4), and (5) and does not have the others.
6. Multiplication property in Fourier Transform
Suppose g(t) = x(t) cos(t) and the Fourier transform of the g(t) is
1, |w| ≤ 2
G(jw) = {
0, otherwise
a) Determine x(t).
b) Specify the signal 𝑥1(t) such that
2
g(t) = 𝑥1 (𝑡)cos ( 𝑡)
