3. Dissimilar Rational Expressions
-different denominators
Simplifying rational algebraic expressions
• Factor completely the numerator and the
denominator separately.
• Look for factors that are common to the
numerator and denominator. And always
remember that we can only cancel factors, not
terms!
• Cancel all the common factor(s).

Sets
• A set is defined as a collection of distinct, well-
defined objects forming a group. Each member of
the set is an element.
• The easiest way to solve problems on sets is
by drawing Venn diagrams
Sets
• Georg Cantor – father of set theory;
German mathematician who founded
set theory and introduced the
mathematically meaningful concept
of transfinite numbers, indefinitely
large but distinct from one another.
Sets
• Venn diagrams are named after
John Venn, English
mathematician, logician and
philosopher noted for introducing
Venn diagrams, which are used in
logic, set theory, probability,
statistics, and computer science.

Slope
• The slope of a line is a measure of its steepness.
• Slope is calculated as "rise over run" (change in y
divided by change in x)
• y = mx + b, m is the slope
Slope
• Steps to find the equation of a line from two points:
1. Find the slope using the slope formula
2. Use the slope and one of the points to solve for the y-intercept (b).
One of your points can replace the x and y, and the slope you just
calculated replaces the m of your equation y = mx + b. Then b is the
only variable left. Use the tools you know for solving for a variable to
solve for b.
3. Once you know the value for m and the value for b, you can plug these
into the slope-intercept form of a line (y = mx + b) to get the equation for
the line.
6. What is the slope of the following
equation: 2𝑥 − 𝑦 − 7 = 0
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
9. What is the slope given the points (3, -5)
and (-2, 4)?
A. 5/9
B. – 5/9
C. – 9/5
D. 9/-5
17. Find the general equation of the line
which passes through the points (2, -1) and
(-3, 5).
A. 6x + 6y – 5 = 0
B. 6x + 5y − 7 = 0
C. 5x – 6y – 7 = 0
D. 6x + 7y − 5 = 0
Solving equations
• Equation is a mathematical statement that shows
that two mathematical expressions are equal.
• Addition property of equality – if a value is added to
two equal quantities, then the sums are also equal
• Multiplication property of equality - if a value is
multiplied to two equal quantities, then the
products are also equal

today, the age = x + n. Similarly, n years in the past,
the age of this would have been x – n years.
