Narrative Accomplishment Report

I. Title of PPA : Project SMILE (School Mental Health Intervention for

Learners and Educators)

II. Period Covered : August 2022 – March 2023

III. Target Beneficiaries : Learners , Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff

IV. Introduction

Mental health is as important as physical health. But unlike physical health,

which is clearly visible when you are in pain, mental health problems are not easily
noticeable, yet can greatly affect the person’s well-being.
Learners, as well as teaching and non-teaching personnels are not spared of
having mental and psychosocial problems. This is due to many stressors that
everyone may encounter in their dealing with the school tasks and socializing with
classmates and co-workers.
Mental Health has a significant impact on the quality of life of the affected
and their families. When not carefully managed, it will lead to major problems of
the community.
In school, an intervention will lessen the severity of any issue. Since we have
just started to bounce off a pandemic where regular education setup was at stake,
we cannot deny that mental health was also compromised.

V. Brief Description and Objectives

Project SMILE is an intervention program conducted by Taytay-Malaya

Elementary School to address the needs for psychological support and management
among learners and school personnel. This program helps the school in dealing
with issues on mental health that may affect the quality of life of individuals and
their interpersonal relationship with others.
The objectives of this project are as follows: help build a strong support
system for sound mental and psychosocial health of learners and school staff
through the conduct of different School Mental Health Programs ; promote better
interpersonal relationship between and among co-workers and maintain a balance
psychosocial skill.

V. Highlights of Accomplishments

Our overall health is important. Being aware of the changes in our health
status signal the need for immediate intervention.
Mental health is one of the health issues surfaced during the course of
pandemic. Learners, teachers, and other school personnel were also not spared of

experiencing problems in their psychosocial well-being.

Taytay-Malaya Elementary School implemented Project SMILE in the

purpose of creating support system for learners and school personnel who suffered
from psychological issue and provide immediate intervention for persons who show
symptoms of psychosocial problem.
Project SMILE was launched in August as part of Brigada Eskwela. The
planned activities were presented in the presence of our school head and all school
personnel. Novie C. Astrera, our School Health Coordinator facilitated the
implementation of the project for the school year 2022-2023
A Psychosocial Support Evaluation was administered to all learners to
determine possible beneficiaries of the program. Advisers, Health and SDRRM
Coordinators led the activity the following week.
The Mental Health Awareness Seminar was conducted on August 26, 2023,
through a SLAC (School Learning Action Cell). The said training was facilitated by
Mr. Luigi P. Lawas, a registered psychometrician who tackled Stress Management
in the Workplace and attended by all school personnel.
In September, the school conducted SBM or Suri, Babad at Malay, an
activity that will promote positive personal and professional relationships among
co-workers. In this activity, personnel were given the chance to reflect on their way
of dealing with co-workers. It also paved way to an open forum where issues and
misunderstanding were discussed in a positive way.
Learners were also given psychological first aid through online video clips
viewing. These helped them cope with distress brought about by changes in the
setup of the educational system. Unfortunately, we did not meet the expected 50%
attendance among parents due to their unavailability during the scheduled time.
Meanwhile, a new activity was established entitled Project B A STAR or Bring
And Share Things and Resources. This aims to teach the learners of charity
through in-kind donations to less fortunate learners. In this activity, learners
develop positive traits like generosity and being helpful.
A 30-minute a week talk to a new friend activity was conducted to promote
an inclusive school environment free from discrimination. This helped the learners
to earn new friends and maintain balanced interpersonal relationships among
learners.
Despite the success of the project, we also encountered challenges and
issues that affect the quality of the program. Among these are uncooperative
parents, overlapping activities in school that make it hard to find perfect time for
activities to be conducted, and insufficient IEC materials used in training and
workshops.

VI. Ways Forward and Recommendations

In the next school year, we plan to continue the program on mental health.
Improvements on the activities will be considered to augment the effectiveness of
the
program. It is recommended that teachers undergo proper training to increase the

knowledge of learner’s mental health needs. We should also ask for the help of
professionals in providing consultation to teachers who are working with specific
learners. Moreover, parental involvement is one important factor we can consider in
dealing with health issues among learners. And lastly, we should build a school-
community partnership and tap community organizations that would help us in
the implementation of the project.
